Ancient she-wolf
Charlotte
"I don't understand why you want me to understand these things so much," I said angrily. "Nothing proves that I'm descended from those Aurora she-wolves," I pointed at Gabriel, who raised an eyebrow.
"I know you are," he said simply, leaning back in his chair. "I just don't know how you managed to hide for so long." I stood up angrily, slamming my hands on the wooden table.
"I didn't hide!" I shouted and Gabriel seemed surprised by my attitude. "I grew up in the West, being humiliated by everyone for being a fatherless daughter, excluded from the pack, treated as an outcast by everyone, and living off small prey and animal scraps to survive with my mother. Believe me, if I had suspected that there was a pack of she-wolves who would accept and care for me, I would never have had the life I've had."
"I don't even know if there is a pack," Gabriel said, a tone of sadness in his voice, but he quickly pulled himself together. "I only had my mother and she didn't know much more than the basics about the Aurora Wolves either, I even accused her of running away and forcing us to live a complicated life." Gabriel looks at me carefully, I feel a strong pressure and sit down again. "Your scent is very like my mother's, so I know you're a descendant of Selene."
A sadness came over me, the truths and lies that I had heard all my life bubbled up in my mind and weighed heavily on my heart. I even considered that Diane had no idea of our lineage, but that she-wolf had already told me so many lies that there was no way she didn't know.
"My mother told me that she was sold to the former Alpha King because of our special lineage, that only we were capable of bringing the world a powerful Alpha worthy of being the Alpha King." "Even though she was queen, she lay with a soldier to give birth to an heir. That's all she told me."
I gazed at Gabriel, he was deep in thought, with a hand on his chin. Once more, I felt like I saw myself mirrored in a male figure. Gabriel and I shared the same hair, same eyes, and same features. He was, but, an Alpha, demonstrating immense strength and presence, as showed by his capability to take on a Lycan form, even if it was smaller than Logan's. He remained an exceptionally powerful figure despite that.
"If I may ask," I said, drawing Gabriel's attention. "What about your father?"
"I don't know, my mother never spoke of him. I was born and raised in the south, near the sea, just my mother and I. When I realized that I had all the characteristics of an alpha, I took it upon myself to run the city as best as my immaturity would allow." He said calmly, returning his attention to me.
Gabriel looked young, but he had the strength of an Alpha in their 40s. I was curious about his background, but I didn't want to ask his age. Learning that I was part of a special group of she-wolves gave me answers to questions I had, like if I had met a Goddess or my she-wolf. I wondered if Gabriel had any special abilities, or if only females inherited them from their mothers. I wanted to learn more and meet someone who could become my family. Gabriel might be that person. But accepting him also meant accepting the responsibilities he talked about, which I didn't want. Finally, I was beginning to feel happy. We only needed to find Fenrir so that everything could be just the way I always wanted it, ever since I first arrived at that castle.
"Anyway, I have no gift, I'm not descended from anyone and I have no responsibility. I'm just a weak, ordinary wolf." I said in a low, sad voice, and then Gabriel grabbed my chin, lifting my face.
"You shouldn't underestimate yourself like that," he said seriously. "When you connect with your ancestral she-wolf, everything will make sense." I pulled his hand away from me, feeling uncomfortable.
"And how exactly would I do that?" I asked angrily. Gabriel smiled as if seeing me angry amused him.
"Usually the ancestral she-wolf manifests itself, in stressful situations it appears to help the she-wolf overcome them and heal her mind, body, and soul." As Gabriel spoke I could only imagine my she-wolf.
A she-wolf who supports us and helps us overcome moments of crisis and extreme suffering, healing our minds, bodies, and souls. This could only be a great coincidence. If these special She-Wolves existed, then it could be that my lineage was also special and different from the She-Wolves of Aurora. I couldn't stand so many lies, so much pain and fear. Every word Gabriel said was a lie being unmasked before my eyes. I wondered if my mother had ever told me the truth if she had ever really loved me, after all, or if I had only been conceived to secure her position as queen.
"When I was a child," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. I didn't want to burst into tears in front of that wolf. "I was attacked by other cubs in our pack." Gabriel looked at me intently without saying anything. "I came home with serious injuries, dirty and terrified that if they found me next time, I wouldn't come home. It was the night of the full moon and it was the first time I lost control of my body to the she-wolf."
"And do you remember what happened that night?" I nodded. We were silent for a few moments before I continued to speak.
"From that day on, the she-wolf took control of my body once a month, on the full moon nights. But that ended a few weeks ago." Gabriel opened his eyes in shock.
I felt comfortable with him, even though he'd been rude at first. It was liberating to talk about my she-wolf, even if I hadn't told Logan yet. The thought of her being an ancestor watching over me filled me with joy. But she was gone, and I didn't know how to contact her again.
"That's no problem," Gabriel said, getting up and walking over to a shelf. He searched for a while and then returned with a large book with a dark red cover. "There are ancient rituals for communicating with ancestors, you just need to find out what suits your she-wolf. I can help you if you like."
Seeing my she-wolf again and talking to her would be incredible. She's an ancestor who could give me the answers I need, but I must consider the risks before making a decision. Gabriel was eager to convince me that I descended from Selene. He was willing to risk my life in an unknown, ancient ritual, all to prove himself right. We were unsure if he could be trusted or if he was a spy from Aiden and Diane.
"I appreciate your intentions, but this is something that needs to be thought through carefully." Gabriel nodded in agreement, but he seemed a little disappointed by my answer.
It was getting dark when I looked through the library window. Gabriel was gone and I was reading the weird book. The book explained ways to contact spirits and talk to ancestors. Some of the ways just needed simple gifts like rabbits or lots of prayer. Other ways needed more horrible acts like offering flesh and blood or bigger sacrifices. I carried the big book to my room, thinking about how to reveal my supposed family history and my female wolf who watched over me for years. Logan, an understanding wolf, would listen and give advice, but I would obey his wish not to perform any ceremonies to protect my safety, even if he was my partner and Alpha king, I know he would be thinking of my well-being.
When I opened the door to my room, I saw Logan, in his human form, sitting on my bed with his arms resting on his legs and staring straight ahead. His eyes captured me and I sensed that something was wrong. There wasn't the warmth and gentleness with which Logan always looked at me. Logan stood up and walked towards me, stepping hard. Even in his human form, he was big and very strong, someone who didn't go unnoticed and who intimidated anyone. He gripped my shoulders tightly, so tightly that I groaned when I felt his nails dig into my flesh.
"Why were you with him?" I didn't understand his question, I was confused and as I was slow to answer, Logan squeezed my shoulders even tighter and rocked me back and forth. "Answer me!" he shouted
"You're hurting me, Logan." He didn't care he didn't even seem to hear me.
"Tell me, why were you locked in the library with that bastard?" I was shocked to hear. He believed I'd been with Gabriel all day.
