The mistake they made
THIRD PERSON POV
Dean storms into a posh living room, Door banging behind him as he makes his way across the impressively furnished room with a stunning, branched lighting fixture hanging from a high set ceiling.
A lean man sits on one of the couches, his legs crossed in front of him and a laptop on his lap. He looks up when Dean slams the door.
The man's eyes are like Dean's, deep blue pupils and a bright golden ring around them. Judging from his young features, he could be the same age as Dean.
Both are inhumanly tall and smooth skinned. As if they have never incurred a single scar throughout their life.
Dean marches towards the man, he is angry and intimidating. But the other guy doesn't seem bothered by that as he looks up and smirks.
"Where is Dad?" Dean asks the other guy in an impatient tone.
"I always knew you would get expelled sooner or later!" The guy says with a laugh. "Let me guess, you got into a fight with that rebel agent you were talking about me 0 i, it got messy and you both were shown the door"
Dean snorts before answering. "No."
"No? Then some boy pissed you off and you punched them dead." The guy takes another guess.
Dean scoffs. "No. I didn't get expelled." He says.
"You only got suspended?" The guy asks again.
"No. Sorry to disappoint you! I don't mess things up, Thodor!" Dean snaps, pacing.
"Well, neither do I." Thodor says setting his laptop aside."What has enraged you in such a beautiful day?" He asks.
Dean doesn't answer, seeming overwhelmingly infuriated.
"It's okay if you want to keep your troubles, I'm not exactly eager to carry your burdens anyway." Thodor scoffs.
Dean glares down at him. "It's your mistakes I'm trying to fix, idiot!"
"Dear partner, my work is always flawless. But you already know that." Thodor assures.
Dean squats and leans dangerously close to Thodor. The other man simply smiles.
"Let's hope for your sake that what I just found out isn't true, because if it is, we'll chop off your head and send it to Ferlis capital! Only you is going to be responsible for this!" Dean utters.
"Blah! Blah! Blah! What did you found out? That I stole your fancy shoes?"
"You did what?" Dean roars.
"Nothing. You wanted to speak with your Dad?" Thodor asks ignoring Dean's glare and rising to his feet.
"Find him and meet me in his office!" Dean orders. "We need to decide what to do to clean your mess!" He adds walking out of the room.
"You once again forgot to say 'please'. I'm your partner, not your secretary! If you want favours, you must say please." Thodor says in an amused voice. One can tell he's just teasing.
Dean halts and turns. "This isn't a joke, Thodor!" He roars. Thodor makes a show of zipping his mouth.
"I'll go get him." He says and jogs out of the room.
Dean exits the room through a different door. He walks along a corridor, then climbs a curving staircase before walking into a spacious office. The furnishing here is simple.
A mahogany table sets at the centre of the room with three chairs around it. Dean takes a seat on one of the chairs, he buries his face between his palms and sighs in frustration.
Door opens, Thodor walks in with Billionaire McDonald in tow. Mr.McDonald is tall with greyish hair at the edges. His eyes resembles those of his son.
"Whatever you found out must be very important to make you sneak out of school so early in the day." He comments taking a seat opposite Dean.
Thodor settles on the remaining seat.
"I already told him he is overeating, but you know he's stubborn as well." Thodor teases Dean. Dean shoots him a glare and once again, Thodor makes a show of zipping his mouth.
"So, what is this thing you found out?" Mr. McDonald asks
"Where is Mike?" Dean quips.
"In his room. He's playing the piano." Mr. McDonald answers. "Does he have anything to do with whatever you found out?"
Dean appear nervous, he taps his long fingers on the table. "I've terrible news. Thodor here made a grave mistake. And now...everything we have been doing here is nothing but crap! Dean bursts.
Mr.McDonald smiles as if amused.
"What makes you say that? What is this mistake that you think Thodor made?" He asks.
"You remember he was the one tasked with locating Joher's child, right?" Dean starts.
"Yes I was. And I completed that task within less than the recommended hours." Thodor answers.
"Thanks to your messy work, we got the wrong person! Mike is not Joher's son!" Dean revels.
The other two men gape at him, dumbfounded by the news. Mr. McDonald looks like he's going to have a heart attack. But he quickly recovers and composes himself. So does Thodor.
"That can't be! I tracked the watch just like I was told." Thodor argues.
"Then maybe we shouldn't have only tracked the watch. As far as I'm concerned, it was given to the wrong person." Dean informs.
"What do you mean? Why would Joher give the watch to a child that wasn't his? He knew what was at stake!" Mr.MacDonald hollers.
"Where did you get this false news anyway?" Thodor asks.
"From very credible sources. But don't worry too much, we haven't lost everything." Dean answers.
"What do we have left if we no longer has the one thing that brought us here? We're so fucked!" Mr. McDonald smacks his fist on the desk.
"Calm down, Dad! You haven't heard the whole story." Dean urges.
"Yeah, relax. This could be fake news anyway." Thodor soothes. Both men ignore him.
"You better tell us you know who the real child is because I'm going to go mad if we are back to zero." Mr. McDonald says.
"I know more than who she is, I know where she is!" Dean supplies. Again, both men stare at him, flabbergasted.
"Did you say, 'She'? Thodor asks with a grin.
Dean ignores him and carries on."From what I gathered, Joher paid a random woman to have his child. He trusted her to hand over the watch to the child once they were born. As it turned out, the woman had a husband whom she had broken up with at the time but they later got back together. She kept the watch even after Joher's child was born.
She and her husband got another kid after that, Mike."
"And she gave him the watch?!" Thodor exclaims.
"Yeah. And there came the confusion." Dean answers.
"I don't think it was my fault then, Joher should have known better than to trust a random prostitute!" Thodor defends himself.
"Where did you get all this information?" Mr. MacDonald asks Dean.
"Remember the girl I told you about the other day?"
"The rebel agent you had a problem killing? She's the source of your information?" Mr.MacDonald asks, sounding skeptical.
"No. She is Joher's real child." Dean once again surprises them.
"What!" Both men exclaim at the same time.
"She's the sister Mike is always talking about!" McDonald says in an astonished voice.
"You already killed her?" Thodor asks, the golden ring around his pupils seems to glow.
"I almost did. I saw her with the watch in the morning. I set a trap and ambushed her alone in an isolated place. I was forced to let her go when she claimed that the watch was her father's and she would rather die than give it up." Dean revels.
"So she knows she's Joher's daughter?" Mr.MacDonald asks.
"Not exactly. She doesn't know his name, she doesn't know she isn't human, she knows nothing!" Dean answers.
"But she's at least alive, right?" Mr.McDonald demands.
"Yeah. But you should know that her family treats her like trash." Dean answers.
"How old is she? Is it possible that she's already old enough to perceive her gift?" McDonald asks.
"I think she's about the right age." Dean answers.
"Can't you ask her? Where is the man in you?" Thodor challenges.
"I just tried to kill her, twice! Surely you understand she doesn't want to see my face." Dean defends.
"You left her out there? Unprotected? I thought I trained you better than that!" Mr. McDonald scolds.
"What did you want me to do? kidnap her?"
Mr.McDonald rises from his seat, he grabs a bottle of water and gulps down half of the contents. "How the fuck am I supposed to report this findings to the council? We're going to get fired!"
"Actually, we're supposed to be honored. The Council is the one that ordered that the child be tracked using the watch, we did what they said. They're the creaters of the mess, not us." Thodor points out.
"But we did try to kill the girl." McDonald counters.
"They don't know that. Unless you are happy to inform them." Thodor argues.
"But wouldn't you rather wait until we have the girl here before contacting them? At least then you'll have a piece of good news to tell. Besides, we'll need to put her in a genetic identity machine to ascertain we have the right person this time.
"You know it's also illegal to withhold such crucial information from the Defense Council, right?" Mr. McDonald says, lowering himself back down to his seat.
"Only if they know." Dean sides with Thodor.
Mr. McDonald nervously rubs his elbows. "Okay, let's say we keep the council in the dark, how do we lure the girl to voluntarily walk in here and have the test when she's not just afraid of Dean, but also convinced she's human?"
"We got leverage." Dean says with a smirk.
"What leverage?" Mr.McDonald asks, his eyes lighting up.
"Leverage means a thing that..." Thodor begins to explain but he's cut shot by Mr.McDonald.
"I know what leverage is. Now please shut up so Dean can expound on his plan."
"Sorry!" Thodor apologizes. "
"When I spoke with Alena's older sisters, they hinted that she and Mike were very close. I'm guessing we can use mike as a bargaining chip." Dean suggest.
"Genius thinking. Wicked, but genius anyway." Thodor comments.
