Chapter 63
Ruby
He backed away from Phoenix scorched. There was no permanent damage but enough to give him the message. The ground began to shake and I knew it was because of Jade as she ran to him. I was grateful for what she had done but I was still pissed about the way she had gone about it. If they had continued to attack Phoenix I don't know what I would have done. To my relief he was okay. His breathing was heavy, he was bruised, but alive. I licked his wounds helping him to heal faster. He was mine. From this point forward I would treat him as such. I almost lost him and that was a wake up call. He gave a look of relief and I could tell that he was grateful that I was there. This had turned out to be worse than even he had anticipated. I couldn't even tell who was winning. All that could be seen was chaos. Phoenix got to his feet and let out a howl. He ran and I followed as did other members of his pack. The message was clear. Too many had died and it was time for the battle to end. We were headed back to the pack house. This had been one hell of a day. I for one was glad that it was about to come to an end. Just when I thought things were over I heard heavy footsteps behind me. The pounding got faster and faster until I felt a strong gust of wind past almost causing me to lose my balance. It was Hunter. I couldn't believe it. He was heading for Phoenix again. Jade was right. He was relentless. He tackled Phoenix to the ground. They began growling and snarling at one another before attacking. I willed my flames to return but I was weak. I had used most of my energy on the last attack and didn't have much more in me. Not to mention I still had no idea how to control them. I charged at Hunter. It was the only way. Just as I was getting close, preparing to attack heavy winds began to swirl. Both Hunter and Phoenix were picked up in what looked like some sort of tornado. Water joined the wind as it became some sort of storm. Then all of a sudden it stopped as they crashed to ground flying in separate directions. I wasn't a hundred percent sure but I suspected it was the work of Sapphire and possibly Crystal. I chased after Phoenix once again praying that he was okay. When I got to him he was unconscious. It wasn't long before another wolf joined me. I growled thinking he was about to try and hurt my mate. He was defenseless in this state. He bowed and I knew he had to be a part of Phoenix's pack. From the power he radiated he must have been the beta. He got closer as if asking for permission which I granted. He lifted Phoenix onto his back and ran to what I assumed was the pack doctor. The room was white, almost like the lab. A beautiful woman came out wearing a lab coat.
"Here you are luna," she said, handing me some clothes. I shifted and dressed quickly.
"Is he going to be okay?" I asked nervously.
"Yes. It will just take some time for him to recover as his wolf heals," she replied.
"When will he wake?"
"Could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It depends on him."
I sat in the chair by his bedside. I knew all of this would end badly. All of us are being sucked into this mess because of who we are mated to. I would never turn my back on my sisters or betray them, but or mates it seemed would always hate each other. Diego and Hunter both had it out for Phoenix and it didn't look like it would end until one or all of them were dead. Why did things have to be this way. What was the Moon Goddess thinking when she paired us with them. How could we stop war and destruction in the were world if we couldn't even stop our mates from fighting?
"Can I come in?" I turned and saw Jade. She looked hesitant and nervous. Two things she never was.
"Sure." I was upset with her but I understood.
" Look I'm sorry. I had to do something."
" I know. I just wish you had thought of something else."
"What are we going to do?" I knew she was thinking the same thing I had been.
"I don't know. I don't see them being friends or coming to an agreement any time soon. This is all so messed up."
"I know. They both are fighting for their lives and yet I know that when they wake up we'll end up back where we started." She was right. This was far from over.
" Is Hunter okay?"
"He'll live. I love him. I just wish he would let this go. He has everything he needs yet he is determined to have more. I understand his reasoning but he doesn't need this pack."
" If what he says is true it belongs to him. I know Phoenix will never give it up. He also has made so many enemies that even if he did someone would always be after him." It was true. My mate was an ass and had done everything he would to take from people and gain power. There were many who hated him.
"What happens now? We don't even know who won. Where does this leave us?"
"With countless dead bodies and two injured alphas. All for nothing. There was no victory tonight. What's worse is that each of them will have to explain to pack members that they accomplished nothing. As for us, like you said back where we started. Trying to convince two stubborn alphas to see reason. I don't know if I have it in me to try when I know it'll be pointless."
"We can't give up."
"One of them is going to end up dead if this continues. I don't know what else we can do. We've tried everything."
"Not everything," Jewels came in and I was happy to see her. I ran and hugged.
"Thank goodness you're here."
"I'm glad to see you guys too. I have some news. As you probably figured out it was Sapphire and Crystal who put your mates in this position and ended the fight. Obviously there were many members watching in shock. One of those members has a cousin. They told this cousin what they witnessed. This caught their interest of course."
"So what?" I asked confused.
"Well this cousin has some pretty high up connections. This was a battle over land. There was no winner. In cases like these there is a procedure that can be followed to prevent another war. If both parties agree there can be trial. Even if they do not agree, if enough members are on board it can still happen. From what I hear these pack members are not willing to engage in another battle. They felt blindsided and with no clear winner they feel they have lost too much already. The beta has had them all to sign a petition since he knows Phoenix is not going to stop on his own. He understands that Phoenix will probably kill him but he thinks it's worth the risk. The rogues who came with Hunter feel the same way."
"So what does all this mean?"
"The leader of the werewolf council is one his way here."
