Chapter 82 – The Hollow Crown
Chapter 82 – The Hollow Crown
John’s POV
The first thing I remember was the silence.
Not the kind that comes with peace but the kind that follows destruction.
The world was dim, blanketed in a mist that smelled of burnt earth and blood. I could taste the metal on my tongue as I forced my eyes open, blinking against the ache that settled deep in my skull. The ground beneath me pulsed faintly, still warm from the energy that had torn through the ruins.
For a while, I didn’t know where I was. The last image burned into my mind was Scarlett’s face streaked with tears and moonlight just before the explosion swallowed everything. Then, nothing.
Now, there was only the quiet thrum of something ancient moving through my veins.
I pushed myself upright, my breath coming out in sharp, ragged bursts. The muscles in my arms trembled as if the air itself weighed a thousand pounds. When I looked down, I saw my hands glowing faintly beneath the skin threads of black light crawling along the veins.
It was her.
The Goddess.
Her voice didn’t come as a whisper this time. It was inside me steady, calm, almost tender.
> “Rise, my chosen one. The world has burned for you. Now, let it kneel.”
I gritted my teeth and forced the words out. “I didn’t ask for this.”
A faint laugh echoed inside my skull.
> “No, but you earned it. Power never asks permission, John. It simply takes.”
I staggered to my feet, scanning the horizon. The ruins of the village stretched before me houses split in half, stone walls turned to ash. The moon hung low and blood-red, its reflection bleeding through the puddles of water scattered around.
Everywhere I looked, I saw what I had done.
Bodies. Shadows. Wolves that had once served under my command, now lying still, their fur matted with soot. I should’ve felt guilt, but what washed through me instead was confusion like my heart had been buried beneath layers of frost.
> “They’re not lost,” the Goddess murmured, her voice soft as silk. “They are waiting.”
I turned, confused, just as one of the bodies began to twitch. My pulse quickened as the sound of cracking bones filled the air. The wolf’s eyes opened, glowing with faint silver light, then rose shakily onto its paws.
“Impossible…” I whispered.
Then another followed. And another. Soon, a dozen of them stood before me dead only moments ago, now breathing, moving. But there was something wrong. Their movements were sharp, unnatural. Their eyes didn’t see.
They were alive, but not alive.
> “They are yours now,” she said. “Children of shadow. A new pack for a new Alpha.”
I felt my throat tighten. “This isn’t what I wanted.”
> “You wanted power.”
“You wanted her.”
“You wanted control.”
Each sentence came like a knife to the chest.
> “And now,” she finished, “you have all three.”
I stumbled back, shaking my head, the air around me vibrating with her presence. Every heartbeat echoed louder in my ears. My mark, the one that once bound me to Scarlett, burned beneath my skin.
And for the briefest moment, I heard her voice again.
John… please… don’t let her take you.
The sound was faint, like an echo across time, but it cut through me with the force of a blade.
“Scarlett?” I whispered. “Where are you?”
The Goddess hissed, and suddenly, pain exploded in my chest. I dropped to my knees, gasping.
> “Forget her. The mortal love was your weakness. I will make you perfect.”
She poured into me then dark light flooded my veins, twisting through every thought, every breath. My body convulsed as my vision flickered between darkness and fire. The wolves around me bowed their heads, howling as if in worship.
Through the agony, I caught glimpses of Scarlett’s laughter, her soft hands brushing against mine, the way she used to whisper my name like a prayer. Each image burned away until only one thing remained: hunger.
When the pain finally stopped, I was standing again. My reflection stared back from a pool of dark water near my feet. My eyes once blue were now black with streaks of silver swirling at their center. My skin shimmered faintly, like shadow made flesh.
I was still John.
But something else looked through my face.
The Goddess’s presence pulsed inside my chest, faintly echoing my heartbeat. “Do you feel it now?” she asked. “The power to create. To command. To erase.”
And I did.
Every movement of my fingers sent ripples through the ground. The wolves bowed lower, waiting for a command I hadn’t given.
But beneath all that power, there was still a small, dying whisper.
Find her before I do.
Kael.
The name hit me like lightning.
I fell to one knee, clutching my head as Kael’s voice bled through the darkness. His tone was rough, fading in and out, but determined.
You can fight her, John. Don’t let her turn you into what she made me.
“I can’t,” I gasped.
You can. Because she still loves you. That’s your weapon.
> “Silence!” the Goddess screamed, her rage shaking through my bones. The ground cracked open, sending fissures of black fire spreading across the earth.
The undead wolves howled, their bodies dissolving into streams of smoke that circled me.
> “If you do not command, you will burn.”
And yet, through the chaos, Kael’s voice stayed. Weak, but unwavering.
Remember the night she touched your hand beneath the rain? Remember what you promised her? That you’d never let the darkness own you.
I pressed my palms to the ground, trembling. “I remember…”
And for the first time since awakening, I forced the Goddess’s power back. It was like trying to dam a flood with bare hands but for a heartbeat, the light dimmed.
The wolves froze.
The earth stopped shaking.
The air went still.
> “You dare defy me?”
Her fury rolled through the night like thunder. But I was already running with my legs moving before my mind could think, heading toward the last flicker of the bond. Toward Scarlett.
Every step tore at me, but I didn’t stop. The bond between us was faint, fragile but it was there. I could feel her heartbeat somewhere beyond the fog.
Behind me, the wolves roared as the Goddess shrieked, her voice echoing across the ruins.
> “You cannot escape what you’ve become!”
Maybe she was right.
Maybe it was already too late for redemption.
But as I ran through the blackened forest, Kael’s fading words stayed with me.
If you reach her before I vanish completely… she can still save us both.
I didn’t know if it was hope or madness driving me anymore.
All I knew was that I needed to see her one last time before the darkness swallowed what little of me was left.
And somewhere deep in the shadows, unseen by me, a new shape stirred.
Not a wolf. Not man. Something born of divine fury and fractured love rising from the ashes of my own sin.
