Chapter 306: A New Boss

Chapter 306: A New Boss

I woke to the sound of waves breaking against the shore. For a moment, I lay completely still, eyes closed, letting the gentle rhythm wash over me. The scent of salt air mingled with tropical flowers drifted through the open windows, teasing my senses. This was it. The day I never thought would come.

My wedding day.

A gentle knock broke my reverie.

"Mom! Are you awake?" Harper's excited voice carried through the door. "The makeup people are here! They have like a million brushes!"

I smiled, sliding out of bed. "Coming, sweetheart."

The bridal suite of our Maldivian villa had been transformed into a styling headquarters. Racks of cosmetics, hair tools, and emergency supplies lined every surface. The head stylist, Alessandra, a slender Italian woman with silver-streaked hair, smiled warmly as I entered.

"There she is! Our beautiful bride!" She kissed both my cheeks. "We make you stunning today, yes? More stunning than already."

Harper twirled in her flower girl dress, the soft layers of blush-pink tulle flaring around her small frame. "Mom, look! When I spin fast enough, it looks like a cotton candy cloud!" She demonstrated with another enthusiastic spin, nearly toppling a tray of makeup brushes.

"Careful, Princess Tornado," I cautioned, catching her mid-spin. "You'll have plenty of time to dazzle everyone later."

Theo appeared in the doorway, looking adorably uncomfortable in his miniature tuxedo. His brow furrowed as he struggled with his bow tie, small fingers fumbling with the silky fabric.

"This stupid tie won't stay straight," he muttered, voice tinged with frustration. "Dad makes it look easy."

I gestured for him to come closer, but before I could help, a deeper voice called from the hallway.

"Maybe I can—" James began, stepping into view.

Harper gasped dramatically, launching herself between us. "NO! Stop right there!" She planted her tiny body in the doorway, arms spread wide like a miniature bouncer. "Dad, you can't see Mom before the wedding! It's bad luck!"

James froze, eyebrows shooting up in amusement. "Is that so?"

"Yes! I read it in Camille’s wedding magazine." Harper's expression was deadly serious, her stance unwavering despite being dwarfed by her father. "The groom can't see the bride in her dress before the ceremony or the marriage will be doomed!"

"Well, I wouldn't want to doom our marriage before it starts," James conceded, fighting a smile. "What about my little princess? Can I at least see you?"

Harper narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "You've already seen my dress at the fitting. Now shoo!" She made exaggerated pushing motions, nearly tripping over her own skirt. "Wall Street CEOs have to follow wedding rules too!"

"But Dad," Theo piped up, "my tie..."

"Let Pop-pop help you," Harper insisted, still blocking the door. "Dad, go! Unless you want this wedding to become a total disaster movie?"

James dramatically raised his hands in surrender. "I bow to the authority of Harper Thornton, Wedding Enforcer."

A chuckle from behind announced my father's arrival. Liam looked years younger in his tailored suit, the weight of past troubles finally lifted from his shoulders.

"I'll handle the tie situation," he offered, winking at Theo. "Looks like there's a new boss in the Thornton family."

"As flower girl, I have ultimate power!" Harper declared, still guarding the doorway. "Even over CEOs!"

James blew me a kiss over Harper's head before backing away. "See you at the altar, future Mrs. Thornton."

With Theo's tie situation resolved, both children were herded out to continue their wedding preparations, leaving me once again surrounded by the beauty team. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror—cheeks flushed with excitement, eyes bright with anticipation.

After years of pain, separation, and struggle, we were finally here. Today, James and I would make official what our hearts had known all along: we belonged together.

Golden hour bathed the beach in warm amber light. The string quartet began playing as guests settled into their seats. I spotted Nathan with Charlotte, his hand resting protectively over hers, his face more relaxed than I'd seen in years. Nearby, Camille and Marcus sat close together, exchanging secretive glances that made it clear their relationship had evolved into something much more personal. Ashley had arrived with Daniel, their daughter already whispering excitedly with another small guest.

Ahead of us, Harper began her procession, clutching her basket with determined concentration. She started perfectly, delicately sprinkling petals along the white carpet. Then, halfway down the aisle, inspiration apparently struck. She suddenly decided to throw the petals upward instead, creating a shower of pink that the ocean breeze promptly picked up and flung directly onto the guests in the front row.

Ashley and Daniel found themselves suddenly covered in flower petals, their shocked expressions quickly giving way to laughter as Harper mouthed an exaggerated "Sorry!" before continuing her journey.

Theo followed behind, his measured steps and solemn expression so like James that my heart squeezed. When he spotted Harper's "flower disaster," his face registered a brief "I knew this would happen" look before he quickened his pace to catch up.

To my surprise, Harper stopped, turning to wait for her brother. She extended her hand, which Theo took without hesitation.

"I need backup," I heard her stage-whisper. "There are way more flowers than I thought!"

Together, they completed the journey down the aisle, Theo discreetly helping Harper distribute the remaining petals more evenly. The sight of them working as a team, supporting each other despite their different approaches, brought fresh tears to my eyes.

Then the music changed again, and everyone rose to their feet. My father squeezed my arm gently, and we began our walk.

I barely registered the guests, the decorations, or even the stunning ocean view. My eyes found James immediately, standing tall and handsome at the end of the aisle. The look on his face—a mixture of awe, love, and sheer joy—made everything else fade away.

This man had once been my greatest heartbreak. Now he was about to become my husband.

When we reached the altar, my father placed my hand in James's, the symbolic gesture carrying more weight than I'd expected. The warmth of James's fingers closing around mine felt like coming home.

The officiant began the ceremony, his words washing over me as James and I stood face to face, hands joined. Just as he prepared to lead us through our vows, a small voice interrupted.

"Wait!" Harper called out, her hand shooting into the air. "I have something to say!"

The officiant looked startled, glancing between James and me.

I nodded, smiling. "Let her speak."
