Chapter 45 The Reckoning
Chapter 45 The Reckoning
Damon watched his mate dissolve.
There was nothing he could do. Nothing anyone could do. Selene had become light itself, pure and terrible and beautiful, and Victor was unraveling with her, his darkness burning away, his power scattering into nothing.
She was destroying herself to save them all and he couldn’t stop her.
“AURORA!” He turned to his daughter, still trapped in the shadows, still fighting, still screaming. “AURORA, DO SOMETHING!”
Aurora heard him. Felt him. Felt her mother’s light and Victor’s darkness and the space between them, the space she’d been born to fill.
She reached.
The shadows answered. They always answered. But this time, she didn’t command them, didn’t control them, didn’t use them.
She became them.
She reached into the light, into the shadow, into the place where her mother was dying and Victor was burning, and she pulled.
She pulled her mother back. She pulled Victor’s power into herself. She pulled everything.
For one moment, she held the fate of the world in her hands. She could destroy Victor forever. She could become him. She could end everything that had ever been and start again.
She could be a monster.
Instead, she made a choice, not of power, not of destiny, not of fear but of love.
She didn’t destroy Victor. She sealed him in a place where he could never hurt anyone again. Where he could never be again. Not destroyed. Not freed. Just… ended.
In her own shadow.
She pulled him into the darkness that had always been hers, the darkness that had been waiting for her since before she was born, and she closed the door.
Victor screamed. The realm screamed. And Aurora, Aurora opened her eyes.
Silver. Her eyes were silver.
The shadow realm collapsed.
They woke in the temple.
The stone floor was cold beneath them. The forest was silent. And above them, the moon, the real moon, the silver moon, the moon that had watched over wolves for millennia shone down on them like a blessing.
Selene was alive. Damon held her, felt her breath, her heartbeat, her life. The binding was gone. The darkness was gone. She was free.
“Selene.” He pressed his forehead to hers. “Selene, you idiot, you absolute idiot”
She laughed weakly. “You love me anyway.”
“With everything I have.”
Across the temple, Aurora sat up. Her face was pale, her hands shaking, but her eyes, her eyes were silver. Clear. Hers.
Cassian reached her first, pulling her into his arms, holding her like he’d never let go. “You’re here. You’re here.”
Aurora clung to him. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Selene pushed herself up, crossed to her daughter, took her face in her hands. “You saved me.”
“You saved me first.” Aurora’s eyes filled with tears. “You were going to die for me. You were going to”
“I would do it again. A hundred times. A thousand.” Selene pulled her close. “You’re my daughter. You’re everything.”
Aurora held her mother, and for a long moment, there was nothing else. No darkness. No prophecy. No fear. Just a mother and daughter who had found each other again.
Then Kael stepped forward, his ancient face grim. “Victor is sealed. The binding is broken. But…” He hesitated. “He’s not gone. He’s in her. Part of her. Always will be.”
Selene’s grip tightened. “What do you mean?”
“I mean she carries him. The way the moon carries the night. The way the earth carries the dark. He’s not controlling her. He never will again. But he’s there. Watching. Waiting. For the moment she’s weak enough to let him in.”
Aurora pulled back, looked at her hands. The black was gone. The shadows were quiet. But she could feel him, a presence at the edge of her consciousness, a whisper she couldn’t quite hear, a hunger she would never feed.
“Can it be undone?” Damon asked. “Is there a way to separate them?”
Kael shook his head. “The ritual that sealed him was old. Older than any of us. It’s part of her now. Part of her blood. Part of her power.” He met Aurora’s eyes. “She’ll carry him for the rest of her life. But she’ll never be him. That’s the choice she made. That’s the choice she’ll keep making. Every day. For the rest of her life.”
Aurora looked at her mother, her father, at Cassian. The family who had fought for her, died for her, loved her.
“I can live with that.” She touched her chest, where the shadows still lived. “I can carry him. I can carry all of them. The pain. The fear. The darkness.” She smiled, and it was her mother’s smile, her father’s strength, her own fierce hope. “Because I’m not alone. I’ve never been alone. And I never will be.”
Selene pulled her close. “Never.”
Damon wrapped his arms around them both. “Never.”
And in the darkness, in the shadows, in the space between worlds, Victor watched and waited but for now, for this moment, this breath, this life, there was only light.
