Chapter 290 Dawn Project
Chapter 291 Public Prescription
When Nicholas finished speaking, the whole venue erupted.
Treatment costs for neurological diseases are a huge expense. Each medication is expensive, requires long-term use, and needs to be combined with other treatments.
Ten thousand patients might not sound like many, but for any company, the treatment costs would be a significant figure.
Nicholas had always been seen as a ruthless character, and few had heard of him doing any charity work.
Even the last time Nicholas was revealed to have donated to an orphanage, it seemed to be a joint donation with Diana.
When he said these words, everyone's perception of him changed considerably.
"Mr. Spencer, can you tell us about the progress of the new drug development? When will it hit the market?"
"What are the selection criteria for free treatment? Can patients from both domestic and abroad apply?"
"Is the drug safe? Has it entered clinical trials yet?"
Reporters fired question after question. Nicholas remained expressionless while Diana answered calmly.
She hadn't known much about this before, but after several days of study and research, she could now answer reporters' questions as a manager.
Bruce stood behind Nicholas and Diana, nodding with satisfaction.
Bruce had prepared backup measures in case Diana couldn't answer, ready to step in immediately.
But it seemed his help wasn't needed now.
Half an hour later, after all the reporters' questions were answered, Diana shifted the conversation, her eyes showing determination. "Everyone, I have one more thing to announce."
"Foreign countries developed drugs to treat this disease years ago, but they're expensive and not everyone can get them. Back then, to save my grandmother's life, I was extremely distressed too."
Diana secretly held Nicholas's hand. Her palm was sweating and her fingertips were cold, but her voice was firm.
"To prevent other patients from going through what I did, and to break the monopoly of foreign companies, I've decided that once the new drug is successfully developed, we'll share the formula. The Windsor Corporation will be responsible for cultivating the core herbal ingredients, and after meeting daily pharmaceutical needs, the remaining herbs will be sold to other pharmaceutical companies at cost price."
Dawnveil Clover was indeed rare, but if it could be cultivated in large quantities, developing new drugs wouldn't be difficult anymore.
Diana had experienced being unable to get medication in her previous life. Without Nicholas, she would never have had access to imported drugs to keep Thalia alive.
Now that Diana had the opportunity and ability, she was more willing to give back.
She placed her left hand over her chest where the sapphire pendant was slightly warm. She thought perhaps the kind witch would approve of her decision too.
Sensing her emotional fluctuation, Nicholas squeezed her hand back. "The Spencer Corporation will fully support Ms. Windsor's decision. We believe that only through open cooperation can we rapidly advance medical technology."
This press conference was quite successful.
Thalia waking from her coma not only dispelled the rumors but also proved Diana's acupuncture abilities, making Diana truly worthy of being the York Family head.
And Diana's announcement of the Dawn Project gave many patients hope of survival.
Many pharmaceutical companies, learning she was willing to share the formula and raw materials, frantically started contacting the Windsor Corporation and the Spencer Corporation, afraid of missing out on this multi-million dollar collaboration project.
From the moment Bruce got in the car, his phone kept ringing.
To avoid affecting his driving, he had to turn off his phone.
As the car started, he let out a breath. "Ms. Windsor, why didn't you mention sharing the formula beforehand? Now everyone's asking me when we can cooperate. My phone has never been this busy."
Their original plan was just to have Thalia appear to dispel the rumors, then announce the Dawn Project to build momentum for the Spencer Corporation and restore the Windsor Corporation's stock price.
But Diana's impromptu addition of sharing the formula really caught everyone off guard.
Diana said apologetically, "Sorry, I didn't plan to originally. I've caused you trouble."
"Why?" Nicholas took out a tissue to wipe her palm. "What did Clio find out?"
He saw Diana check her phone first before making the decision.
Only Clio would message Diana at this time, no one else.
Diana handed over her phone. "That foreign reporter today works for Steve. He's not a real reporter at all, and Steve also posted bail for Maeve and the others."
"He doesn't have that kind of capability." Nicholas looked at the content on the phone, pausing when he reached the end. "Horizon Healthcare? Does Brice work there?"
Horizon Healthcare was the foreign medical institution that provided Thalia's life-saving medication.
Their special drugs were only available to specific people. Without Nicholas's connections to important people overseas, even with all his money, he couldn't have gotten them.
And Brice was a senior research staff member at Horizon Healthcare, considered one of the most capable among the younger generation of the York Family.
"Steve's mother has a similar condition to my grandmother and has been using this medication for years. I suspect his island acquisition is just a front - Horizon Healthcare wants to acquire the island." Diana's expression grew serious.
Her phone suddenly rang. Seeing it was Ethan calling, Nicholas pressed speakerphone directly. "What is it?"
"Nicholas? Hello, aren't you being a bit much right now? You're even controlling Ms. Windsor's calls?" Ethan said, somewhat annoyed.
"If there's nothing, I'm hanging up." Nicholas said coldly.
"Wait, I have something important! Is Ms. Windsor there with you?" Ethan said urgently.
Diana pushed Nicholas. "Dr. Martinez, I'm here. What's up?"
"We kept blood samples from all the children rescued from the cruise ship. Today I reviewed the test reports again, and guess what I found?"
"Get to the point." Nicholas was losing patience.
Diana glared at him before picking up the phone. "What did you find?"
"Several children's blood contains components of the special drug used to treat your grandmother. Normally, they shouldn't be using this kind of medication since their hearts and nervous systems are fine, but there are drug residues in their bodies." Ethan seemed to be reviewing medical records, his voice pausing briefly. "Only four children under ten have small amounts of residue. I think something's wrong."
"Okay, I'll be at the hospital right away. Wait for me." Diana hung up, her expression turning grim. "Bruce, to the hospital."
She understood what Ethan meant. Drug residues in the children's bodies meant either they were being used for drug testing, or their bodies were being used to absorb the medication, then their blood was transfused to seriously ill patients.
Doyle's death-like face appeared in her mind again. Diana clenched her fists. "Damn it, I should have thought of this earlier!"
