Chapter 85 – The Face of the Monster

Chapter 85 – The Face of the Monster

Scarlett’s POV

The mist parted in slow, deliberate curls, and for a breath I forgot how to move.

He was there.
Or at least the shell of him.

John stood in the clearing, the dawn’s light sliding across his skin like oil over obsidian. His eyes glowed silver and black, flickering between man and shadow. The air around him pulsed alive, wrong, ancient.

Every instinct screamed. But my heart… it leapt.

“John,” I whispered, the name fragile in the heavy air.

He didn’t answer. The tilt of his head was too precise, too measured. When he finally spoke, the voice that came out wasn’t just his it carried another’s rhythm beneath it, low and echoing.

> “You shouldn’t have come.”

Each word seemed to bend the space between us. Leaves shivered on branches that no wind touched. I gripped the pendant around my neck, feeling its faint warmth pulse against my palm, the last relic of the bond that once tethered us in love, not in curse.

“I had to,” I said. “You called me.”

He took one step forward, the ground hissing under his boots. “I warned you not to answer.”

His eyes softened for a heartbeat real, human but the Goddess’s shadow washed over him again, drowning it out.

“She’s still inside you,” I said. “I can feel her.”

He closed his eyes. “You shouldn’t.”

“I can’t turn it off.” My voice cracked. “No matter what she’s done, I still feel you. The real you. And I know you’re fighting her.”

For a second, he looked like the man I remembered, the one who used to laugh against my skin and whisper plans for a life we’d never have. But then his jaw clenched, and the mist behind him stirred like a living thing.

> “Scarlett,” he said quietly, “you have to kill me.”

The words sliced through me. “No.”

> “You don’t understand. I’m slipping. She’s stronger every hour. When the moon rises again, she’ll take everything. And when she does—”

He didn’t finish. He didn’t need to. The silence said it all.

I shook my head, backing a step away though every part of me wanted to run to him. “There has to be another way.”

> “There isn’t.”

The ground trembled, a low rumble rolling through the forest. Above us, the clouds bled red and silver as if the sky itself were caught in their struggle.

He reached for me. I flinched. His hand hovered in the air between us black smoke coiling from his fingers, sparking faintly like dying starlight.

> “Please,” he said, voice breaking. “Before I can’t ask you again.”

Tears stung my eyes. “Don’t make me do this.”

The bond flared then wild, hot, desperate. Images flooded through me: his memories, my memories, tangled together. The night we first met under the full moon. The promise he’d whispered I’ll always find you. The taste of rain the day he left.

But beneath it all came another voice, silky and cruel.

> “Beautiful, isn’t it? The way pain feeds love.”

The Goddess’s laughter rang inside my skull. I staggered, clutching my head. “Get out!”

John gasped, doubling over as if struck. “She’s… using the bond.”

> “You gave her the doorway,” the Goddess purred through him. “Two hearts joined by fate makes such a perfect cage.”

I could feel her pushing through, testing me, her power cold and invasive. My mark burned. The trees around us warped, roots twisting into grotesque shapes.

John looked up, panic flickering in his eyes. “Scarlett, run!”

“I’m not leaving you!”

He roared, the sound half-human, half-something else. The air exploded outward, throwing me to the ground. When I lifted my head, his form was flickering shadows crawling over his skin, the Goddess’s voice speaking through his mouth now.

> “You should’ve listened, child. He’s mine.”

She raised his hand and the earth split open, vines of black light surging toward me. I rolled aside, slashing through them with my silver dagger, the one forged in the Moonfire ritual. Each strike left trails of pale flame.

“John! Fight her!” I screamed.

For a heartbeat, he hesitated. His hand trembled. The vines faltered.

That was my opening. I pressed my palm to my heart and whispered the invocation Elara taught me the one forbidden to all but the oldest Lunas.

> “By blood, by moon, by vow undone let the bond remember what love began.”

The air pulsed white.

Pain tore through me as the bond flared wide open. I saw everything, his memories, his rage, his sorrow and he saw mine. The light was blinding, the connection raw and unbearable.

“Scarlett,” he gasped, voice breaking through hers. “What are you doing?”

“Reminding you who you are.”

For a second, the Goddess screamed not through him, but from the shadows themselves. The trees bent away from the sound. The vines turned to dust. John fell to his knees, clutching his chest as black smoke poured from his mouth.

I stumbled toward him, ignoring the burning in my veins. “Stay with me!”

His eyes flicked up to mine blue again, clear and terrified. “You shouldn’t have done that…”

“I couldn’t watch you disappear.”

He smiled, weakly, painfully. “You always were stubborn.”

Then his smile vanished. He looked past me, horror dawning in his face.

Before I could turn, cold fingers brushed the back of my neck.

The Goddess stood there no longer a voice, but a shape, shimmering like liquid moonlight wearing a woman’s form. Her eyes were endless black. Her presence made the air vibrate, every living thing bowing under the weight of it.

> “Did you think love could banish me, little Luna?” she asked, almost kindly. “I was born from love. From its grief. It's hunger.”

I raised my dagger, my hands shaking. “Then you’ll die by it.”

She smiled. “So will you.”

Her hand shot forward, pressing against my chest. Fire ripped through me, sending me flying backward into the dirt. The world spun; the edges of my vision bled white.

Through the haze, I heard John’s snarl feral, furious and then a crack of thunder as he slammed into her. Shadows and light collided, their roars shaking the ground.

I crawled to my knees, every breath agony. They fought like gods, her form twisting, his body flickering between man and shadow, each blow tearing the forest apart.

Then, suddenly, silence.

When the dust cleared, I saw John standing over her, his chest heaving, his blade of light driven through her heart.

The Goddess smiled up at him, bloodless and beautiful.

> “Do you think killing me will save her?” she whispered. “Foolish boy. I never die, I INKY move.”

Her body dissolved into smoke, rushing toward me before I could move. The world blinked white.

And then I felt it cold and endless curling into my veins.

John screamed my name as the light swallowed everything.
