Chapter 308 Acting the Full Set, Being Threatened

Chapter 308 Acting the Full Set, Being Threatened

"Daniel, don't forget we're about to get engaged. How can you say things like that to another woman?"

Zoey seemed to catch the key words and suddenly snapped to attention.

Seeing the affectionate looks between the two, she felt provoked and couldn't help blurting it out.

Before Daniel could speak, Emily jumped in first. She leaned softly against Daniel and deliberately taunted, "Stop daydreaming. Can't you see Daniel and I are the couple here? We're in love with each other. If anyone's getting engaged, it's us. When is it your turn?"

Zoey stared at the two of them snuggling together, her eyes practically boring holes through them.

She glared angrily at Emily.

However, she still knew Emily wasn't the real target.

After all, in her view, with such a great catch like Daniel, a materialistic woman like Emily would naturally cling on and refuse to let go.

Everything depended on Daniel's wishes.

Having figured this out, Zoey quickly adjusted her attitude.

She stared intently at Daniel. "Daniel, you know I'm not joking. I'm not making this up out of thin air. Mr. Smith admitted it himself. Even if you don't care about your relationship with the King family, you can't really ignore Mr. Smith. You don't want something to happen to his health, do you?"

Daniel's brow furrowed, his sharp gaze fixed on Zoey. "What do you mean? Grandpa's health is fine. Stop talking nonsense, or are you saying you've done something to Grandpa?"

Zoey wanted Daniel to be worried, but she didn't want him to suspect her right away.

She immediately laughed lightly. "Daniel, what are you saying? Mr. Smith is going to be my grandfather. I wouldn't do anything to him no matter what I do to anyone else. You know Mr. Smith's health isn't good. He's already acknowledged our engagement. Soon our two families will sit down together to discuss the wedding. If you refuse now, Mr. Smith will probably get so upset he'll fall ill. His health is already poor and hard to treat. I've gone through so much trouble to find the best doctor in the country. You can't really disregard his health, can you?"

The implication was clear: I've found a good doctor, but if you don't cooperate, I won't provide treatment.

Wasn't this a threat?

This was exactly the kind of crazy thing Zoey would do.

However, Emily blinked at Daniel: Aren't I the best doctor?

Daniel silently responded to Emily: You are!

The two exchanged wordless glances.

In Zoey's eyes, it looked like they were gazing at each other affectionately.

Zoey dug her nails into her palms to keep herself from losing it on the spot.

Finally, she threw out one last line: "Daniel, I think you're a smart man. You should see clearly that whether in terms of connection or status, only I'm a perfect match for you. This engagement will ultimately be between us. I'll give you time to think, but not too long. Mr. Smith probably doesn't want to wait too long either. Oh, and your condition—perhaps the good doctor I found can treat you too!"

With that, she left gracefully under Daniel's "shocked" gaze.

Only after Zoey's figure had completely disappeared did Daniel snap out of his "shocked" expression.

Of course, this shock was all an act.

Emily hadn't expected Daniel to be such a good actor, showing no flaws whatsoever.

Zoey's information was a bit outdated—she didn't even know Daniel had obtained the antidote and had most likely been cured.

Probably, the person behind the scenes wasn't entirely certain.

Also, they might not have wanted to share this information with Zoey at all.

Emily's lips curved into a smile, but she held it back.

The two left and got in the car to head back to the hotel.

Kaia had wanted to come along too.

But Gilbert stopped her directly.

Kaia was about to be stubborn, but Gilbert's look scared her into submission.

"I haven't even settled accounts with you yet. If it weren't for you this time, Ms. Johnson wouldn't have gotten into trouble. And don't you know Ms. Johnson is injured and shouldn't be running around like this?"

Gilbert's cold words were like a bucket of ice water poured over Kaia's head.

"What? Emily's injured? I didn't notice at all. Where? Is it serious? I'm such an idiot for making her run around like this. Is her wound going to open up now? No, I need to go check on her even more."

Kaia kept saying "Emily" with genuine anxiety on her face—it didn't seem fake.

Gilbert was also anxious and had let something slip.

He didn't actually know more detailed information about Emily's injury, and he didn't want more people to know and dig deeper.

He quickly grabbed Kaia. "It's not that serious. And now, immediately, come back with me. What are you going there for? Can't you see the two of them need time together? Why would you be a third wheel? Or are you saying that after Daniel rejected you, you claim not to care but you're actually bitter and deliberately trying to sabotage them?"

"Thanks a lot. Is that really what you think of me? I'm genuinely worried about Emily. I now think Daniel is only barely good enough for Emily. Fine, I'll give him this chance to perform well in front of Emily. Let's go back!"

Gilbert didn't know how she'd become Emily's fan in just one day.

But since she was listening to reason and obediently going back with him instead of bothering Daniel and Emily, he breathed a sigh of relief and quickly led her away.

By now, Emily and Daniel had already gotten in the car.

Before getting in, the two maintained the kind of intimacy typical of couples.

Daniel's wrist, which she had held, still seemed to carry her fragrance and softness, making him wish the walk to the car could have been longer.

Daniel opened the car door for Emily first, waited for her to get in, then followed, hiding his sense of loss.

Emily spoke up. "Judging by how much we've provoked Zoey, she probably won't be able to hold back much longer before taking action again. You'd better call Grandpa ahead of time to warn him, in case she does something desperate."

"Don't worry about that. I'll have York arrange for people to secretly protect him. We won't give them another chance to make a move."

"From what Zoey said, it's clear your poisoning has nothing to do with her. Otherwise, she wouldn't be unaware that you might have gotten the antidote. The person behind the scenes is obviously being somewhat cautious with her, which means their power is stronger than the King family's, but probably only by a bit. They have some schemes, but they're not invincible!"

This information was very important.

It also meant that Daniel's Smith Group, plus her help behind the scenes, would be enough to stand against them.

Emily kept talking about her concern for his affairs, which made Daniel prone to reading too much into it, foolishly thinking that Emily had actually fallen for him but just didn't realize it yet.

"Thank you for your concern. You've worked hard!"

Daniel's voice was deep and magnetic. As he spoke, his deep eyes became especially profound, like a huge whirlpool trying to pull Emily in completely.

The previously serious atmosphere suddenly became intimate.

Emily felt his intense gaze. Her heart raced. She clenched her hands, trying to suppress her rapidly beating heart.

She looked away, too embarrassed to meet his eyes.

So Emily tried to change the subject. "That project with Wayne—had you been eyeing it for a while?"

Daniel noticed Emily's embarrassment, and his aggressive gaze softened a bit.

Now that Emily brought up business, he reined in all his emotions and answered properly, "Yes. When I came to Emerald City this time, I was planning to meet with Wayne for detailed discussions if I had the chance."
