Chapter 52 I failed them
Alexander’s P.O.V.
“The contract is signed, and she is going to join our team in fifteen days. Why still this gloomy face?” Hunter asked me curiously while giving me a wineglass.
Without hesitation, I took the glass, but my mind was still reeling from everything that Amelia said in the meeting hall.
She convinced everyone with our logic, but her refusal hurt me the most.
Moreover, the more I learned about the people in her group, the more I felt like a failure.
“Are you still hung up on her refusal to share the details of that alpha and that pack?” Hunter asked me teasingly.
I sighed and took a big gulp of the wine before looking outside the window.
The sky had turned dark as the night was now following the evening light.
The same went with my heart.
“Logically speaking, she is right about not disclosing the confidential information of the clients, Alexander. Her resistance shows that we have found the best people to do business this time. Their professionalism is really something impressive.” He praised Amelia and her company, but my mind was still thinking about all the incidents that she had told us by now.
Including her own case.
If it weren’t for Marcus, she would have died that night.
And yet, I, their king, didn’t know a thing about these kinds of crimes in our world.
“I feel that I failed our people, Hunter. With so many victims in their team…… I am not talking about dead people, but living people…… where did we go wrong? Why don’t we get the information before them?” I asked Hunter in a hollow and distant voice, looking at the night sky through the window glass.
“Because we are still humans, Alexander. We can make laws and implement them strictly, but we can’t control the animalistic nature of some beasts hiding under the skin of humans. Neither did we predict every bad incident to stop it on time. People don’t come forward to seek justice for themselves. Yes. That’s our failure.” Hunter replied to me in a serious but hollow tone.
“Moreover, the victims got the justice they deserved. This matters the most. We have our perks of being in power, but we also have disadvantages. The poor believe that we will not hear them because they don’t have anything to give us in return. So, instead of seeking our help, they chose to endure and then to become evil by themselves or look for someone who can give them justice, but that someone is not us. This has been going on for generations, and you can’t change in a few days or months.” He continued in the same hollow and distant tone.
For the next few minutes, none of us speaks again. We both just continued drinking the wine, lost in our thoughts deeply.
Amelia’s face danced in front of my eyes all this time.
The way she reacted to me in private….. the way she kept her face cold when she is in public.
The way she spoke confidently and calmly during the meetings in a room filled with all the influential people of our world.
The way she kept her head high, but…….
What others can’t see is the pain that she had hidden behind that façade of being strong.
An abused omega wolf who was assaulted and beaten to death, yet she not only survived but also gave birth to a pup, a symbol of that assault.
Yet, instead of hating him, she loves that pup and has been doing everything in her strength that she can to save him ever since he was born.
Apart from that, she is determined to give every shattered soul a place to heal and rise.
And what am I doing?????
“What is going on in your mind, Alex? I have never felt you so distressed, except that one time.” Hunter asked me worriedly, shattering the thick silence.
I sighed aloud and put the empty glass on the table beside me.
“We need to change the system, Hunter,” I replied to him calmly, but now so many things were clear in my mind.
“We can’t do it alone.” He muttered helplessly.
“And we are not alone,” I added right after he finished speaking.
“Who?” he asked immediately, curiosity evident in his voice.
The corner of my mouth tugged in a faint smirk.
“The establishment of that pack with the approval of all the powerful people of our world is the foundation of that change, Hunter. Marcus and his team only want to have a place to live peacefully, but they don’t know that they are opening a gate for all those shattered souls who have been tortured for generations.” I replied to him calmly, looking at the half moon that appeared in front of the window.
“Damn. This is going to create chaos.” He muttered worriedly, but I shook my head gently.
“No. This will not. According to the clause in the agreement that they signed with the council, they need to contact the throne and the council before taking someone new in their pack if the person approaches them on their own.” I reminded him of what we had in that agreement.
“Yup.” He muttered in the same worried tone.
“The next clause gave them full freedom to rescue anyone they find outside the pack boundaries. It will be the throne, which will provide the medical resources and emergency treatment to that person, and also the person will have the freedom to choose whom he or she wants to speak to, and that authority will have the freedom to choose how much they want to reveal the situation to the special cell.” I pointed out the other clause.
“But this clause has a problem, Alex.” Hunter interrupted me in a serious tone.
I looked at him while raising my brows questioningly.
“I forgot to tell you that Amelia requested some amendments to this clause before signing the contract. I made a note there that this clause is not included in the contract until further amendment.” He told me, and my face went expressionless.
“This clause is a major decision, Hunter. You should have asked me before making her sign the contract with this note.” I remarked coldly.
“I know, Alex, but they have waited too long to get this approval. I didn’t want more complications for them. Moreover, this is between us, the administration, and them. We can amend the contract as many times as we want, but for now, they need to have some peaceful nights.” He reasoned with a serious expression on his face.
I wanted to scold him for deciding by himself, but I kept my mouth shut.
Because he was right. I will remember how relieved Amelia was when the council announced their decision.
"Okay. Let's have another round of discussion with only Marcus and Amelia. We need to listen to their concerns, and also we need to tell them to what extent we can help them." I instructed them while thinking about something.
"But the problem is your distant sister," Hunter muttered angrily.
"What happened?" I asked him coldly.
