Chapter 237: Am I a Cheap Person?
"Daniel, if you ask me, we should keep playing along with this scheme. I can't let myself suffer for nothing. I also want to see what exactly Zoey is trying to do - whether the family put her up to this, whether it's her own decision, or if there's someone behind her."
Mason stole a few cautious glances at Daniel before voicing his thoughts.
Daniel's lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn't agree right away.
This time Mason wasn't in a hurry either, waiting for his answer.
After a moment, after turning something over in his mind, Daniel finally spoke again, "There's no rush to decide. Your health comes first. I'll have Emily come check on your condition later, then we'll decide."
"Who are you letting decide? You're not planning to let Emily decide, are you? You call yourself a man, yet you let a woman make decisions for you, and decisions about me, your elder!"
Although Mason had compromised, thinking about Emily's attitude during their two meetings - so arrogant - he couldn't help but feel angry.
Daniel looked at Mason with a deep gaze, a mocking smile playing at the corner of his lips. "Is that so? How come I remember when Grandma was alive, you seemed to have knelt before her!"
"What nonsense are you talking about, you..."
Mason was shocked. How did Daniel know about that?
Back then, Daniel was only three or four years old.
Daniel looked at Mason with a half-smile. "I guess I have a good memory. I remember things from when I was three or four."
Mason felt guilty and had no way out. Finally, he waved his hand helplessly. "Fine, fine, fine. We'll do everything your way. After all, you're the one in charge of this family now. I'm old, my words don't carry weight anymore."
Daniel pretended not to hear Mason's words. After giving Zach a few instructions about watching Mason's health, he left.
After returning, his car stopped downstairs from Emily's place.
Daniel stood beside the car.
Under the dim yellow light, his sculpted features became even more defined.
He leaned lightly against the car, looking up at the second-floor study.
The light was still on.
Emily probably hadn't gone to bed yet.
Daniel thought for a moment and called Emily.
Emily had almost finished her work and was about to turn off the light and go back to her room to rest when her phone suddenly vibrated. Seeing the caller ID, she quickly answered.
"Daniel, is something wrong?"
At this hour, given his routine, he should be resting.
Don't ask how she knew roughly when he rested - she didn't have a voyeuristic habit. You can actually tell these things from taking someone's pulse.
"I don't know if it's convenient right now, but I have something I'd like to ask you in person," Daniel said respectfully.
As if sensing something.
Emily got up and walked to the window. Pulling back the curtain, she saw the car parked downstairs and Daniel leaning against it, looking casual yet elegant.
"It's convenient. Come on in!"
Emily hung up and operated her phone.
The smart door opened.
Emily also went downstairs and led Daniel through the front door.
She politely invited him to sit down and was about to pour Daniel some water.
"No need to trouble yourself. I have something I need to ask you." Seeing Emily about to get busy, Daniel quickly stopped her and spoke.
Seeing Daniel's serious expression, Emily figured it must be something important, so she didn't stand on ceremony and sat down beside him.
Daniel then explained Mason's situation.
"I'd like to ask you to find a chance to check on Grandpa's health. He took the antidote pill after being poisoned. Today I saw he looked weak, and I'm not sure if the poison affected his body."
Emily hadn't expected Zoey to be so bold as to directly poison Mason.
"This isn't any trouble. Tomorrow after my competition, I'll go straight to the Smith Villa to examine Mr. Smith. However, Mr. Smith is getting on in years. Even though I gave him the antidote pill, we can't have this kind of testing poison with his own body happening again. I'm afraid if someone has murderous intent, the poison might be too strong, and taking the antidote pill might be too late."
Emily gave a couple of extra reminders.
Daniel nodded, also disapproving of Mason's actions. "There won't be a next time."
"Good. Has Zoey already started making demands?"
Emily was just curious and gossiping, asking casually.
Daniel answered casually, "Nothing more than the project and the engagement!"
Mentioning the engagement.
Emily gave him an extra look.
Daniel immediately realized and declared his loyalty, "But don't worry, there's no way I'm getting engaged. I won't get engaged to any other woman."
His eyes were bright and determined.
If Emily didn't believe him, he'd probably start making vows to prove his loyalty the next moment.
Acting as if Emily was already his girlfriend.
Emily felt something strange stir in her heart.
A man who understands boundaries is a huge plus for any girl with him.
How could Emily not be moved, especially with James as a comparison.
It's just that they weren't together yet. Emily's face turned slightly red, feeling a bit awkward and embarrassed. She looked away and changed the subject, "Then I'm afraid Mr. Smith's suffering was really for nothing. Weren't you trying to find out who's behind Zoey? From what I can see of her intelligence, someone must be pulling her strings."
The atmosphere had been quite good just now.
Actually, he could sense that Emily wasn't without feelings for him.
But the timing was still a bit off. Daniel felt slightly disappointed.
But he quickly collected himself, neither anxious nor impatient, and replied, "It's not entirely for nothing - at least it taught Grandpa a lesson. As for Zoey, finding out her purpose and who's behind her will just take a bit more effort. If I want to investigate, I'll naturally find out."
His eyes were deep and profound.
Confidence radiated from him naturally.
As if his entire being was coated in a layer of light.
Emily naturally believed he could find out, but she actually hoped things would go smoothly for him. So the best method was actually to continue playing along.
She thought for a moment and suggested, "Actually, playing along isn't impossible. If she wants an engagement, let there be an engagement!"
"You really want me to get engaged to Zoey? Am I that cheap?"
Someone with Zoey's character - he didn't think much of her at all.
Daniel's words came out a bit harsh, even faintly carrying that sense of being wronged and unreasonable.
Emily also felt that with Zoey's vicious scheming, she was indeed cheap and not worthy of Daniel - it wasn't that Daniel was cheap.
She knew he had misunderstood and quickly explained, "An engagement is fine, but who says it has to be you in person?"
Emily's words carried a deeper meaning.
Daniel also caught the implication.
His expression softened slightly, and he realized his reaction had been a bit extreme.
The truth was, he liked her, and when the person you love might push you toward another woman, anyone would be unhappy.
Especially someone as proud as Daniel.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel's gaze reflected Emily's image deeply as he spoke.
