Chapter 110 The Port-Wine Stain Birthmark
Chapter 110 The Port-Wine Stain Birthmark
Maureen's POV
~continuation~
By the time I arrived at Liam’s house, my heart was pounding so loudly that I was sure it would give me away. The cab had barely driven off before I found myself standing at his door, staring at it as though it might suddenly open on its own. I lifted my hand and knocked, my knuckles trembling slightly.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
It was his maid.
“Good afternoon, ma’am,” she greeted politely, stepping aside just enough to look at me properly.
“Good afternoon,” I replied, forcing a small smile. “Is Liam home?”
She shook her head gently. “No, ma’am. He hasn’t returned yet.”
The words sank heavily into my chest. For a moment, disappointment threatened to overwhelm me, but I quickly pushed it aside. I hadn’t come all this way just to turn back.
“That’s fine,” I said after a brief pause. “I’ll wait for him.”
She nodded and stepped aside fully. “Please, come in.”
I thanked her quietly and walked into the living room. The space felt familiar, yet unbearably empty. The faint scent of Liam’s cologne lingered in the air, wrapping around me like a memory I couldn’t escape. I sat down on the couch, folding my hands tightly in my lap, my back stiff with tension.
Minutes passed. Then more minutes.
I checked the time more than once, my foot tapping lightly against the floor. Eventually, the tight grip of anticipation loosened, replaced by exhaustion. My shoulders sagged, my head leaned against the back of the couch, and before I realized it, sleep pulled me under.
Laughter woke me.
I jolted upright immediately, my heart racing as I blinked rapidly and scanned the room. For a moment, I was disoriented. Then I realized the laughter wasn’t inside the house.
It was outside.
Liam’s voice.
My breath caught. I wiped my face quickly with my hand, smoothing my hair down in a rush. My pulse thundered in my ears as I sprang to my feet and hurried toward the door.
I was just steps away from the threshold when I froze.
There were other voices.
My hand hovered inches from the door handle as uncertainty slammed into me. Liam wasn’t alone. My chest tightened, and I stepped back, suddenly unsure. I didn’t know how he would react if he saw me. I didn’t know if he even wanted to see me.
I began pacing, back and forth, my arms wrapped around myself as though I could physically hold my courage together.
Then one voice rose above the others—loud, and careless.
“Do you guys remember that night six years ago at 101 Club Arena?” the man said, laughing loudly. “When Liam linked up with that hot chick? That girl was all over him that night.”
I stopped pacing.
My stomach dropped.
Another voice followed, just as casual, just as cruel. “Yeah, I remember. They had a one-night stand. That was his first. I’m sure he enjoyed it very well.”
Everything inside me went still.
My breath caught painfully in my throat as memories surged forward without warning—sharp, vivid, unstoppable. The flashing lights of the club. The music pounding in my ears. The heartbreak I had been drowning in after Kelvin left me. The stranger whose face I could barely remember.
My knees weakened. I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself, my fingers digging into the surface.
Then one detail rose above the rest, clear and undeniable.
The port-wine stain birthmark on his left thigh, Sam has the same birthmark.
My vision blurred as realization hit me with brutal force. My hand flew to my mouth, stifling the sound that tried to escape as tears welled up and spilled over.
Liam.
The stranger I had spent that night with was Liam.
I staggered backward, shaking my head slowly as my heart slammed violently against my ribs. “No… no,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “How did I miss this?”
Liam was my son’s father.
The truth crashed down on me all at once, heavy and unforgiving. I sank back onto the couch, my body trembling uncontrollably as silent sobs wracked through me. My hands pressed instinctively against my stomach as though I could protect the past from unraveling.
I had been loving him. Dating him. Fighting for him all this time without knowing Liam was the father of my son.
And everything had just changed.
I didn’t wait a second longer. My chest heaving, I stormed out of Liam’s house. My hands shook as I gripped the door handle, and when I slammed the door behind me, the sound reverberated sharply through the hallway. I didn’t care. The loud thud of the door seemed to echo the chaos inside me, and I knew immediately that Liam and his friends had noticed.
A voice called out almost instantly.
“Hey…..Maureen!” Barclay stepped forward, his usual easy grin in place, but something in his tone sounded cautious. “How have you been?”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My lips pressed into a thin line, and my body felt heavy and raw with emotion. Instead, I paused for a second, inhaling sharply, my eyes locking onto Liam’s.
I saw him. His brows furrowed slightly, confusion and hurt flashing across his face. The storm of emotions in his eyes mirrored my own. Tears threatened to spill over at the corners of my eyes. I swallowed hard, my throat tight.
Then, without another word, I turned on my heel and stormed off down the walkway. My heels clicked loudly against the pavement as I moved, each step fueled by anger, heartbreak, and disbelief.
I barely noticed the city lights or the cars around me. All I could feel was the burning ache in my chest and the relentless sting of tears sliding down my cheeks.
Within minutes, I had hailed a cab. The moment I slid into the backseat, the driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. I nodded once, barely acknowledging him. The cab jerked into motion, and I pressed my palms to my face, letting the tears come freely.
I couldn’t hold them back. My body shook with sobs, my breaths uneven. Between gasps, I grabbed my phone from my bag, fingers fumbling as I dialed the one person I knew could calm me—Linda.
