FIRE VS DEATH

FIRE VS DEATH
POV: Dorian

The Battlefield

The field was still burning when the world came to a standstill.

Not just quiet still.

Ash froze mid-fall. Embers hung like fireflies trapped in glass. Wolves caught mid-howl, mid-stagger, mid-breath. Even Araya’s Hollowflame paused, a banner of light held in the air.

Only I moved.

And the lilies bloomed.

Black as void, soft as ash, they unfurled across corpses, out of shattered stone, along seams of melted iron. Petals opened and closed with a breath no throat gave. Their scent—sweet rot, familiar curled into my lungs.

“Dorian.”

Her voice was low, velvet, and absolute.

Death.

She rose from the lilies as if she’d been sleeping there all along. Tall, veiled in funeral white, mouth painted black, bracelets of bone clattering at her wrists. Wherever she stepped, the battlefield cracked not from weight but from the living refusing to admit she’d passed.

“You fought War,” she said. “Now you are mine.”

Breath left me in a fog that didn’t fade. My chest felt too heavy, my ribs too wide.

“Not yet.”

Death tilted her head. Her veil brushed the ground, wet with silver light from the seam above. “Every oath burns. Every thread breaks. But death, death endures. Even verdicts kneel when I touch them.”

Behind me, Araya was frozen mid-step, Hollowflame arcing from her palms. She looked like an unfinished painting. My chest ached at the sight of her caught between one breath and the next.

“I’m not yours,” I said.

“Everything is mine,” Death whispered.

POV: Nyxara

Her laugh cracked through my skull like sparks.

He is mine.

Nyxara’s voice was flame against my ribs, claws in my throat. The Hollowflame in Araya’s hands pulsed once in answer, as if Nyxara had leaned on her from the inside.

Fire rippled across the frozen field, not melting it but defying the stillness Death carried.

You will not take him, pale sister, Nyxara snarled, feral and wild. He carries verdict and flame. My bond. My mark. My choice.

Death’s veil stirred, though no wind moved. Beneath it, her black mouth curved, sharp as knives.

“Love is a chain you wear gladly,” Death murmured. “Curious. My sisters always hated chains.”

Nytheria’s laughter answered from the seam above, vast and star-bright.

“Curious indeed,” she whispered. “Perhaps love is the one chain wolves will not burn.”

The lilies swayed though nothing touched them. Their petals brushed my boots, cold as snowmelt, leaving faint glimmering stains on my skin.

Death reached out. Her hand was pale, like bone, with fingers threaded with black silk.

“Come,” she said—not a command but a law spoken quietly. “You are marked for me already. Why resist the inevitable?”

My knees trembled. Shadows curled at the edges of my vision. The battlefield tugged at me, as though gravity had found a new direction downward, inward, into the dark behind her veil.

Stand, Nyxara growled Nyxara, her voice thick with fire. Don’t kneel. You are not hers.

“I…” My chest burned. My heart slowed one beat, then another.

The lilies leaned toward me, petals closing like mouths.

I burst out to him

Not body, not flame, but voice.

The battlefield flared with Hollowflame, fighting Death’s stillness. The lilies hissed, petals curling, smoke rising black. Wolves groaned in their frozen half-poses, as though my scream dragged them closer to moving again.

He is mine!

Death’s veil fluttered. She leaned down, curious.

“You speak like a goddess,” she said. “But you are only wolf-fire wearing a girl’s skin.”

Nyxara’s laugh was pure flame. And yet I keep what I want.

POV: Death

She drew her hand back. The lilies curled at her feet.

“Very well,” she said softly. “Not yet. But he will come to me. All things do.”

She lifted her hand and pressed a black painted kiss to her wrist. When she lowered it, a mark glowed faintly on Dorian’s chest bone white, shaped like a lily.

Her veil shifted. Teeth gleamed behind her smile.

“Remember,” she whispered, and stepped back into the lilies.

They folded around her, then collapsed into ash. The field unfroze.

POV: Dorian

Air punched into my lungs. Fire roared again. Wolves screamed, moving, staggering as if they’d lost a heartbeat and found it again too late.

Araya’s Hollowflame finished its frozen arc. She stumbled, gasping, eyes darting to me.

“Dorian?” she called.

I pressed a hand to my chest. The lily mark pulsed cold beneath my palm.

“I’m here,” I said. My voice shook. “But she touched me.”

Nyxara growled low in my bones, fierce and protective. You are not hers. You are mine.

The seam above flickered. Nytheria’s laughter slid down like starlight spilt from a broken jar.

“Curious,” she whispered again. “Chains you fight. Chains you keep. We will see which one holds when the Loom breaks.”

The laughter faded. The pulse boomed once, louder, shaking ash from the sky.

I stood in the wreck of lilies, hand over my marked chest, knowing Death had not left she had only promised to wait.
