Chapter 27 Untitled Chapter

Chapter 27 Untitled Chapter
CLAIRE

My welcome home party was fast approaching, which means the day we left for the human territory was fast approaching. Early that morning, I sneaked back to the bedroom because Hunter literally pushed me out.

Although, I wanted to fight him on it, but decided not to. Jet was starting to become suspicious of us after I refused to go with Hunter on his mission. On the bright side to a brand new day, I sent out a letter to Alpha Jordan about meeting up at our usual place.

While waiting for his response, I walked into the breakfast hall. My eyes immediately went to Hunter’s usual seat, relieved flooding through my body when I found it empty. Not wanting to risk it however, I reached for the seat closer to Kale and sat down.

“Morning Claire, did you sleep alright?” Freya asked, reaching for one of the dishes.

I looked at her for any indication that would suggest that she knew I spent the night in one of the guest bedrooms because Hunter was being an asshole. He was clearly right, when he said I have no idea how much of an asshole he could be, how did I not see it before?

Probably because we’ve never been at each other’s throat. Unlike a lot of mates around, Hunter and I have known each other the longest. We grew up together, we became friends, each other’s first crush and secret admirer.

Seems like forever ago, I recalled the last statement he made before he pushed me out of the bedroom, something about saving me from myself. On the surface level, I understood what that meant, but why he needed to do that was something I couldn’t wrap my head around.

“Better than I used to sleep at the institute.” I replied, relishing in the satisfaction of watching guilt cloud her eyes.

Everyone might have chosen to forget how Dane Grayson ruined our life, I didn’t forget. His daughter shouldn’t be made to either! As seconds trickled by and there was still no sign of Hunter, I decided to speak with Jet without him being there to intervene.

“Jet, did Hunter mention anything about seeking an audience with Alpha Drekonia? He was hoping to speak with her before we left for the mission.”

“Did he change his mind again? He told me this morning that there’s no longer any need for it.” Jet answered, half-turning to his mate.

That bastard! I shrunk away from Jet’s watchful eyes, wondering how I was going to speak to the one person I have met in my lifetime that’s the same wolf as me! Hunter has stooped too low for me to let him get away with! I’m going to make him pay for messing with me like this.

Since Jet was deeply involved in a conversation with Freya. I turned to Kale, who looked as deeply in thoughts of his own. Since when has breakfast been this serious?

Tapping him gently to wake him up from it, I asked. “Is Hunter still working at the camp?”

“Yes, he left early this morning due to an emergency. I will be joining him there after breakfast, why do you ask?”

“No reason in particular.” Forcing a pleasant smile on my face, I pushed the chair back and stood up.

Hunter has this after school training for teenagers, which he has dedicated his life to. He started the little project after he became the Beta, something psychological that has to do with his parents. He blamed himself for not being able to protect them when the council men attacked his pack.

Forgetting the fact that he was a child himself, aside from me, being a Beta, it was another thing he was passionate about. Tucking my hair behind my ear, I went into the storage room to grab some fuel, pouring into a small container.

Once I was done with that, I strolled into the servant quarter, where the kitchen was located. The servants all stopped what they were doing when they saw me, waving them aside, I motioned toward one of them.

“Could you grab me a match stick or a lighter?”

“Sure Lady Claire.” She went away, returning a few minutes later with what I asked.

“There you are Claire…” Said Freya, cutting in front of me as I emerged from the kitchen, into the hallway.

“Yes?”

“You asked Jet about seeking an audience with Alpha Drekonia, I figured you want to see her? I can arrange for you to meet with her. We’ve met a couple of times while I was researching…” She leaned over, her voice almost a whisper.

“Between you and me, she isn’t that strict once you get to know her.”

“Really?” At that moment, whatever reservations I had about her became secondary. “Are you saying you can arrange a meeting between us? No take back! I’m holding you to it.”

She laughed. “Of course, I will give her a call and see when she will be available to meet with us.”

I nodded, turning to leave. As she reached to stop me, only to gasp and flinch back when her hand made contact with me. Frowning, I turned around to see if she was alright.

She tried to touch me again, probably to see if she had just imagined what happened. As soon as her hand made contact with mine, she flinched away once more. This time, they were burnt imprints on her palm.

“What?” Frowning, I touched her, examining the mark. “Are you alright? What happened?”

“I don’t know…” she answers, watching as the burn simmers for a few seconds and fades, her werewolf genes kicking in place to heal her almost immediately.

“This doesn’t make sense, I hugged you the first day I arrived and nothing happened. Now? I can’t touch you, has this happened with anyone else?”

“No, don’t worry about it. Perhaps I’m just allergic to humans.” I said half-jokingly. “I have to go, I will see you later.”

I walked away, thinking back on what happened. As much as I tried to make a joke of what happened, I have no idea why it happened or the reason behind it. One thing was for certain, I wasn’t going to waste my time dwelling on it.

If Freya can’t touch me without getting burnt, I count that as a win. Getting to the tables, my eyes scanned the horses until they rested on jello, Jet prized horse.

He’s magnificent, a dark stallion, with black healthy mane. However, the moment I reached for him, he jerked away from me. Ha, acting better than me huh? I thought.

There will be other times to ride it, I was on a mission and dealing with stubborn horses wasn’t part of it. Taking a gentler horse, I rode out into the field, and out of the estate.

About twenty minutes later, I arrived at Hunter’s camp or whatever he called it. They were in the yard, doing some exercises as usual. Walking through the place, which was built like a watch tower fort because he wanted to stimulate a battle field.

Like whose parents sign their kids up for something like that? Shaking my head in disapproval, I strolled into their weapon room. For a place that’s designed to alert them of enemies, it’s sure easy to penetrate.

I gave them the benefit of doubt since it was only for stimulation. Getting to the weapon room, I drowse everything there in fuel before lighting it up.

The wooden ranks where most of the weapons hang were the first thing that started to burn. I quickly left the room, making my way outside like I was never there when suddenly…!

“Lady Claire!” A shrieking high pitched voice called out to me.

At first I wanted to ignore the voice and carried on my way, before I wasn’t given much of a choice when a swamp of teenagers surrounded me.

“Please don’t hug me.” I pleaded, which fell on deaf ears.

“Beta told us what happened to you, then he had to leave to rescue you.” One of them said, as they started pulling away from me.

I opened my mouth to respond when I spied Hunter leaning toward the door frame. He winked at me when our eyes met and I shot him a death look. Ignoring him to pay attention to the kids I suddenly find interesting, I thank them for their enthusiasm.

“I have to go now, don’t listen to your instructor by the way.” I told them, earning a couple of laughter from them because they thought I was joking.

“Wait… is something burning?” Asked Hunter, walking away to examine the source of the fire.

The kids rushed after him, and I took that as my cue to leave. Climbing back on my horse, I urged it forward, glancing back to see them scream fire while bursting around the place for water.

That will teach him to think twice before messing with me! Today I only burnt his weapon room to teach him a lesson, next time, I won’t be so generous!
