Chapter 52: A Friend’s Help

Chapter 52: A Friend’s Help
Damian didn't look at Evelyn again. He told the nurses, "Take Director Worth away immediately. Don't delay Sienna's aunt's rest."

The nurses exchanged glances but eventually succumbed to Damian's commanding presence, scrambling to move Director Worth's folding bed.

Evelyn's body felt paralyzed, her blood seemingly frozen. She could only watch as Damian—the man who once swore to protect her—now used his broad back to form an impenetrable shield for another woman and her relative. She and the person she valued were mercilessly cast out.

Sienna leaned weakly into his embrace and shot Evelyn a triumphant, contemptuous glance.

Damian never looked back, not once.

Evelyn's eyes immediately went red, but she bit her lower lip hard, forcing herself not to cry.

She couldn't cry.

Not in front of the Director.

She turned to the hallway. Director Worth lay fragilely on the simple bed, her clouded eyes wide with confusion and fear.

"These thugs!" Sophie suddenly rushed to Evelyn's side. "They're despicable!"

She grabbed Evelyn's cold hand. "Stop wasting time on them! We'll handle this ourselves!"

Sophie immediately pulled out her phone, stepped away quickly, and dialed a number. Her voice was low but urgent, explaining the situation in a few rushed sentences.

The person on the line was Ethan.

"Ethan? It's Sophie... yes, Evelyn is in trouble... no, not her, it’s Director Worth... it’s bad. Could you possibly..."

Ethan on the other end seemed to instantly grasp the seriousness of the situation.

Shortly after Sophie hung up, a private ambulance with the Sinai Mount Hospital logo pulled up outside. Professional medics carefully transferred Director Worth to a fully equipped mobile bed.

Under the stunned gaze of the Central Hospital nurses, Director Worth was carefully moved. Evelyn rode with the Director in the ambulance. When the door closed, cutting off the noise outside, her tight nerves finally eased a little.

That night, in a top-floor VIP recovery suite at Sinai Mount Hospital, warm light illuminated Director Worth's peaceful, sleeping face. An exclusive caregiver was tucking her blanket in. The room was silent save for the regular tick of the machines.

Ethan stood outside the room, handing Evelyn a cup of warm water.

"Director Worth is out of danger. The rehabilitation facilities here at Sinai Mount are the best in New York, and I personally selected the caregiver. You can stop worrying."

Outside the corridor window, the city lights blurred into a beautiful ocean of color. Evelyn looked at her pale, worn reflection in the glass. She said softly, "Thank you, Ethan. I'm always putting you out."

Ethan shook his head and pulled a brown envelope from his briefcase, handing it to her. "This is what you needed."

Evelyn took it, puzzled. When she opened the seal and pulled out the file, the title made her pupils contract instantly.

"The Complete Evidence Chain of Dreven’s Illegal Organ Trading."

"I submitted it to the police anonymously. They're moving fast; Dreven will be summoned for questioning this afternoon. This doctor is key to Sienna's fake pregnancy certificate. Once he breaks, Sienna's lie falls apart."

Evelyn took the envelope, her fingers trembling as they touched the thick paper. She opened it and flipped through the documents: photos, transfer records, encrypted communication...

Every detail was rock-solid proof.

She knew gathering this material was no easy task.

She looked up. "Thank you."

It felt like all she had done since leaving Damian was rely on the people around her.

Ethan shook his head. "We're friends, Evelyn. I won't just stand by while you carry this burden alone. You've done well enough already."

...

However, the situation was not as simple as they had hoped.

The following afternoon, Evelyn received a call from the police. The voice was impersonal and cold, informing her that Dr. Dreven had been questioned.

"Mr. Dreven denies all charges."

The officer’s voice was emotionless. "Furthermore, it appears he destroyed some key digital and paper evidence before we took action. The evidence we currently have is insufficient to prosecute him, let alone involve anyone else."

"He also claims his relationship with Miss Sienna is just a standard doctor-patient relationship, and the money transfers were merely... private loans."

The call ended. Evelyn gripped her phone, her palm cold and sweaty.

"Shit!" Sophie, who had overheard the summary, cursed under her breath. "That Dreven! That bitch Sienna must have warned him! They moved fast!"

Evelyn closed her eyes, that sense of helplessness flooding her again. She should have realized that people like Sienna and Damian wouldn't leave a weakness so easily.

Without direct evidence, she couldn't prove Sienna faked the pregnancy and miscarriage. That woman would continue to play the victim, perfectly safe, and keep everything that rightfully belonged to Evelyn.

"Are we just going to accept this?"

"Absolutely not!" Sophie said firmly.

She leaned in close to Evelyn. "If the direct approach fails, we go under the radar. Honey, remember? You spent time in the Omni archives."

Evelyn's head snapped up. She looked at Sophie.

"Didn't you tell me you found records of Omni Group stealing independent designer work?" Sophie prompted. "Damian's company is publicly traded. How clean could their past be? If we can dig up more dirt, even if we can't send Sienna to jail, we can ruin Damian's reputation!"
