Chapter 28 The Creator's Game

Chapter 28 The Creator's Game

The Creator raised his hand, and the world changed.

Not gradually. Not subtly. In an instant, the sky turned purple. The ground beneath their feet became a chessboard pattern of black and white squares. Buildings flickered, replaced by towering game pieces—rooks and knights and bishops looming over the battlefield.

Caspian's breath caught. He knew this. Everyone who'd ever played games knew this.

"The final boss arena," he whispered. "He's turning everything into a game."

Tobin stared at the giant chess pieces. "That's... actually kind of cool? In a terrifying way?"

Fizzlewick was already consulting his tome. "He's reshaping reality to match his will! This is bad! This is very bad! In a game world, he makes the rules!"

The Creator smiled approvingly. "Exactly. Finally, someone who understands." He gestured, and a giant pawn moved across the board, stopping inches from the guild. "This is my world. My game. And you've been playing by my rules since the moment you arrived."

Caspian gripped his conduit. Level 20. Reality Forging. He could create anything.

But the Creator could create everything.

"Then we'll just have to break your rules," he said.

He focused. Imagined a sword—not just any sword, but one designed to cut through game mechanics. It appeared in his hand, blazing with light.

The Creator raised an eyebrow. "Reality Forging. Impressive. You've grown faster than I anticipated." He shrugged. "But growth means nothing against the one who set the level cap."

He snapped his fingers.

Monsters appeared. Not from rifts—from thin air. Dozens of them. Hundreds. Classic RPG monsters—slimes, goblins, orcs, trolls. They surrounded the town, surrounding the defenders.

Elara raised her sword. "Everyone, to positions! Protect the town! Protect each other!"

The defenders shouted and moved, meeting the monster wave with everything they had.

Bulkan roared and charged into the thickest group, his axe carving a path. Tobin danced between enemies, his spear finding weak points. Boris fought like a man half his age, old skills blazing. Rina and the Rangers moved like shadows, picking off targets from the edges.

Marnie stood with the guild, her kitchen knife replaced by something else—a blade of pure light, formed from her own will. "The spoon protects the others. I protect you."

Caspian nodded and turned to the Creator.

The Creator was watching the battle with mild interest, like a player observing an NPC fight. "Your friends are impressive. For characters, anyway. But characters can be deleted."

He pointed at Tobin.

Caspian moved without thinking. Reality Forging created a shield between the Creator's finger and his friend. Something invisible slammed into it—hard. The shield cracked but held.

Tobin looked up, eyes wide. "Did he just try to—"

"Keep fighting!" Caspian yelled. "I'll handle him!"

The Creator laughed. "You'll handle me? You, a bug in my code, with a stick and a few tricks?" He shook his head. "I made this world. I know every line of its code. I know what's possible and what isn't. And you—" his eyes narrowed "—you shouldn't be possible."

"Maybe that's why I'm going to win."

Caspian charged.

What followed was unlike any battle he'd ever fought.

The Creator didn't move like a fighter. He moved like a programmer, snapping his fingers to spawn obstacles, gesturing to create walls, pointing to delete chunks of ground. Every attack was an edit to reality.

Caspian dodged, wove, used Reality Forging to counter. When a wall appeared, he created a door. When the ground vanished, he made a bridge. When monsters spawned around him, he forged weapons to cut them down.

< Level Up! >
< Level 21 >

He was learning. Adapting. Growing.

The Creator noticed. "Still leveling? Even now?" He almost sounded impressed. "You really are a glitch. Experience gains shouldn't work this fast."

"I'm a dedicated grinder."

Caspian forged a chain and wrapped it around the Creator's ankle. For a second, it held. Then the Creator erased it with a look.

"Annoying. But ultimately futile."

He raised both hands. The chessboard pattern beneath them shifted. Squares rose and fell, creating obstacles. Giant pieces moved, trying to crush Caspian between them.

Caspian moved, jumped, climbed. He forged climbing claws, then a grappling hook, then wings—actual wings—to stay ahead of the collapsing terrain.

Below, the battle for Oakhaven raged.

Bulkan had fallen. No—he was resting, Caspian saw. Taking his three minutes of sleep before getting back up. Tobin guarded him, fighting off monsters with desperate energy. Elara led the defenders in a rotating formation, holding the line. Boris had been wounded but kept fighting. Rina and the Rangers picked off targets relentlessly.

Marnie stood at the center, her light-blade cutting down anything that got too close.

They were holding. Barely.

But the Creator wasn't done.

"You know," he said conversationally, still manipulating the battlefield, "I didn't expect any of you to get this far. The Gilded Fox. A joke guild from a nowhere town. And yet here you are, threatening everything I built."

He paused. Looked directly at Caspian.

"I respect that. Really. Which is why I'm going to offer you a choice."

The battlefield froze. Monsters stopped moving. Defenders paused mid-swing.

"Join me."

Caspian stared. "What?"

"Join me. Help me run this world. We'll rewrite the code together—fix the bugs, add new content, make it perfect." The Creator smiled. "You're clearly talented. A natural programmer. With your instincts and my knowledge, we could create something beautiful."

Caspian thought about it. For a split second.

Then he laughed. "You think I'd join you? After everything you've done? After you wiped out half this world?"

"Collateral damage. Necessary for balance."

"You killed people. Millions of people. And you're offering me a job?"

The Creator's smile faded. "I'm offering you a place at my side. Don't waste it."

Caspian looked down at the battlefield. At his friends, frozen mid-fight. At the town he'd come to call home. At the people who'd believed in him when no one else would.

"I already have a place," he said. "With them."

The Creator's expression hardened. "Then you've made your choice."

The battle resumed.

But something had changed. Caspian felt it—a shift in the Creator's focus. He was angry now. Careless.

And careless gods made mistakes.

Caspian forged a weapon unlike any he'd tried before. Not a sword or a spear. Something smaller. More precise.

A key.

A key designed to unlock the code of this world. To access the Creator's own systems.

He threw it.

The key struck the Creator's chest and dissolved into light. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the Creator gasped.

"What—what did you do?"

Caspian smiled. "I hacked the admin."

The Creator's form flickered. The chessboard pattern wavered. Monsters stumbled, confused.

Behind Caspian, the guild surged forward.
