FIRE VS WAR

FIRE VS WAR
POV: Araya

The Field of Iron

War came crowned in blood.

His army rolled across the valley like an avalanche, armour clattering, banners dripping red ink and older stains. Wolves snarled. Men hammered spears on shields. Things that had once been wolves but were now only scars shuffled in his ranks, hollow-eyed, their howls empty echoes of a god’s command.

He led them tall as a siege tower, shoulders plated in iron thicker than temple doors. Each plate wept blood that smoked and hissed in the dirt. His sword was no blade but a slab serrated with the teeth of wolves he had killed. The air bent around it.

“Little flame,” War said, voice cracking stone. The ridges shook. Wolves in my ranks shuddered, not at death they had known that but at remembering how often they had bowed to that voice.

Nyxara’s laugh licked the inside of my ribs. Show him. Show him what verdict tastes like when fire stops asking permission.

The seam above pulsed once. The battlefield went still.

I lifted my hands.

And the fire answered.

The First Clash

Hollowflame tore from me in a wave.

The first line vanished before it screamed—armour blistering, banners erupting, spears sagging like wax. Wolves staggered mid-charge, paws burning into ash. Men shrieked, shields liquefying between their fingers. Horses reared, eyes catching fire, manes dissolving into sparks.

The river that cut the battlefield boiled in an instant. Steam roared upward, cloaking the ridge. When it cleared, only glass and bones floated on bubbles that popped with tiny screams.

War lifted his sword and brought it down.

The strike split the world. Stone cratered, sand flew, wolves tumbled as if mountains had been kicked. The edge of his blade slammed where I stood—earth caved, sparks scattered, dust choked the air.

When it cleared, Hollowflame curled around me like an unbroken crown.

War snarled. His teeth were red, his eyes molten.

“You cannot burn me. I am the first blood spilt. The scream in the cradle. The hunger that makes men carve each other open.”

I raised my chin. “Then starve.”

The Army Breaks

He roared, and his army surged again—a tide of blades, spears, claws, teeth.

I walked.

Each step pushed Hollowflame out in rings. Spears glowed, sagged, and ran to the ground. Wolves lunged, igniting midair, their howls breaking into sparks. The fire devoured the promises that had forged their chains. Vows snapped: I swear to fight. I swear to kill. Ash answered.

War bellowed, raising his sword. His command trembled through their bones, but many knees bent the wrong way not to him, to the flame.

Some wolves dropped weapons. Some clawed at their throats, tearing away collars. Others simply collapsed, free for the first time and too weak to stand.

The battlefield became chaos: half fighting, half scattering, half consumed. The river was gone; only a glowing trench of glass remained.

I spread my arms. Hollowflame surged wider, turning the valley into an oven. Banners caught, ignited, vanished.

War roared again, but his army did not rally.

They broke.

The Duel

Now it was him and me.

He strode through the ash, armour dripping molten blood, sword glowing at the edge. Each step crushed wolves beneath his boots, friend and foe alike.

I stepped down from the ridge, Hollowflame wreathing my hair until it streamed like a banner of light.

He swung.

The serrated edge cleaved the air. I raised both palms, caught it in Hollowflame. The blade screamed, teeth melting, iron folding like wax. War tore it free, snarling, half a weapon left.

He swung again. I burned the air itself. Flame lashed up the edge into his arm, melting armour to skin. He howled not in pain but in rage at being wounded. He dropped the ruined weapon and came with fists.

Each blow shook the world.

Knuckles struck like falling stars. I caught them in Hollowflame, burning flesh from bone. He slammed his forehead into mine. Sparks flew. My vision rang, but I did not fall.

We fought to the beat of the pulse.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Each beat cracked his armour, poured more Hollowflame through me.

War faltered, blood running from his mouth, his ears. His knees locked. He staggered and then he fell.

On both knees.

Before me.

Verdict

The battlefield went silent.

Ash drifted like snow. Rivers hissed, boiled away. Weapons lay melted into formless lumps. Wolves stared, breaths ragged, hearts thunderstruck.

War lifted his head. Blood streaked his jaw, teeth crimson. His eyes still blazed hatred, but beneath it was something worse: recognition.

“You are no queen,” he spat, blood flecking ash. “You are verdict.”

The words landed heavier than any blow. Not insult. Acknowledgment.

Hollowflame curled around me, rising in pillars, twining with void stars spilling from the seam above. The sky bent under it, galaxies swirling behind the fire like wings.

Nyxara leaned through the rift, half face glowing, void threaded with stars. Her smile was a blade.

“Yes,” she whispered, voice carrying across gods and wolves alike. “She remembers.”

The wolves bowed not from chains. Not from law. From awe.

Even War bowed his head, broken and bleeding in the ash.

POV: Araya

I lowered my hands. Hollowflame eased, leaving a valley of glass, ash, and silence.

Verdict.

The word stayed in my bones, heavy, final, and undeniable.

I was no queen. No goddess. No chained wolf.

I was fire.

And fire was verdict.
