Chapter 51 The Plague’s Source

Chapter 51 The Plague’s Source
The ritual was going wrong.
Selene felt it the moment Aurora screamed, a shift in the ley line, a pulse of darkness that should have been contained, a hunger that was too old, too deep, too endless. The plague wasn’t flowing into her daughter. It was consuming her.
“Something’s wrong.” She started toward the circle, but Damon caught her arm.
“Selene, wait”
“Something’s WRONG.”
She pulled free, ran toward her daughter, but the plague pushed her back, a wall of red mist, thick and hungry, that burned when she touched it. She tried again, again, again, and each time the mist pushed her back, harder, colder, further.
Damon reached the wall beside her, his wolf rising, his claws tearing at the mist. It held. It always held.
“KAEL!” Selene screamed. “WHAT’S HAPPENING?”
Kael stood at the edge of the clearing, his face pale, his ancient eyes fixed on the circle. “The plague isn’t a disease. It’s a consciousness. Something that’s been waiting for a vessel for a thousand years.”
Selene’s blood ran cold. “Waiting for what?”
“For her.” Kael’s voice was barely a whisper. “For someone strong enough to hold it. Someone with power in her blood, darkness in her soul, light in her heart. The plague isn’t trying to destroy her. It’s trying to become her.”
Damon slammed against the mist, again and again, his claws tearing, his rage burning. “LET HER GO! LET HER GO!”
The mist held.
Inside the circle, Aurora was drowning.
The plague was in her now, of her, and she couldn’t tell where she ended and it began. It showed her things, visions of a thousand years ago, of wolves who’d tried to contain it, of wolves who’d failed. It showed her Victor, young and hungry and broken, the plague’s first victim, the plague’s first vessel.
He wasn’t corrupted, she realized. He was made.
The plague laughed in her mind. He was weak. He wanted power more than he wanted himself. So I gave it to him. I gave him everything he wanted. And he became nothing.
“What do you want from me?”
“Everything. The plague’s voice was soft, almost gentle. I want you to let go. To stop fighting. To let me in. To become what you were always meant to be”.
“I’m not Victor”.
“No”. The plague almost sounded pleased. “You’re so much more”.
It showed her what it could make her. A wolf without packs, without bonds, without anything except power. A wolf who could remake the world, could end the wars that had torn wolves apart for centuries, could create something new.
“You don’t have to carry the darkness”, the plague whispered. “You can become it. You can become more”
Aurora looked at the vision. At the world the plague was offering her. At the power she could have, the future she could build, the end of everything that had ever hurt her.
And she saw herself, alone at the center of it all. No mother. No father. No Cassian. No love.
“That’s not what I want”.
“It’s what you were made for”.
“No”. She pushed against the darkness, against the hunger, against the thousand years of rage and pain and need. I was made to choose.
She reached for the light.
Outside, Selene felt the shift before she saw it.
Aurora’s scream changed, not pain, not terror, but something else. Something that sounded like rage.
“She’s fighting,” she breathed. “She’s still fighting.”
Damon stopped throwing himself against the mist, his chest heaving, his eyes fixed on his daughter. “What can we do?”
Kael stepped forward. “The plague is connected to Victor. To what he was, what he became, what he left behind. She carries him inside her. She can use him, his power, his hunger, his need to fight it.”
Selene stared at him. “You want her to use Victor to fight the plague?”
“I want her to use everything she has. Everything she is. The darkness she carries, the light she was born with, the choice she made when she sealed him.” Kael’s eyes were ancient, knowing. “She’s the only one who can do this. She’s the only one who was ever meant to.”
The mist cracked.
Aurora stood at the center of the circle, her arms raised, her eyes black, her power, Victor’s power, the plague’s power, hers rising around her like a storm. The plague was trying to consume her, to become her, to remake her in its image.
And she was letting it.
Not because she was weak but because she was strong, because she was taking the plague into herself, making it hers, the way she’d made Victor hers. The way she’d made the darkness hers.
She wasn’t fighting the plague. She was absorbing it.
“AURORA!” Selene screamed. “AURORA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
Aurora’s eyes opened.
They were fully black. No silver. No light. No her.
But beneath the darkness, beneath the hunger and the rage and the thousand years of pain Selene saw her daughter.
For now, the black eyes said. For now, I’m still here.
The mist rose higher. The ley line pulsed. And the plague the ancient, endless, hungry plague flowed into Aurora like water into the sea.
She took it all.
