Chapter 39 Complete Severance
Chapter 39 Complete Severance
Marcus was standing right outside the door at that moment.
He had received Emma's message and specifically postponed a meeting to rush over.
On his way there, he had even wondered.
Was she being bullied and having second thoughts?
Or had his playing-hard-to-get strategy worked, and Emma had come around?
Instead, when he arrived, all he saw was that painfully glaring scene.
What was Emma trying to do—introduce him to her next boyfriend?
...
Emma looked down at the message she'd sent half an hour ago that still hadn't gotten a reply.
Remembering Tyler saying he was in a meeting, she figured she probably wouldn't see him today and prepared to leave.
Just then, Marcus pushed the door open and walked in.
His face was dark as he came in and sat down across from Emma.
"Emma, why did you ask me here? I told you, my relationship with my ex-wife can only be remarriage or becoming strangers."
"I know." Emma's eyes were sincere as she spoke slowly.
"Marcus, I don't want to dwell on the past anymore."
Marcus was drinking his coffee on the surface, but inside, his joy was almost impossible to contain.
He instinctively thought Emma was seeking reconciliation—finally, this day had come.
But Emma's next words were like a bucket of ice water poured over him.
Emma pulled a bank card from her bag, placed it on the table, and tapped it. "There's fifty million dollars here. Marcus, from now on, we're even."
Marcus's smile froze on his face, cold spreading through his body.
Seeing he wouldn't take it, Emma got anxious, stood up, and stuffed the card into Marcus's hand. "Just take it."
"Emma, where did you get this much money?" Marcus loosened his grip, and the card fell back onto the table.
Emma was confused for a moment, then her face flushed red with anger.
"What are you implying? Marcus, say what you mean clearly!"
"What I mean is, how did you get fifty million dollars in such a short time? Was what Brynn just said true—did Daniel give it to you?"
Marcus's eyes were full of contempt, cold as ice. "Emma, you should understand, I don't take just any money."
Even more ridiculous was that Marcus had been looking forward to this reconciliation, only to have Emma try to dump him with another man's money.
That humiliation and anger wrapped around him like vines, squeezing his heart painfully.
Emma was so angry her stomach hurt. She shouted loudly,
"Enough! This money is all mine, Marcus. If you believe Brynn so much, why did you even come to see me!"
Emma had indeed taken Daniel's card earlier, but she planned to return it after a while.
This fifty million dollars came from selling the inheritance Madison left behind and some stock shares, plus the design fees she'd accumulated over the past six months.
A few days ago, some long-overdue payments had also come through, which is how she got this money.
She never imagined that in Marcus's eyes, this had become dirty money she'd earned by selling herself!
The onlookers around them couldn't help but gasp at this scene.
They hadn't expected Emma to be so fierce, scolding Marcus without holding back at all.
Brynn had tattled and then come back to watch the show, only to witness this scene.
She'd heard people saying these past few days that Marcus was pursuing Emma, but she hadn't believed it. After all, Marcus was the CEO who single-handedly revitalized the family business—how could he reconcile with a tramp like Emma?
Seeing Marcus being scolded, she barely hesitated before cursing at Emma directly, "Who do you think you are? You cheat and still act righteous? Who knows where you got this money! Emma, you're still Marcus's wife, yet you're fooling around with other men—how shameless!"
"Shut up! Just because he and I were married before doesn't mean we are now. Brynn, I let you off earlier because I couldn't be bothered with you. You know the truth about what just happened better than anyone, don't you?"
Brynn's eyes darted away, not daring to meet her gaze. She turned to Marcus, her tone very certain.
"I'm not wrong, Marcus. She was just over there holding hands with Daniel, and the two of them even bullied me. You have to stand up for me!"
"If you're sick, go to the hospital." Emma rolled her eyes, not wanting to stay any longer. She grabbed her bag and left directly.
Even after she was gone, Brynn kept cursing. "Marcus, I think she's just guilty."
Marcus turned to stare at her, demanding, "Tell me, what exactly did you do?"
"I, I didn't do anything. Marcus, you can't wrongly accuse me."
Brynn's stammering only confirmed to Marcus that she really had done something.
He realized that in his anger, he'd been used by Brynn!
Marcus was so angry he wanted to strangle her.
Emma had just walked out the door and let out a deep breath. For some reason, her heart still felt a bit reluctant.
Emma figured it was probably because she couldn't let go of Marcus's handsome appearance.
But now that she'd given Marcus the card, all that was left was to go through the divorce proceedings at court. Marcus should cooperate nicely, right?
The moment Emma had this thought, Marcus walked out. He said to Emma very naturally,
"Let's go, to the courthouse."
Emma had just been thinking about how to get him to agree, never expecting him to bring it up himself.
Afraid Marcus might change his mind tomorrow, she quickly got in the car, her tone urgent. "Okay, let's go right now."
Hearing that cheerful tone, Marcus was so angry his teeth were chattering. Was she really that happy to divorce him?
Once in the car, Emma deliberately kept her distance from him, afraid something else might happen.
Marcus pulled out a jewelry box from the back seat and tossed it into Emma's hands.
Emma didn't even need to open it to know—this was his usual tactic.
If Marcus did something wrong, his apology was to give a jewelry gift.
The value of the jewelry depended on how big his mistake was.
Emma opened it and looked, raising an eyebrow, somewhat surprised.
Marcus had really spent big this time. This gift was the finale piece from an auction a few days ago, called Elysian Aura.
The starting bid had been 150 million dollars, and it finally sold for 400 million dollars. She never expected it to end up in her hands so quickly.
Emma closed the box and tossed it back, her tone cold. "Marcus, such a precious thing should be given to your future wife instead."
"You're right." Marcus unusually didn't argue back, but thoughtfully put it away and returned it to its place.
Emma snorted coldly and turned her head away. Watching the courthouse getting closer and closer, her heart felt strangely uncomfortable.
