Chapter 185: Into The Unknown Land
Chapter 185: Into The Unknown Land
Brenda’s POV
When I departed in the morning, the woodland was quiet. The crunch of my boots on the dirt walk was the only sound. Mist coiled between the trees like spectral fingers, and the air was frigid.
My heart told me I couldn't wait, even though I had promised the pack we would go together. Every second was crucial if Damian was still alive. So I went by myself.
“Lead me to him,” I said, clutching his pendant around my neck.
Inside me, my wolf awoke, restless but vigilant. She wanted to howl and run, but I had her keep her cool.
The trail wound into untamed forests I had never encountered. The branches of ancient trees clawed at the sky as they loomed overhead. There were odd smells, smoke, blood, and something darker.
A snarl behind me caused me to stop. My entire body tensed. I turned slowly.
A set of bright eyes looked out of the darkness. Not my wolf, but a wolf. Its teeth were exposed, and its fur was as dark as midnight.
I held up my hand. "I'd rather not fight. Permit me to go.
With a deep growl, the beast surrounded me. Despite my racing heart, I stood my ground.
Even though my knees were shaking, I said, "You won't scare me." "I've dealt with worse."
The wolf lunged suddenly. I drew a dagger from my belt and rolled aside. I shook my head, despite my inner wolf growling and ready to fight. "No, not just yet."
The wolf snarled at me once more before freezing and twitching its snout. The jewellery at my throat caught its attention. It retreated momentarily, almost in terror. Then it growled one more time and disappeared into the darkness.
I held on to the pendant, breathing heavily. Damian, what do you mean? Why does your mark frighten them?
I continued farther into the unknown. Hours went by as the sun rose and then fell once more. Even though my legs hurt, I continued to walk.
Upon arriving at a clearing, I noticed the odd remnants of an ancient temple. Moss-covered, fractured stones that are still erect.
The walls were etched with symbols. I traced them with my fingers, and my eyes grew wide. They were identical to those found in the book of prophecies.
"This is no coincidence," I said. "This location is a component of the truth."
However, I sensed it as I leaned in—eyes observing me. My breath caught.
"Who is present?" I yelled.
Quiet.
I took a step back and gripped my dagger more tightly. However, the sensation intensified, becoming heavier and pressing against my chest.
Through the wind came the words, "Turn back, Luna... or lose everything."
My heart was beating as I whirled around, but nobody was there.
I swallowed hard and said, "I'm not going back." Not until I locate him.
However, the ground beneath me shook, and fissures appeared all over the temple's stone floor.
I staggered and went to my knees.
"Damian." I clutched the pendant as I gasped. "No matter what tries to stop me, I'm coming."
The ruins trembled as though something beneath was attempting to escape, and the fissures became wider.
I realised then that this location was not deserted.
Here, something was waiting for me.
I was gasping for air, and my chest hurt. The world whirled around me as my eyes sprang open.
The stone ceiling above was dark and wet. Somewhere nearby, water dripped. I felt a sharp pain in my ribs as I attempted to sit up.
"Where am I, exactly?" I said.
I looked down. Even though my skin was damaged and my clothes were ripped, I was still alive. I was still breathing, somehow, despite everything.
Before the darkness drew me in, my final memories were of Brenda's face, fire, and mayhem.
"Brenda..." My voice broke. "I need to return to her."
I stumbled to my feet, pushing myself up. It was a little chamber with a thick iron door and no windows. I stumbled over to it and touched the chilly surface.
Locked.
I ignored the discomfort and banged my fist on it. "Give me a break!"
From the darkness behind me emerged a voice. "You must exercise caution. They will listen to you.
My heart was beating as I whirled around.
Someone emerged from the corner. A grey-clad man with a cowl covering his face. In the darkness, his eyes shone dimly.
"Who are you?" I insisted.
Someone who isn't interested in your death. Not quite yet.
I squinted. "Where am I?"
The person cocked his head. "In the centre of the enemy's fortress." They have you as a prisoner. However, it might also be their weapon.
My chest constricted. "Weapon? What are you saying?
The man took a step forward and said softly. Damian, you are bound by the prophecy. Your destiny, your blood, and your tie. They intend to destroy the world by using you.
I felt a flash of anger. "I will never be used by them. I'll be dead before I let them to.
The man gave a quiet laugh. "Brave words. However, they do not intend for you to die.
My hands were tight, my anger searing. "So, what are their plans?"
The iron door moaned and started to open before the man could respond. The cubicle was filled with light.
The hooded figure retreated into the darkness. "We'll get together once again. Be prepared.
Then he was gone.
I was grabbed by the arms as guards barged in. I tried, but my body was not strong enough.
"Where are we going?" I yelled.
Among them, one scoffed. "To get to know the master."
My blood froze.
With torches flickering on the walls, they pulled me along a lengthy hallway. I was barely supported by my legs, but Brenda was the only thing on my mind.
"Remain calm," I said to myself. "I'll figure out how to get back to you."
The guards paused in front of a huge door with ominous markings etched on it. The air felt oppressively heavy.
The door opened with a squeak.
And there was a set of bright red eyes waiting for me inside.
