ASH QUEEN RISES

ASH QUEEN RISES
POV: Araya

Blackthorn’s hall breathed smoke and silence.

Torches hissed along stone walls, shadows bending beneath banners stitched with wolves that never lived. Incense and oil stung the lungs. Every bench overflowed with bodies pressed close, collars humming faint and cruel.

At the far end, the altar rose like a parasite in the dais. Pale wood pulsed with false life, roots threading deep into stone, runes crawling over its face in patterns that weren’t ours.

Kade knelt at its foot. Hollow-eyed. Broken. Whispering words that weren’t his.

Above him stood Adira—pale beneath her crown of braids, hands locked over the swell of her belly. Erik’s voice coiled through her womb like rot through water.

Hollowflame prowled my skin. My wolf clawed for release.

“Enough,” I said, and Blackthorn’s doors split wide.

\---

The hall gasped. Torches guttered. Shadows fled. The priest faltered mid-chant, his book trembling as if ashamed of its words.

I walked. Ash flaked from my heels—soft snow glowing red before paling to white. Wolves shifted uneasily. Their collars sparked, warning them not to notice me.

The altar pulsed harder. Roots strained. Erik hissed through Adira’s belly: Not strong enough. Not yours. Little flame, you’ll gutter like the rest.

Nyxara hummed in my skull. Show him what gutters.

I raised my hand.

Runes along my arm lit. Hollowflame surged. Fire leapt in a clean arc.

The dais erupted.

Roots shrieked, blackening mid-twist. Runes peeled away, turning to ash. The priest staggered back, robes aflame, screaming curses that dissolved into smoke.

The altar roared like a dying beast.

POV: Kade

Smoke blurred the world, but I saw her.

Ash snow drifted across her shoulders, red in the blaze devouring the altar. My lips split around the only sound I had left.

“Araya.”

The pulse answered.

It hit like thunder dragged through bone, rattling the cage where my wolf once lived. For a breath, I almost felt him again—gold eyes, bloody muzzle, howling through me. Then silence.

But the echo remained.

Collars cracked. Wolves staggered as sparks hissed. Some clawed at iron. Others bowed their heads as if they’d always known the weight wasn’t theirs.

Roots whipped up, choking my throat. I clawed, but flesh couldn’t break them. My vision tunneled.

Then fire knifed across the air.

Araya’s fire.

The root shrieked, split, crumbled to ash. I collapsed, coughing, breath clawing at my chest.

She didn’t look at me. She didn’t need to.

Her fire had already chosen.

\---

POV: Wolves

Ash fell like snow.

It found our muzzles, our fur, the raw places beneath collars. The altar screamed, but we heard something louder.

Her.

Not compulsion. Not leash. Flame that promised: I will burn myself to keep you warm before I ever burn you for bowing wrong.

We understood.

One by one, our muzzles lowered. Not to the altar. Not to the priest. Not even to Adira’s crown.

We bowed to her.

Chains cracked. Collars split. Some clattered to stone like rain. Others fell silent around throats that would never obey again.

The howl rose—low, reverent, raw.

The Loom shuddered. The pulse struck.

Two flames once sundered are whole again.

\---

POV: Araya

The altar thrashed, roots whipping like snakes. One lunged for me, black with Erik’s venom. Hollowflame met it clean, turning it to cinder mid-strike.

Another coiled Kade’s neck. My fire cut it down, leaving him gasping but alive.

The priest shrieked as runes failed. His book writhed, words wriggling like worms, then burst into ash. Shadows rejected him.

Adira swayed, pale, crown tilting. Her gaze locked on me—not recognition, but dread.

Erik whispered through her belly, cold and soft: Little flame. Winter is long. Ash drowns in snow.

Nyxara bared her teeth. We’ll see who freezes first.

I lifted both hands. Hollowflame surged—not wild but precise, a tide reclaiming its beach. It consumed the altar’s heartwood. It seared the roots. It ate the lie whole.

Ash thickened. Wolves bowed deeper, howls braiding into one defiant hymn.

And I stood at the center, crowned in Hollowflame.

\---

POV: Selene

From Solara’s hollow sphere, I felt it.

The Loom twisted, screamed, then… adjusted.

The pulse braided beside the main rhythm, refusing to yield. The second beat cracked fire-pillars, rattled Solara’s spires. War howled for blood. Oath seared his wrists with panic. Death smiled like a mother at a child too sharp for its own good.

And I listened.

Through the veil, Blackthorn’s hall burned. The altar split to cinders. Wolves bowed free. Ash fell like snow.

The Ash Queen rose.

The Loom screamed. The pulse answered.

I trembled. Not with fear. With awe.

\---

POV: Araya

The roots collapsed. The dais split, coughing smoke and cinder. The altar died, leaving only ash where vows once rotted.

I looked at the wolves.

Their muzzles were raised. Their chains were gone. Their eyes—bright, alive—fixed on me.

I drew a breath. Fire settled into my bones, steady as a crown needing no metal.

“Raise your heads,” I said.

They did.

And in the silence that followed, their howls rose again—free, unbroken, ours.

Ash drifted. The hall burned clean.

The Luna’s Lie was ash.

The Ash Queen had risen.

And no one would ever put her back in fire’s cage.
