Chapter 22 The Road to Ruin
Chapter 22 The Road to Ruin
The first day of travel felt almost normal.
The road from the capital to Oakhaven was familiar now. They'd walked it weeks ago, full of nerves and hope. Now they walked it again, full of purpose and dread.
Tobin tried to fill the silence with his usual chatter. "So, closing a rift. Anyone know what that actually looks like? Does it just... poof? Explode? Make a sound? I hope it makes a sound. A satisfying one. Like a really loud thwump."
Fizzlewick consulted his tome. "Historical records of rift closures are extremely rare. The only documented successful closure occurred during the original invasion, when a combined force of mages managed to seal a small rift for approximately six hours before it reopened. The sound was described as 'a screaming tear followed by wet silence.'"
"That's horrifying."
"Most historical events are."
Bulkan grunted. It sounded like agreement.
Marnie walked at the back, one hand on her spoon. It had been glowing steadily since they left the capital, pulsing gently like a heartbeat. She didn't seem concerned, so everyone tried not to be concerned.
Caspian kept his conduit in stick form, but he could feel the other forms waiting just below the surface. Level 12 had given him something new—not just individual forms, but the ability to shift between them faster than thought. In the middle of a fight, he could be yoyo one second, rope dart the next, bo staff after that. It felt like progress.
Elara walked beside him, her eyes scanning the horizon. "We'll reach the waystation by nightfall. After that, it's two more days to Oakhaven."
"Then the rift?"
"Then the rift." She glanced at him. "You okay?"
"Ask me after we survive."
She smiled. It was tired but real. "Deal."
The waystation appeared as the sun set. Same clearing. Same well. Same benches. But something felt different.
Boris noticed it first. He held up a hand, signaling everyone to stop.
"What?" Elara whispered.
"Listen."
They listened. The forest was silent. No birds. No insects. Nothing.
Tobin swallowed. "That's not good, right? That's definitely not good."
Fizzlewick opened his tome, flipping pages rapidly. "Animal silence is often a precursor to significant magical events or the presence of high-level predators. Given our proximity to the rift, it's likely that—"
A sound interrupted him. A low growl, coming from the treeline.
Everyone turned.
Eyes glowed in the darkness. Multiple pairs. Moving.
Bulkan hefted his axe. Tobin raised his spear. Elara drew her sword. Marnie's spoon hummed. Fizzlewick clutched his tome like a shield. Boris pulled a battered weapon from his pack—an old sword, well-maintained despite years of disuse.
Caspian's stick shifted to rope dart, ready.
The creatures emerged. Wolves. But wrong. Their eyes glowed red. Their fur was patchy, revealing sickly grey skin underneath. Foam dripped from their jaws.
Rift-touched. Monsters corrupted by proximity to the tear in reality.
"There are at least eight," Fizzlewick whispered. "Maybe more in the trees."
Elara's voice was calm. "Circle formation. Protect each other. Don't let them separate us."
They moved into position, backs toward each other. The wolves circled, testing, waiting.
One lunged.
Bulkan's axe met it mid-air. The creature crumpled. But the others took that as a signal.
Chaos erupted.
Caspian's rope dart shot out, wrapping around a wolf's leg. He yanked, pulling it off balance, then shifted to yoyo and cracked it across the skull. Shift back. Rope dart again, targeting another.
Tobin's spear danced, keeping wolves at bay. He used his power strike once, impaling one through the chest, then fell back to normal thrusts.
Elara moved like water, her sword finding gaps, her shield deflecting claws.
Boris fought like a man twenty years younger, his old skills returning with every strike.
Marnie stood at the center, her spoon glowing bright. When a wolf got too close, she simply pointed at it. A pulse of light shot out, sending it flying.
Fizzlewick shouted facts. "Their eyes are sensitive! Target the eyes! Also their underbellies are less protected! Also—"
"Fizz, just keep shouting!" Tobin yelled.
The fight lasted minutes. It felt like hours.
When the last wolf fell, they stood panting in the clearing, surrounded by bodies.
Everyone was alive. Bruised, scratched, exhausted. But alive.
Tobin laughed weakly. "First night out and we're already fighting mutant wolves. This is fine. Everything's fine."
Bulkan grunted and sat down heavily. Even he looked tired.
Marnie moved among them, checking wounds, her spoon glowing softly as she touched each injury. The light seemed to help—scratches closed slightly, bruises faded.
Caspian stared at her. "Since when can it heal?"
Marnie shrugged. "Since always. Just never needed to before."
Boris sheathed his sword, his hands shaking slightly. "That was close. Too close."
"We survived," Elara said. "That's what matters."
They made camp in the waystation, too exhausted to push further. Fires were lit. Watches were set. Marnie cooked something that somehow made everyone feel better.
Caspian sat apart, staring at the dark treeline. More eyes could be out there. More monsters.
Elara sat beside him. "You're thinking too hard."
"Someone has to."
"We all do. That's the point." She leaned against him slightly. "We're going to make it, Caspian. We're going to close that rift and save Oakhaven and then figure out the rest."
He wanted to believe her. He really did.
The second day was worse.
The forest grew darker as they approached the rift. The sky, visible through the trees, had taken on a sickly purple tinge. The air felt wrong—thick, heavy,带电.
They moved slowly, carefully, weapons always ready.
More monsters appeared. Small at first—rift-touched rabbits that attacked with unnatural ferocity. Then larger things. Creatures they couldn't identify, twisted by the rift's energy into forms that shouldn't exist.
They fought. Again and again.
By evening, everyone was running on fumes.
Caspian leveled up twice more. Level 13. Level 14. New forms unlocked—a grappling hook, a short sword, a shield. Each one arrived just when he needed it.
< Current Level: 14 >
< Available Forms: 9 >
< Warning: Aether reserves depleting faster than normal due to rift proximity >
He felt it. Every shift cost more. Every fight drained him.
But they pushed on.
That night, they found the first sign of the rift itself.
The trees ahead glowed faintly purple. The air shimmered like heat rising from stone. And in the distance, a sound—a constant, low hum that vibrated in their bones.
Fizzlewick checked his tome. "We're close. Very close. The rift should be visible by morning."
Elara nodded. "We rest here. Full watches. No one sleeps alone."
They huddled together, too tired to care about personal space. Marnie passed out food. Bulkan kept his axe in his lap. Tobin actually fell silent for once.
Caspian stared at the glowing horizon.
Somewhere out there, the rift waited.
And beyond it, the Creator's army.
But they weren't done yet. Not even close.
