Chapter 48 Not Allowed to Go

Chapter 48 Not Allowed to Go

"You!"

Susan was furious and about to unleash a tirade when Michael, standing beside her, stopped her.

He pressed her hand and shook his head slightly, signaling her not to act impulsively.

This matter could be big or small. If they insisted on confronting her right now, Gavin would be a huge problem. Better to back down for now and leave some room for maneuver.

They could settle the score with Flora later, after this whole thing blew over.

Susan naturally understood this too. She gritted her teeth and suppressed her anger again and again. After a long while, she finally forced out a smile, her tone dripping with barely contained rage: "Flora, I was wrong just now. I was too anxious and said things in the heat of the moment. Please don't take it to heart."

"Everything I did was ultimately hoping you two sisters could get along well and not have any misunderstandings because of this."

Looking at her twisted face beneath the exquisite makeup, Flora just found it laughable. "Since I've already been kicked out of the Smith family and am now a member of the White family, we haven't been family for a long time. Stop trying to act close with me."

"Flora, I know you're still angry. We did favor your sister, but she suffered so much out there, and she only just came back to us. I think your biological parents should be able to understand how we feel right now." Michael sighed, his brow furrowed with deep exhaustion and worry. "What parent doesn't want their children to be safe and healthy?"

His tone was serious as he spoke to her, "I know you're resentful, and it's Mom and Dad who wronged you, but could you please, for the sake of our twenty-plus years together, let your sister off this time?"

"I'll definitely discipline her properly from now on and won't let her cause you any more trouble." Susan looked down on Flora's attitude and hated her fake high-and-mighty act even more, but given that she now had Gavin's support, and fearing the scandal would spread and damage the Smith family's reputation, she had no choice but to swallow her pride and bow her head.

To show his sincerity, Michael took out a card and handed it to Flora, saying gently: "There's a million dollars here. The password is your birthday. I know your biological parents aren't well-off, and you're stubborn—you'd rather suffer than ask for help—but we're still family."

"Consider this compensation. Please take it."

His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say more, but in the end he pressed them together and said nothing.

"I don't need the money." Flora stared coldly at the card without moving. "Otherwise people will say that I claim to cut ties with the Smith family, but behind the scenes I'm still clinging on and taking your handouts."

"That's a misunderstanding..."

Flora looked away, clearly not wanting to hear his explanation.

Everyone knew the truth in their hearts. She didn't want to waste energy dealing with these fake pleasantries.

She lifted the blanket and got out of bed. "Let's go to the police station."

Hearing this, Michael thought she was tough on the outside but soft inside, and that she had finally agreed to go to the police station to sign a settlement agreement. His heart leaped with joy, and he stopped insisting she take the money, a genuine smile appearing on his face.

"What are you going to do now?"

Just as everyone was about to leave, the hospital room door suddenly swung open, and Ava walked in, bumping right into them.

Seeing Flora getting up to leave, her brow immediately furrowed deeply. She strode forward and pushed her back onto the bed. "Your wound hasn't healed yet. The doctor repeatedly told you to rest properly. What are you trying to do?"

Flora patted her hand lightly, signaling her not to worry. "I need to go to the police station to visit my sister."

She had been taking care of her closely these past few days, thoughtful in every way. Flora saw it all and remembered it all.

Hearing this, Ava looked completely confused and instinctively asked: "Sister? What sister? You only have one sister—me."

But remembering Michael and Susan behind her, she came to her senses. Her eyebrows lifted as she sneered: "Oh, you mean that sister who kicked you out of the Smith family, mocked you every time you met, spread rumors about you behind your back, tried to get me to gang up on you with her, and even tried to kill you while you were sick by tampering with your medicine, hoping to leave you permanently disabled—Vivian?"

As she finished speaking, she turned around, her contemptuous gaze falling on Michael and Susan's uncomfortable faces.

Seeing an outsider publicly criticizing Vivian, Michael's expression darkened instantly, the pressure around him dropping to freezing point.

His tone was stern and full of displeasure as he scolded: "Girl, don't talk nonsense. My daughter may be impulsive, but she never intended to kill Flora. She was just manipulated by others."

Ava crossed her arms and nodded casually, smiling as she agreed: "Right, who doesn't know it was your innocent, kind, and lovely daughter who snuck into the hospital, disguised herself as a nurse, and tried to drug my cousin?"

"You'd better pray the police don't find any deadly toxins in that drug, or not just her—I'll make sure the entire Smith family learns their lesson!" Her gaze was sharp, and the intimidating aura she suddenly unleashed instantly shocked Michael and Susan.

Coming to his senses, Michael realized he had lost his composure. A flash of embarrassment crossed his face as he quickly denied: "She wouldn't do that."

"As compensation, all of Flora's subsequent medical expenses, treatment costs, and any other expenses will be covered by the Smith family."

Ava couldn't stand how they made something that should be a given sound like a huge favor. She immediately rolled her eyes and retorted: "That's what you should do anyway."

She lifted her chin and announced: "In any case, my cousin absolutely won't go to the police station to settle. Just wait for the lawyer's letter."

Flora looked up and saw Ava protecting her like a mother hen. She couldn't help but smile softly: "Indeed, my injury needs rest, so I won't go."

"No way!" Susan immediately objected.

She stepped forward and shouted at the suddenly appearing Ava: "Where did this bitch come from? Is it your place to speak here?"

If it weren't for her, Flora would already be in their car heading to the police station!

Just as Susan finished playing the unreasonable role, Michael smoothly stepped in to ease the situation, assuming the posture of an understanding elder mediating the conflict. "I know you're looking out for Flora, but this is the Smith family's business. Since you don't know the full story, don't jump to conclusions."

But soon, he changed his tone: "Or are you deliberately trying to drive a wedge between Flora and us?"

Ava wasn't that articulate to begin with, and being outnumbered, she couldn't argue with the two of them and soon found herself losing ground.

Seeing Ava gradually falling behind, Flora reached out and took her hand, gently pulling her back to her side.

She looked directly at the two: "You're very good at twisting words, but are you sure you want to bully my people at a time like this?"

Just one sentence made them both shut up.
