Chapter 36 Chapter 0036

“Leave her, Amari.” Rafael stepped closer, and I felt a sense of relief washing over me.
Amari would’ve slapped and beaten me up if he hadn’t shown up.
“What do you mean I should leave her, babe?” She snarled. “Did you hear the things she said to me? She insulted me, and I won’t take that.”
“Leave her, and I will take care of it. She’s working for me and will answer to me. I don’t want you near her, Amari. Do you understand?”
My heart skipped a beat when Rafael protected me from her. Even with his hardened heart, I couldn’t believe Rafael didn’t want anyone to harm me.
“She’s nothing but a slave. I must discipline her as your woman!” she shot back. “Do you want her to continue talking shit to my face?”
“Don’t make me chase you out of my house.”
Amari looked at me and scoffed. While I stood there with my head lowered, waiting for Rafael to move me to another post because of her.
“She can’t stay here, Rafael. If she stays, it means I leave. So, you decide.” Amari gave him an ultimatum before she left.
Rafael glanced at me, then turned and went after her. My heart sank when I thought of everything she had said before Rafael came.
I was scared that she might do something because she suspected the baby wasn’t Chris’s child, but Rafael’s. She wouldn’t like anything more than to see me dead or sent away from Rafael’s house.
I sat down on the bench and cried. I thought of my father and what he would’ve done to prevent the wedding if he weren’t in the hospital and if he knew who I was.
I was tired of everything Rafael had put me through.
My thoughts were quickly cut short when I heard someone shouting from inside the house. When I listened closely, the voice resembled my mom’s, and I quickly got up from the bench and rushed inside the house.
“Let me go! I am Rafael’s mother-in-law, and I don’t think he would want you to drag me inside the house like this!” she shrieked while two men were holding her arms. “Don’t you hear me? Rafael Sterling is my son-in-law!”
“Mama?” I stood at the back door from the hallway, surprised to see her.
The last time we talked, she told me she was no longer my mother and instructed me not to call her again.
“You see? Rafael is married to my lovely daughter, Narra. So how could you treat Rafael’s wife’s mother like this?” she retorted.
The guys let her go and leaned back when Rafael approached from the living room, with Amari following with a bag.
“We’ve found her, sir. She was on her way to see you when we stopped her on the road.” The guys informed Rafael when he arrived at their side.
I swallowed and wondered why he had instructed his men to find my mother. My heart raced, thinking Rafael knew everything and wanted to confirm the truth with my mother.
“Oh, thank you, guys. You may leave.” He excused them, and I leaned closer, trying to find out why they had brought my mother to the house.
Amari rolled her eyes and exhaled deeply as she stood beside Rafael. “I’m not going anywhere. I won’t let Narra and her mother turn this place into a circus when I’m gone.” She looked at me as if she wished to continue slapping me like she had wished earlier.
“What’s going on here, Narra? Who is she?” My mother looked at me, and the dirty apron and head covering.
I was a maid and a gardener of the man who was to be my husband.
I rolled my eyes and folded my arms, knowing fully well that she was happy to see me in that state. She had told me before the wedding that Rafael would never love me because he loved my sister.
“Leave my sight, Amari. I want to talk to Narra and her mother. You either leave the house or go back to my room,” he instructed her as his eyes burned into my skin.
When Amari was gone, Rafael took us to his study and closed the door. My mother didn’t even want to stand near me.
“What’s going on, son? I thought you were happy with my daughter and the deal we made.”
“Your daughter is pregnant. You gave her to me, knowing she was carrying another man’s child. Do you know the consequences of what you’ve done?” His eyes darkened as he looked between me and my mother.
“She’s pregnant?” My mother looked at me, her eyes wide with bewilderment.
It was truly amazing how great she was at acting as if things were great between us, and she wasn’t happy that Rafael wanted to kill me.
“She can’t be pregnant, Rafael. I made sure of it before she married you. My goodness, Narra,” she scoffed. “Did you lie to me when you told me you were a virgin? How could you do this to your mother and husband? This is unacceptable, so you must abort the baby.”
I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering what kind of mother she was. She was ready to do anything for Rafael, even if it meant stepping on me.
I truly applauded Rafael for whatever he said or did to make my mother agree to sell me to him.
She could’ve fought for me, just as she could’ve fought for Narra if she were alive.
“You knew about Chris, Mother. Why are you lying? You sold me to this monster because you were trying to save your life, weren’t you?” I stepped toward her.
“This is an outrageous lie, Rafael!” She looked at me. “Do whatever you want with her. She’s your wife. If she dies along with the bastard in her belly, then I will mourn her death, just as I mourned her sister whom she took from me.”
