Chapter 406
Chapter 406
"Got it. Going to sleep." Beck responded carelessly and immediately flopped down to sleep.
Sophia, "……"
Sophia had no choice but to swallow her frustration and close her eyes, but she was too irritated to actually fall asleep. She just lay there until morning.
……
The next day at noon, Robert contacted Sophia right on schedule.
At Sophia's request, Robert sent her the contact information for the driver he'd found.
An hour later, Sophia contacted Robert again, arranging to meet at three o'clock at a café near the Baker Group.
At the appointed time, both arrived at the café.
Robert ingratiatingly pushed a coffee he'd ordered in advance toward Sophia.
"Sophia, it's getting cold out lately—make sure you stay warm. You look a little underdressed. Here, have some hot coffee to warm up."
Sophia glanced at Robert's fawning expression and let out a cold laugh, then slowly picked up the hot coffee and took a sip.
Now even this adopted daughter could act so superior in front of him. How had he fallen this far?
Robert lowered his eyes in unwilling resignation, sighing inwardly.
Seeing Robert lost in thought, Sophia tapped the table, pulling his attention back. Robert realized his smile had slipped and quickly forced his lips back into a grin. "Sophia, so what did you want to talk about? Oh, and why did you have me find a poor person with a criminal record who can drive? What are you planning?"
Sophia was the one who'd called this meeting, yet he had to be the one to ask what it was about. Ever since she married Beck, she'd grown increasingly dismissive of him. Robert felt a surge of anger. If they weren't in the same boat right now, he'd love nothing more than for Alice to deal with Sophia first thing.
Sophia spoke without urgency. "Ash's entire family died in a car accident."
Robert was about to take a sip of coffee, but when he heard Sophia deliver such horrifying news in the calmest tone imaginable, he couldn't hold onto his cup. His hand trembled, the cup clattered onto the table, coffee spilling everywhere—some even splashing onto Sophia's clothes.
Sophia shot up from her seat in alarm, pointing at Robert furiously. "Do you have Parkinson's? Can't even hold a coffee cup?"
She angrily grabbed several napkins and started wiping her clothes.
The noise of the cup hitting the table was loud enough to draw curious looks from nearby customers and catch a staff member's attention. The employee hurried over to help, only to get snapped at by Robert. "Get lost. This doesn't concern you. Beat it."
The employee, "……"
The employee had no choice but to walk away.
Robert looked around nervously, terrified someone had overheard their conversation.
Fortunately, there weren't many customers in the café at the moment, and they were all seated far apart. No one could have heard them. Robert swallowed hard. "What did you just say? Their whole family is dead?"
"They died in a car accident? Are you joking? Sophia, this isn't funny at all! What grudge did you have against them that you had to wipe them out completely?"
Robert couldn't understand why Sophia would do something so insane. It wasn't that he felt sympathy for that family, but those were three human lives!
And he had a reasonable suspicion that the only reason Sophia could remain so calm after killing three people was because she'd already planned to make him take the fall.
That's why she'd had him find a driver with a shady background.
Some 'accident.' It was deliberate!
Robert waited anxiously for Sophia's explanation, and the more anxious he looked, the more deliberately Sophia dragged it out. "Robert, do you not understand plain English? I already told you—they died in an accidental car crash. What do you mean I 'wiped them out'? I had no quarrel with them. Why would I kill them?"
"I said it was an accident, so it was an accident."
Sophia's expression turned cold. "Here's what happened. That family of three was stuck in a windowless basement all day, getting incredibly bored. They found it too stuffy and really wanted to get out for some fresh air."
"I simply fulfilled their request and had you arrange a driver to take them out for a drive. Who knew the driver would be drunk? The car flipped, all three of them died inside, and the driver's critically injured in the hospital. You could say that driver really harmed people."
"The police are waiting for the unconscious driver to wake up so they can investigate."
Sophia finished her summary. "Got it now?"
Robert wasn't stupid. He knew these were just talking points Sophia had fabricated, not only to completely exonerate herself but also to hold over him the fact that he'd found the driver—clearly intending to pin those three deaths on him.
That family had probably been tortured to death, and Sophia had come up with this scheme to fake a car accident.
He could see through Sophia's little scheme. He just couldn't understand why she'd want them dead when they had no grudge against her!
Three lives. A full three lives!
If Sophia really pinned all three deaths on him, he'd definitely get the death penalty!
Robert was on the verge of breaking down. He'd never imagined that just when he'd managed to temporarily escape Alice's reckoning, Sophia would stab him in the back!
If he weren't certain that Sophia hated Alice even more, he'd suspect the two of them had secretly joined forces to take him down together!
Robert grabbed a napkin and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. He responded to Sophia, "I understand. So, Sophia, what do you plan to do next? You're not..."
His expression stiffened. "You're not planning to send me to prison, are you? That driver was found by me, yes, but I had no idea what you were going to have him do! I'm not trying to shirk responsibility—I'm just asking if you could, considering I raised you for over ten years, please not send me to prison. I'm begging you!"
If this weren't a café near the Baker Group, Robert would have thrown himself on his knees to beg Sophia for mercy.
Watching Robert like this, Sophia wanted to laugh. She couldn't help letting out a soft chuckle.
At a time like this, she still had the mood to laugh?
Robert ground his back teeth.
Of course Sophia could laugh—she had him to take the fall for her.
The thought made Robert's chest feel tight with rage. He wanted nothing more than to strangle the smirking, gloating Sophia sitting across from him.
"I didn't say I was sending you to prison. I already told you—it was the driver's drunk driving. It's entirely the driver's fault. It's just that..."
Sophia deliberately paused, wanting to see Robert's anxious reaction.
