Chapter 410
Chapter 410
Thinking about the past made Emily's chest ache fiercely.
Robert, completely oblivious to Emily's ashen expression, assumed her silence meant she was reminiscing about their once-loving days together.
Seeing what he thought was a glimmer of hope, Robert threw himself at Emily's legs. "Emily, as long as you can get Alice to leave me alone, I'll do whatever you say for the rest of my life! I can't take it anymore—I'm sick of living like a homeless man! Just get Alice off my back, and I'll bring James home right away. I'll quit the company. I'll be your servant—your slave—whatever you want!"
"I just want to survive! Emily, for the sake of what we once had, please make her stop. Please?"
Emily didn't hear a single word. Her purpose in coming here today was crystal clear: divorce. Now.
Her face remained expressionless. "No."
"You're coming with me to file for divorce. Right now."
Robert released her legs. He lifted his head, his face rigid as he stared at her. "Emily, you really don't care at all about what we had?"
The words sounded absurd coming from his mouth. What did they have left between them?
"Robert, don't make me sick with that kind of talk." Emily turned her face away.
Robert lowered his head. His last shred of hope shattered.
Suddenly, he lunged up and grabbed Emily in a crushing embrace. The unexpected move made her jump, and she began struggling frantically.
"Let go! What are you doing?"
"I've had enough!" Robert held on tight. Alice's death threats on one side, Sophia swindling him out of fifty million on the other, and Ava—once loyal—now turning against him because he couldn't spare the energy to deal with Alex. Behind him, there was absolutely no one left.
And now Emily had to show up and talk about divorce, rubbing salt in the wound.
He was done. If he was going to die anyway, he might as well take someone with him. Emily hated him, despised him? Fine. He'd drag her to hell with him. Even as a ghost, he'd haunt her forever.
Robert tightened his grip to prevent her escape, then seized her wrist and yanked her toward the door.
He was going to take her to the roof and jump.
He didn't have the guts to die alone, but with Emily? That was different. Push him far enough, and he'd send Emily to hell first—entirely possible.
At this point, he'd already burned bridges with Alice anyway.
Even if holding James hostage bought him temporary safety, there'd be no good days ahead.
Rather than living every day in this agonizing anxiety, he'd rather be dead.
But he didn't want to die alone. And Emily had conveniently shown up...
Emily, already feeling unwell, had no strength to break free from Robert's grip.
He dragged her forcibly. "Let go of me! Let go! Where are you taking me?"
Robert gave a cold laugh. "Didn't you want a divorce? Come on, let's go get divorced!"
Emily sensed something off in Robert's reaction. He couldn't possibly be this compliant. She suddenly snapped to clarity, realizing how dangerous it had been to come find Robert alone.
She struggled harder. "Let go! I can walk myself!"
Robert ignored her.
But when he opened the office door—
Sawyer stood right outside.
Robert stumbled back a step as if he'd seen a ghost.
Sawyer's gaze locked onto Robert's hand gripping Emily's arm. "Let her go!"
Robert reluctantly released her.
Sawyer immediately pulled Emily behind him protectively, glaring daggers at Robert. Robert shifted uncomfortably. "Sawyer, what's with the look? Like you want to tear me apart? She's fine, isn't she?"
From the way Robert had been dragging Emily, Sawyer could tell he'd been up to no good.
He silently thanked himself for getting here so quickly, for preventing Emily from being hurt. Still, fear crept through him—fear that if he'd arrived one moment later, he might have found Emily's body instead. He'd never forgive himself.
Even confirming Emily was safe, Sawyer wasn't about to let Robert off easy. He clenched his fist and raised his hand to slap him.
But the moment his hand went up, Robert issued a warning: "Think carefully. If you dare hit me, James gets hit too!"
Emily's pupils contracted.
She couldn't bear the thought of her child suffering even the slightest harm. Sawyer naturally caught her reaction. Though Emily said nothing, he understood perfectly.
Reluctantly, Sawyer lowered his fist.
No rush...
Once Alice found James and rescued him, he'd settle the score with Robert then.
Seeing Sawyer lower his fist, Robert smirked smugly. "Sawyer, you look like you're dying to beat me to death. Go ahead, try it! Come on, hit me!"
"I know you all hate my guts. So what? Can you lay a finger on me now? Ha ha ha!"
"Emily, I know you absolutely despise me. Otherwise you wouldn't suddenly show up demanding a divorce. Even if you want to distance yourself from me now, you can't deny that twenty-some years ago when you married me, you truly loved me!"
"If I disgust you, then you're disgusting your own self from twenty years ago! You loved me deeply back then. You even said you'd be with me for life!"
Robert deliberately twisted the knife. "Have you forgotten those vows? Let me refresh your memory—remind you how loving we used to be! You definitely loved me. Otherwise, how could we have had two children together? Right?"
Listening to Robert's words, Emily's complexion visibly deteriorated. That nauseous feeling surged up her throat again. She couldn't control the dry heaving. She couldn't speak a single word.
Robert laughed at the sight. "So you really are that disgusted by me, huh? So disgusted that just hearing a few truths makes you want to puke?"
"Why don't you think about how we used to sleep together? Don't just be disgusted by me—be disgusted by yourself too!" Robert was on a roll now.
"Shut your mouth!"
Sawyer's patience snapped. He raised his hand and clamped it over Robert's mouth, pressing so hard it seemed like he wanted to tear it apart.
Robert's features contorted in pain.
He managed to mumble incoherently, "James... James..."
In this state, he couldn't form complete sentences—only repeat James's name as a warning for Sawyer to back off.
