Chapter 25 The Hero's Welcome

Chapter 25 The Hero's Welcome

The walk back to Oakhaven took three days.

Three days of exhausted silence, punctuated by occasional bursts of laughter when someone remembered something ridiculous from the battle. Three days of Marnie somehow producing hot meals from thin air and a very persistent spoon. Three days of Bulkan sleeping anywhere flat, Tobin talking endlessly about their victory, and Fizzlewick recalculating their survival odds approximately forty-seven times.

"It doesn't make sense," he kept muttering. "Twenty-three percent. We beat twenty-three percent. The math doesn't work. We should be dead."

"Fizz," Tobin said for the tenth time. "We're not dead. Celebrate."

"I am celebrating. I'm just also confused."

Boris walked at the front of the group, his steps steadier than they'd been in years. The flask still appeared occasionally, but less often. Something had shifted in him during the battle. The old hunter was back.

Elara noticed it too. She walked beside her father more often than not, talking quietly about nothing important. Rebuilding something that had been broken for a long time.

Caspian brought up the rear with Marnie, his conduit in stick form, his mind still processing everything. Level 16. Form Fusion. A direct confrontation with the Creator's avatar.

He'd stared into the face of the being threatening this world. And he'd won.

Well, they'd won. The guild. His family.

Marnie touched his arm. "You're thinking too much."

"Always."

"It's okay to be happy. Just for a moment." She smiled slightly. "We saved the world. Well, a small part of it. But still."

Caspian smiled back. "When did you become the optimistic one?"

"Always was. Just quiet about it."

On the third day, Oakhaven appeared in the distance.

Smoke rose from chimneys. Fields stretched green and gold. The wall, small and humble compared to the capital's, surrounded everything familiar.

Tobin started running. "WE'RE HOME! ACTUAL HOME! WITH PEOPLE WHO KNOW US!"

Bulkan grunted and picked up his pace. Even he seemed eager.

By the time they reached the gate, word had spread. People were gathering. Faces Caspian recognized—the baker, the blacksmith, the innkeeper's wife, the kids Tobin had told stories to.

Old Man Haggerty was there, leaning on his cane. "Heard you closed a rift! Heard you fought a god! That true?"

Tobin puffed up. "Absolutely true! We fought shadows and monsters and a big scary avatar thing, and Caspian stabbed it in the face with a sword made from his stick, and Marnie's spoon exploded with light, and—"

"Tobin," Elara interrupted gently. "Let's get inside first."

But the crowd didn't want to wait. They surged forward, patting backs, shaking hands, pressing drinks and food into their arms. Someone produced a makeshift banner that said "WELCOME HOME FOXES" in slightly crooked letters.

Boris stood in the middle of it all, tears in his eyes. "They remember us. They actually remember us."

"You're the town's guild," a woman said. "Of course we remember."

The Hearth's Refuge waited at the end of the street. It looked exactly the same—old, creaky, slightly falling down. It was the most beautiful thing Caspian had ever seen.

Inside, someone had prepared a feast. Not Marnie's cooking, but close. Tables groaned under the weight of food. Ale flowed freely. The entire town seemed to have packed into the old tavern.

Boris raised a tankard. "To the Gilded Fox! The worst guild in Oakhaven, and apparently the only one that matters!"

Everyone cheered.

The celebration lasted hours. Stories were told and retold, each time with more dramatic flourishes. Tobin was in his element, acting out battles, using a bread loaf as a pretend monster. Fizzlewick corrected details constantly, which everyone ignored. Bulkan sat in his corner, accepting pats on the shoulder with grunts of acknowledgment.

Marnie somehow ended up in the kitchen, helping the cooks improve every dish. Elara moved through the crowd, talking to everyone, being the leader they needed.

Caspian found a quiet corner and just... watched.

His guild. His home. His people.

A small girl tugged at his sleeve. The same one from before, with the braids. "Mister Stick Man? Can I see your stick?"

He smiled and held it out. She touched it carefully.

"Does it really turn into things?"

He nodded. "Watch."

He shifted it to yoyo, then back. Her eyes went wide.

"Can it turn into a flower?"

Caspian concentrated. Flower wasn't a form he had. But maybe...

He focused on the idea. Not a weapon. Just something pretty. Something to make a kid smile.

The stick shimmered. Shifted. Became a simple wooden flower, petals and all.

The girl gasped. "It's beautiful!"

Caspian stared at it. He'd done that. Created something new, just by wanting to.

< New Form Unlocked: Ornamental Shapes >
< Your connection to the conduit deepens. Imagination is now a factor. >

He laughed and handed her the flower. She ran off to show her friends.

Elara appeared beside him. "Making kids happy now?"

"Apparently." He watched the girl go. "This is weird, right? All of this?"

"Completely weird." She leaned against the wall beside him. "But good weird."

They stood together, watching their guild celebrate.

Later, when the crowd thinned and the hour grew late, the Gilded Fox gathered at their usual table. Boris at the head. Elara beside Caspian. Tobin sprawled across two chairs. Bulkan upright but asleep. Fizzlewick still taking notes. Marnie emerging from the kitchen with tea.

Boris raised his cup—tea, for once. "I don't have a speech. Never been good at them. But I want to say something." He looked at each of them. "Twenty years ago, I lost everything. My friends. My purpose. Myself. I spent two decades drinking away the memory of failure. Then you lot showed up." He paused. "You reminded me what a guild is supposed to be. Not power. Not glory. Family."

Tobin sniffled. "Who's cutting onions?"

"No one's cutting onions."

"Well, someone should stop."

Everyone laughed.

Caspian looked at his System, still there, still pulsing quietly.

< Current Level: 16 >
< Available Forms: 11 >
< Next Milestone: Level 20 - Major Evolution >

Level 20. Something big waited there. But that was future Caspian's problem.

Present Caspian had a mug of tea, a table full of friends, and a home.

A notification appeared.

< New Quest: The Creator's Return >
< Objective: Prepare for the final confrontation >
< Timeframe: Unknown >
< Rewards: Survival of everything you love >

He smiled and dismissed it.

Tomorrow, they'd plan. Tomorrow, they'd train. Tomorrow, they'd worry about gods and wars and endings.

Tonight, they celebrated.
