Chapter 46: Old Ox Eats Tender Grass
“I’m scared!”
Bianca’s face turned pale, her body trembling even more.
This time, it wasn’t an act.
She had heard the rumors—Daniel was bloodthirsty and ruthless. No one who crossed him ever had a good ending.
James saw Bianca was so frightened that her old illness seemed to be flaring up.
He didn’t dare to stay any longer and risk angering Daniel.
Seizing the opportunity, he said, “Daniel, I’m sorry, but it looks like Bianca’s old condition is acting up. I need to take her to see a doctor right away. We won’t bother you any longer. Please rest well.”
With that, he supported Bianca and hurried out of the room as if chased by a ghost.
Emily watched them leave in such a sorry state.
She couldn’t help but laugh heartily.
“Having fun?”
Daniel’s voice was low and casual.
He leaned back naturally, looking different from his usual meticulous suit-wearing self.
With those deep, soulful eyes, he was captivating without even realizing it.
Emily’s heart began to race.
She had almost forgotten Daniel was there in her moment of triumph.
Suppressing her emotions, Emily smiled, “Not particularly, Mr. Smith. I hope you didn’t mind the show.”
“It’s not a show! At your age, you should laugh freely and joyfully.”
Daniel spoke so naturally, as if discussing something as simple as eating or drinking.
Emily felt her eyes sting with tears.
He seemed to have noticed how exhausted and devoid of self she had become.
It was true in her past life.
In this life, because of the pain from her past, she no longer lived for others but still carried a heavy burden.
What did it mean to live freely?
She had never experienced it.
But his words reminded her.
If she was living for herself, she should live more freely.
In this life, she was only eighteen!
“Daniel, thank you!”
At this moment, she addressed Daniel as a friend who resonated with her.
She accompanied it with a genuine smile.
Daniel was taken aback.
Then he smiled slightly.
She was indeed an insightful girl who understood his words.
“You saved me again. Shouldn’t I be thanking you, Emily?”
He smiled and met Emily’s gaze.
They both couldn’t help but smile.
“Daniel, are you okay? I saw the news and was terrified. I rushed over…”
Charles hurried in, his voice preceding him.
“Fuck…”
He swallowed the curse under Daniel’s warning look.
Charles reacted this way because he saw Daniel smiling at a girl.
He wondered if he had walked into the wrong room.
After rubbing his eyes and confirming it was indeed Daniel, he almost cursed out loud.
He scrutinized Emily.
She was indeed quite pretty.
And she seemed even more attractive than the last time he saw her.
But she was so young!
“Hello, Ms. Johnson. How did you end up in the same car as Daniel? Does this count as sharing a hardship? Do you have any thoughts on this?”
Charles smiled, probing.
Emily frowned.
Did he think she was trying to seduce Daniel?
She suppressed her emotions and said calmly, “Mr. Green, you misunderstood. I happened to be with Mr. Smith because both our dogs were sick. We were planning to take them to the vet together.”
Charles was about to ask when Daniel got a dog.
Then he suddenly remembered.
So, Daniel used the dog to get closer to people.
Impressive!
He couldn’t help but blurt out, “Daniel, you just bought a dog. How did it get sick?”
“Bought?”
Emily looked at Daniel, puzzled.
She remembered Daniel had said the dog was a stray, looking pitiful.
Charles heard Emily’s puzzled question.
Feeling Daniel’s chilly gaze, he knew he must have said something wrong.
He quickly shut up.
Daniel’s fingers unconsciously rubbed together, but his face showed no sign of guilt as he explained, “I bought it. Originally, it was a stray. When I saw it being sold by a dog dealer, I felt sorry for it and asked my butler to buy it.”
Charles was speechless.
Since when did Daniel have such a soft heart?
He didn’t believe it.
But Emily did.
She nodded, “Mr. Smith is so kind-hearted.”
Charles almost burst out laughing.
Luckily, Emily’s phone rang.
It was Sofia calling.
Emily felt a bad premonition and quickly answered the call.
“Hello…”
There was no response from Sofia.
Instead, chaotic noises followed.
“Violette, bring the money here. What? Are you trying to run away and take my son and daughter with you?”
“I’m telling you, either you bring the money today, or I’ll take my son away.”
“Let go of my son, you bastard.”
“What? You’ve been out for a few days and already found someone else? Trying to abandon me?”
There were sounds of arguing.
It was Rhett and Violette’s voices.
Mixed with Atticus and Sofia trying to protect Violette.
Emily guessed Violette had called Atticus and Sofia over, but somehow Rhett had followed them and was now demanding money after seeing Violette living in a villa.
“Bitch, you found a man outside, and I didn’t care. But now you don’t listen when I ask for money? See if I don’t beat you to death!”
“Dad, let go of Mom…”
“Get out of the way. You dare block me? You bitch, and you useless son. This is the kind of children you raised. See if I don’t teach you all a lesson, so you know who’s in charge.”
Rhett’s voice was particularly arrogant.
Next, there was a scream from Sofia.
Then the call abruptly ended.
Emily’s face darkened.
“Is something wrong?” Daniel noticed Emily’s expression and asked in a deep voice.
Emily hid her emotions and said goodbye, “It’s nothing, just a small issue at home. You rest well. I need to go handle it.”
“Need help?”
Charles, reminded by Daniel’s gaze, stood up and asked with concern.
“No need!”
As Emily said this, she was already heading out the door.
Her figure soon disappeared.
She dialed the property management as she went downstairs.
“There’s a disturbance at my house. Please go and control the troublemaker. I’ll be back to handle it soon.”
The property management immediately agreed.
Emily was about to put her phone away.
Suddenly, a hand reached out and snatched her phone.
Emily frowned.
Instinctively, she reacted.
“…Ouch, ouch… Emily, let go of my hand…”
“Emily, what are you doing? Let go of Bianca!”
Emily hadn’t expected these two hadn’t left.
They were deliberately waiting for her.
Hearing James’s words, she didn’t immediately let go of Bianca.
Instead, she applied a bit of pressure, making Bianca cry from the pain, and slowly retrieved her phone from Bianca’s hand.
Then she pushed hard.
“Bianca, are you okay?”
Bianca stumbled, and James quickly supported her, asking with concern.
“James, I’m fine. I didn’t mean to grab Emily’s phone. I was just afraid she had a grudge against me and wouldn’t listen to me, so I thought of doing this.”
Bianca hurriedly explained.
Tears kept falling, making her cry uncontrollably.
She cried into James’s heart.
He glared coldly at Emily, “Apologize, or don’t blame me for being rude.”
