All He's Good For
“You were right.”
Irene threw down her bag, purse, and jacket before emptying her pockets. Brenden was still in his scrubs, having gotten off shortly before her, and looked at her in confusion.
“I was right about what?”
“It was Sine. Sine took the drugs.” She yanked her stethoscope from around her neck and slung it into her bag. She popped down on the couch beside Brenden. Her pride was taking a hit, but she sucked it up. This was how Brenden would have felt if she had been right.
But she wasn’t right. Not even close.
Had she accused Dr. Swift simply because she was jealous? It seemed absurd at that moment.
To Brenden’s credit, he didn’t say ‘I told you so’ or make her feel worse. Instead, surprise lit up his face, his excitement impossible to mask. “Are you serious? What happened?” he asked. “Did she admit to taking them?”
“I went through her phone,” she said unapologetically, ignoring the way Brenden’s eyebrows arched in a silent question. “She sent texts to her boyfriend talking about it. And then she caught me snooping and I confronted her.”
“What made you snoop? I thought you didn’t think it was her.”
“I didn’t.”
Irene proceeded to tell him how she saw incriminating text coming through, which led her to read the rest of them. She also told him about how she called Haley and confessed, which resulted in Haley having to return to work to have a private conversation with Sine in her office.
Sine was dismissed early, in terms, and Andy and Irene had to divide up and take care of her patients for the remainder of the shift.
All in all, it was a long day.
“Anyway,” she concluded, leaning over to steal a kiss from Brenden before slipping off the couch. “I’m going to take a shower. Andy’s doing drinks at his house again and I thought I would go.” She could use at least a few drinks.
“Okay, but I have work tomorrow,” Brenden said, standing and following her to the bathroom. He stripped off his clothes along with her, and she discreetly appreciated him through the large mirror. He caught her gaze and grinned crookedly. She awkwardly hid a blush because he still had that effect on her.
“That means you can be designated driver,” she successfully avoided ogling his naked body as she said this, instead focusing her attention on adjusting the water temperature.
“Designated driver, huh?” he said as she hopped into the shower. “Is that all I’m good for?”
“One of the few things,” she teased.
She stood beneath Brenden’s shower sprays, letting the hot water hit her shoulders and hair, sighing as it slowly eased all the worries of her day. Brenden approached her from behind and just barely pressed their bodies together before planting a soft kiss on her neck. He ran his fingers lightly down her arms, then over her ass, finally settling on the heat between her legs.
She moaned softly and leaned back into him, allowing his strength to support her.
“I’m happy for you, baby,” she murmured quietly in her ear.
She turned around and wrapped her arm around his neck, pressing her chest against his. He smiled down at her, then placed a wet kiss on her lips, the spray around them creating a thick condensation that beaded and dripped on skin untouched by the multiple streams of water.
“Me too,” she said with another sweet, lingering kiss. Just standing there with his arms around her, knowing she would be supported no matter what life threw her way, made the events of the day and the ones to come even remotely tolerable.
.
They made it to Andy’s place a few minutes before ten. His neighborhood was quiet, the streetlights casting a calm glow across the roads and houses. From the outside, it would be easy to think an older couple lived there, enjoying their twilight years. No one would guess it housed Andy, the loud-mouthed male nurse who kept the community younger than it would have otherwise.
As they made their way to the side door, a steady drum of music could be heard. Irene jokingly reminded Brenden that this was where she first dazzled him with her magnificent tits.
“The power of your tits?” he questioned in amusement. “Is that what happened to me these past few weeks?”
“They are so powerful, even my ratty old work bra couldn’t hold you back from being bewitched by me.”
“Yeah. What happened to that bra, by the way?”
“It’s at the apartment… somewhere,” she said evasively, not wanting to tell him how she trashed it as soon as it appeared she would get laid again.
He never would have worn it if she thought there was a chance he would see it. Now, her work bras consisted of fancy lace and underwires that dug into her ribcage but provided ample amounts of cleavage. Because who needed support when the prospect of spontaneous sex in the call-room loomed over her head?
“Should we knock or just head in?” Irene asked briskly, changing the topic. The music was loud at the door, and she was not sure they would hear even if they knocked.
“Let’s go in.” Brenden pushed the door open, leading them both straight into the kitchen. The light was on and various forms of alcohol containers rested on the counter, unattended. All the voices and music streamed in from the living room.
Ward, Talia, Sammy, Riley and another guy from the emergency transport department were present. On one end of the couch was Andy and right beside him the heeled and elegant Dr. Stone perched right beside him.
She was impossible to miss. She sat stiffly, unwilling to let herself get comfortable. She was out of place among the rest of the group. Irene didn’t think she and Andy were seeing each other any longer, but that changed often and their breakups were hard to keep track of. The last she had heard, Dr. Stone was seeing someone else.
Her knee was touching Andy’s in an obvious way that made her wonder if she was still seeing the other guy.
Her eyes lit up when she saw Brenden and Irene. Irene knew immediately, the two of them were one of the few people she knew in the room. Greetings were made and Andy stood up to make Irene a strong celebratory drink, announcing to everyone that she had single-handedly eliminated the hospital drug ring.

Irene hit him on the arm to shush him. Sine might have been dismissed early that day, but it didn’t mean she was gone for good. Even so, it was crass of Andy to throw a celebration.
