Chapter 258

Chapter 258
The call came in the evening.

Serena was reviewing documents in her study, glasses perched low on her nose, the city lights reflecting softly against the window behind her. Lucien was nearby, speaking quietly on his phone, when her screen lit up.

Unknown Number State Correctional Facility

She stared at it for a long moment.

Lucien noticed. “You don’t have to answer.”

“I know,” she said.

Her thumb hovered… then pressed accept.

The line crackled.

“…Serena?”

Ethan’s voice was hoarse. Broken in a way she’d never heard before.

“It’s me,” he said quickly, as if afraid she’d hang up. “They... they just told me. I’m not getting out. Not ever. Life, Serena. I’m..”

He choked.

“I’m so sorry.”

She didn’t respond.

He rushed on, panic spilling through the receiver. “I messed up. I know that now. I swear I didn’t mean for things to go that far. Lila.. she kept pushing, she tempted me, she...”

Serena closed her eyes.

Still blaming someone else.

“I loved you,” Ethan said desperately. “I always did. Everything I did, I did because I was confused. Because I was weak. If I could go back...”

“Ethan,” Serena interrupted calmly.

Her voice stopped him instantly.

“I didn’t answer this call to listen to excuses.”

Silence.

Then, quieter, “I just want your forgiveness.”

Serena leaned back in her chair, gaze drifting to the reflection in the glass. She looked composed. Untouched.

“I forgave you a long time ago,” she said. “The first time you hurt me and I survived.”

His breath hitched. “Then.. then why does this feel like punishment?”

“Because forgiveness isn’t reconciliation,” Serena replied evenly. “And it doesn’t erase consequences.”

He swallowed hard. “I loved you.”

She nodded once, though he couldn’t see it. “I know. But love that destroys isn’t love. It’s possession.”

Her tone softened, not with pity, but clarity.

“I don’t hate you, Ethan. I just don’t care anymore.”

That broke him.

“Serena, please...”

“This is the last time we’ll speak,” she said gently. “You don’t get to follow me into the life I rebuilt without you.”

A pause.

Then, quietly, “Take responsibility. That’s the only thing left you can do.”

She ended the call.

The line went dead.

Lucien approached silently and rested a hand on her shoulder.

“You okay?” he asked.

Serena nodded.

“Yes,” she said simply.

She stood, walked to the window, and watched the city continue on, unbothered, alive, moving forward.

Somewhere behind concrete walls and locked doors, Ethan Zhao finally understood the truth.

Losing Serena wasn’t his punishment.

Being unable to reach her anymore was.

And Serena Lin?

She never looked back again.

.....................

Arabelle Weng knew it the moment she saw the news..

Not when the Weng Group shares hit rock bottom.

Not when her father’s name was dragged through every broadcast like a public execution.

.Not even when Ethan Zhao’s arrest became a spectacle that devoured the city.

It was the pattern.

The precision.

One betrayal erased.

Then another.

Each piece of Serena’s past severed cleanly, surgically, without chaos, only inevitability.

Lucien Feng wasn’t reacting anymore.

He was concluding.

Her fingers trembled as she shut off the screen.

Han hadn’t answered her last three calls.

That alone told her everything.

“He wouldn’t dare,” she whispered to herself, pacing the dim apartment. “He wouldn’t...”

The lie tasted bitter.

Han had always survived by choosing the winning side.

And Lucien Feng had never lost.

Arabelle grabbed her coat, shoving documents, cash, and jewelry into a bag with frantic hands. Her mind raced, spiraling through options that collapsed the moment she touched them.

Another city? Locked down.

Another country? Borders flagged.

Another ally? Either silent, or already dead to her.

She ran.

Down stairwells.

Through back alleys.

Into a private residence she barely remembered acquiring, an old safehouse she’d never even used.

For the first time in her life, she arrived somewhere without confidence.

Only fear.

She locked the door behind her, back pressed against it, chest heaving. The silence inside the apartment was suffocating. No guards. No staff. No sense of control.

Her phone buzzed.

A single message.

Han: I’m sorry.

Her blood turned to ice.

The door clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Unlocked.

Footsteps followed.

Measured. Unhurried. Certain.

Arabelle spun around just as the lights came on.

Lucien Feng walked in first.

He didn’t look angry.

That was the worst part.

He surveyed the space like it belonged to him, like it always had. His men spread out silently, sealing exits, checking corners, weapons lowered but ready.

Lucien removed his gloves slowly and handed them to one of his men.

Then he sat down.

Right in the center of the room.

Relaxed.

Possessive.

As if he owned the air Arabelle was breathing.

“You chose poorly,” he said calmly.

Her legs felt weak.

“H.. Han?” she croaked, eyes darting wildly.

Lucien’s lips curved faintly.

“Oh,” he said. “He did exactly what I asked.”

Her breath shattered.

“What… what do you mean?”

Lucien crossed one leg over the other. “I needed you to feel safe again. To believe you still had a shield.”

Arabelle’s mind reeled.

“He needed money,” Lucien continued evenly. “Protection. Time. I offered all three.”

Her vision blurred.

“So every message… every delay…”

Lucien nodded once. “All mine.”

Something inside her collapsed.

She staggered forward, then dropped, hard, to her knees.

The sound echoed painfully in the room.

“I did it for love,” Arabelle sobbed suddenly, hands clutching at the floor. “Everything, I did it for love!”

Lucien didn’t move.

“I loved you,” she cried, looking up at him, tears streaking her face. “I loved you since we were young. Since before Serena existed. I couldn’t stand watching you choose her, watching her take everything...”

Her voice broke into something ugly and desperate.

“I just wanted you to look at me again.”

Lucien’s gaze was cold.

“You threatened my wife’s mother.”

The words fell like a verdict.

Arabelle froze.

“That,” Lucien said quietly, “is where love ends.”

He leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on his knees.

“I let you run,” he continued. “I let you hope. I let you believe you were clever enough to escape.”

Her shoulders shook violently.

“Because mercy given too early feels like injustice,” he said. “And I wanted you to understand what fear truly is, before I show you what comes after.”

She crawled closer, hands trembling, forehead nearly touching the floor.

“Please,” she whispered. “I’ll disappear. I’ll confess. I’ll do anything.”

Lucien stood.

The room seemed to shrink.

“You already did everything,” he said calmly. “And now it’s my turn.”

He turned to his men.

“Take her.”

As they moved forward, Arabelle screamed, not in anger, not in pride... But in the raw terror of someone who finally understood the truth.

She had never been Serena’s rival.

She had only been Lucien’s patience.

And it had just run out.
