Chapter 44
Julia POV
It was so quiet here. I slowly spun around on the spot. Trying to take in everything. I didn't know if this place was real, or if it was just a figment of my imagination.
It was so beautiful here.
As I turned around, my eyes, once again, landed on the golden wolf. She was massive, when you compared her to regular wolves. I'll admit, I would say she was bigger than the few warriors I had treated in the pack hospital.
I smiled shyly at the great wolf, then sunk into a low bow, it seemed like the right thing to do. The power emanating from her was very potent.
\[should I kneel?\] I thought to myself. Unsure what the protocol was in this type of situation.
"You do not need to do anything, child. I am you and you are me. We are but one creation, made in the Goddess's own image, by her immortal hands."
I gasped at the words, for they were not spoken into my mind. They were spoken from the great wolfs mouth.
I heard a chuckle. I looked up so I could look the wolf in the eye. My mind was like a bag of noodles. Nothing made sense. Then, Onyx spoke again.
"I think it is time to explain everything to you, Julia. Please sit, relax by the fire and I will explain what is going on."
The fire? There was no fire! I could feel warmth spread over my back, and spun on my heel to see a small but perfectly formed camp fire. I knew it had not been there before.
Nonetheless, I sank down on some cushions that had also appeared and waited for the wolf to speak.
"Julia. Do you know anything about the legend of Onyx? Did your father ever mention me in his Alpha training?"
I looked at Onyx in confusion. Alpha training? Why would she think I had gone through any Alpha training. I was sure now, that this beautiful creature had made a mistake, and had entered my soul instead of her real soul-sharer. I told her as much. Onyx merely sighed.
I heard her mumble something that sounded like, "of course."
I was still so confused, but I wanted to try and help her. Before I could say anything, Onyx stood next to me. The heat radiating from her body was almost as intense as the fire I currently sat next too. But looking up at the great wolf, I still shivered. Something was about to happen. I could feel it.
Onyx whispered into my mind, this time, she simply said, "May I?”
All I could do was nod my head, not sure at all what was about to happen. As soon as I made the nodding gesture, Onyx rested her huge head on top of my head.
Suddenly there was a flash of bright light, so bright I had to shut my eyes. As I did, images, sounds and memories started to pour into my mind. It was so overwhelming, that when Onyx had finished, and had stepped away from me, I dropped to the ground. Breathing hard, I tried to make sense of my thoughts.
slowly but surely, things started to settle. My mind, started to make sense of all this new information. My first thought was of my father. Not a warrior, as I had been led to believe.
No. He was not a warrior. My father had been an Alpha. That meant that Eva and I had Alpha blood flowing through our veins.
Something else started to make sense as well.
The night my father died, he was not killed by a rogue. No. My father had been killed by a warrior. I just didn't know where this warrior hailed from.
"Before I ask questions my questions, Onyx. Would you please continue, I now know a little bit about you."
Onyx nodded her head once, then carried on speaking.
"I just broke the seal that had been placed on your memory. That is now why you know that our father was an Alpha. Your memories were locked away and have been manipulated since the night he died.
Had this spell not been cast on you, you would have always been aware of my presence. I am angry at the loss of time taken from us. As well as the loss of our father.
I believe that father died protecting us. We were a secret to be kept until the time was right. Father, acting on intel from our elite warriors, led a search party to root out and punish those that would harm us. The tragedy that happened next, would send us down a path that did not belong to our destiny. Are you with me so far, Julia."
Onyx asked quietly. I again, nodded my head. I had no words at this point, and desperately wanted Onyx to explain more.
"Okay then. I will continue. Do you recall the legend of Onyx now?" She asked. I made a face that made her chuckle, lucky for me, Onyx understood what I meant.
"I will quickly retell the tale. So you understand fully."
I thanked her then watched as she took a deep breath in. I did the same, it was somehow cathartic. And needed.
"When Werewolves were first made, it was chaos. The longer the wolf had been in this realm, the more powerful he became. After a few hundred years, the Goddess started to see some wolves become far superior in strength, fighting and logical thinking. The Goddess named these few wolves Alpha's. The chosen few who the lesser wolves would look up to, would follow and trust. As this new structure took shape, the Alpha's were able to choose Betas and Gammas. This meant that the wolf hierarchy was born.
under this new structure; packs grew. And many of them became strong enough to meld smaller packs into the already formed pack.
this system worked well, until it didn't. Packs started wars with other packs, smaller packs were being decimated instead of welcomed and slowly the werewolves were fighting, not just the enemy, but within their own packs. It was completely out of control".
"It was at this point in time that the Goddess decided to create a wolf so powerful, that even established Alphas would be forced to respect and fear it.
That was when I, Onyx was created. I was not born as a pup might be. I was created as you see me now. The only difference is the colour of my fur. You see, I started my life with jet black hair."
"Oh." I said. That explained the name then. I frowned, "But Onyx, why were you able to turn this shade of gold? I have never in my life seen a golden wolf."
Onyx agreed that it was strange. As most wolves stay the colour they are born. Clearly, Onyx was the exception to this rule.
Onyx looked down at me, and I swear I could see her smile as she said one thing more. Almost in a reverent tone, she said, "Nevar."
