ASHMOUTH BREAKS

ASHMOUTH BREAKS
POV: Ashmouth

Darkness has flavour.

Mine tastes of iron, rot, and bone ash. It pools at the edges of my prison where even shadow won’t settle. Beneath Solara, law drips from the chains like venom, trying to teach obedience.

I laugh.

Skulls along the cavern walls chatter—kings, alphas, priests, now only mouths. The sound climbs the black ceiling. No one hears it but me—and the gods who pretend not to.

The chains are older than memory. Council-forged, rune-cut from the Loom’s own bleeding script. Through wrists, ribs, and spine. They drink marrow and whisper with every twitch:

Be still. Obey. Repent.

I pull anyway.

Metal groans. Runes sputter like drowned candles. One day. One crack. One slip and I—

The floor shivers.

I still.

Not me. Not chains. Not skulls.

A pulse.

It booms through the stone like a hammer on a vast drum. My chest vibrates with it. For the first time in centuries, silence answers me—

—and my laugh turns wild.

POV: Selene

The bells toll.

Not for hands. For terror.

Solara’s white towers shiver. Spires sway without wind. Mortals look up and cover their ears; gods look up and don’t pray.

I rise, silver trailing. Bracelets burn. Smoke in my lungs where no fire is.

The bells toll again.

Ashmouth.

The name isn’t spoken, but it writes itself across every god’s ribs.

I move like someone crossing a house after a crash—careful, quick, pretending calm. The Council sphere waits: War’s gauntlets slam, Oath’s bands glow, Death smiles and says nothing.

“The chains weaken!” War bellows.

“They do not,” Oath snaps. “Law does not—”

“Then why do the bells toll?”

They turn to me. I am the moon. I am the answer.

I breathe. It trembles.

Because I hear it—the pulse.

It threads Solara like a vein, rattles the Loom, climbs the spires.

And beneath it—laughter.

\---

POV: Ashmouth

Every laugh costs flesh. Chains bite deeper, hauling blood like tribute. Ribs crack and mend in the same beat. My breath is black fire, spilling through cracks I’ve licked open with centuries of rage.

I laugh anyway.

One link snaps.

Not thunder—worse. Thunder dies. This echoes and refuses instruction.

Ash pours upward, crawling the seams into divine streets. Mortals will call it dust and sweep it from ledges. They won’t see the skulls riding the current.

Another link shatters.

Arms tear; bone splinters; bronze light spills like blood. Runes shriek. I answer them.

Skulls drop and split, whispering the names of the forgers. I mouth each like marrow.

“Selene,” I say to the stone, “you should have killed me.”

The pulse answers.

Boom.

My laughter falters.

\---

POV: Selene

I feel him.

His voice slips through Solara’s floor like smoke. My bracelets tighten. I bite my cheek until silver runs down my throat.

I remember binding him.

Iron and wet fur in the air. Wolves trembling at their own breath. He had burned packs. Devoured messengers. We dragged him under Solara and he laughed with blood on his lips.

I pressed the chain to his chest. My hands didn’t shake.

“You won’t kneel,” I told him. “So crawl.”

He laughed then.

He laughs now.

Different. No echo.

Because something else laughs with him.

The pulse.

War roars to descend. Oath insists law is immutable. Death murmurs, “When chains break, something lives again.”

I don’t shout.

I listen.

I hear the tremor under his laughter—the stutter when the pulse crawls into his chest and he does not own it.

\---

POV: Ashmouth

The pulse is a thief.

It asks no leave. It doesn’t care for oaths. It climbs ribs, skull, marrow. My laugh stutters; breath catches.

Skulls go still. Turn toward me. Listen.

Boom.

Chains burn hotter—but it’s not my pull. It’s the pulse.

For a heartbeat, fear touches my tongue. New. Unwelcome.

“NO,” I roar, shadows ripping like wings. “You will not own me!”

Ash geysers through the cracks, bleeding into Solara’s perfect streets. Marble greys. Mortals cough up old fire. Gods choke on memory.

I haul shadows upward, use them as hands. Each hand tears a chain. Black rain sheets from my skin.

The pulse surges. My laugh breaks against it.

I roar louder.

The chains break.

\---

POV: Selene

The bells toll until they crack.

I go to my knees in the chamber. Not worship—shock.

Ash floods Solara. Statues blacken. Streets split. Mortals flee, faces grey. Wolves across realms howl as one.

Ashmouth rises.

His breath claws my ankles; his laugh stains the light I wear.

Under it, the pulse.

Not his. Not mine. Older. Heavier. Breaking rhythm into law.

“He is no longer bound to us,” I say.

War curses. Oath burns. Death smiles wider.

The sky darkens as if ash had found it too.

Below, his laughter climbs—ruptured, furious, exultant.

The pulse hammers through it, reminding even him: freedom is not a rule.

\---

POV: Ashmouth

The world shakes.

Chains lie in glowing shards, sinking into ash. My body is ruin—torn, bleeding, luminous. My laughter is ragged but alive.

I lift my head. Shadows climb with me. Skulls orbit. Solara quakes; bells toll without hands.

I grin through blood and ash.

“The world will burn twice,” I tell the ceiling, the listening gods, the pulse. “Once for chains. Once for freedom.”

The pulse answers:

Boom. Boom. Boom.

I roar into it until the cavern splits.
