Shadow Games

The Shadow Pack's den glowed with firelight, making long shadows on the cave walls. Thorne paced back and forth, his golden eyes reflecting the flames. Five Alpha wolves sat watching him, leaders from nearby packs. Each one had come alone, in secret.

"You've all felt it," Thorne said, stopping to face them. "The change in the air. The shift in power."

Alpha Chen of the River Pack nodded slowly. "My youngest wolves are showing strange abilities. One made water dance between her fingers yesterday."

"Mine too," said Alpha Reyes of the Mountain Pack. "A boy of twelve lifted rocks without touching them."

Thorne smiled, but his eyes stayed cold. "And you know who's to blame."

All eyes turned to a map spread on a big stone table. At its middle was the Moonlight Pack's territory, marked with a red X.

"The Blackwood Alpha and his Omega mate," Alpha Wilson of the Eastern Pack growled. "They're upsetting the balance."

Thorne picked up a wooden cup and took a slow sip. "Not just upsetting it. Destroying it completely."

From the shadows, Luna watched quietly. Her face showed nothing, but her mind raced. Thorne didn't know she had been working with Kaida. He didn't know she had helped Liam and Elijah escape Morta's poison. And she wanted to keep it that way.

"What exactly do you propose, Thorne?" asked Alpha Diaz of the Southern Pack, a woman with sharp eyes and silver streaks in her dark hair.

Thorne moved to the map, putting one finger on the Moonlight territory. "Together, we surround them. Together, we give them a choice: stop this magic nonsense or face all five packs in battle."

Alpha Morris of the Western Pack frowned. "Direct conflict? That hasn't happened in generations."

"Because it hasn't been necessary," Thorne answered smoothly. "Until now."

Luna stepped forward, her heart beating. She needed to warn the Moonlight Pack somehow, but first, she needed information.

"Husband," she said softly, "these Alphas have traveled far. Perhaps they'd like to hear what happened at the Stone Circle last week? The rumors are... concerning."

Thorne's eyes sharpened slightly at his mate, but he nodded. "Of course. Our scouts witnessed something extraordinary."

The Alphas leaned forward as Thorne explained the purple barrier now surrounding the Stone Circle, and how the Moonlight Pack was trapped inside.

"If they're trapped, why do we need to act?" Alpha Chen asked.

"Because the barrier will fall at the full moon," Thorne stated. "In three days. And when it does, they'll emerge either united in power or destroyed from within. Either way, we must be ready."

Luna slipped away as the Alphas fell into talk. She hurried to her secret healing room and closed the door. From a secret space beneath a loose stone, she pulled out a small crystal – a gift from Kaida.

"Show me Aria," she whispered to the crystal.

The clear stone clouded, then showed the inside of the Stone Circle. Luna gasped at what she saw. The ground had split open wider. Strange purple light poured from the cracks. The bony hand was now a full arm, reaching up toward the sky.

Luna could see Aria and Sky working together, using earth and air magic to try to push the arm back down. Liam and Elijah stood close, their hands joined, power flowing between them.

The picture faded. Luna slipped the crystal back into its hidden place and took a deep breath. She needed to get word to them about Thorne's plans.

A soft knock on the door made her jump.

"Come in," she called, trying to sound calm.

The door opened to reveal Alpha Diaz. The Southern Pack chief closed the door quietly behind her.

"You don't agree with your mate," she said. It wasn't a question.

Luna picked her words carefully. "I believe in balance."

"So do I," Alpha Diaz responded, surprising Luna. "Which is why I'm concerned about Thorne's true intentions."

"What do you mean?"

Alpha Diaz moved closer, speaking in a whisper. "He showed us an ancient scroll earlier. Before you arrived. It spoke of absorbing power from other wolves."

Luna's blood ran cold. "What else did it say?"

"That's just it," Alpha Diaz frowned. "He wouldn't let us read it fully. But I saw a drawing – a wolf standing over others, pulling something like light from their bodies into itself."

Luna knew exactly what scroll that was. It was the banned knowledge of power stealing – how an Alpha could take the life force of other wolves to strengthen themselves. Knowledge that had been put away for good reason.

"Why tell me this?" Luna asked.

"Because I've heard rumors about you," Alpha Diaz said. "That you're not just a healer. That you know things about the old ways. True things."

Before Luna could reply, the door swung open. Thorne stood there, his face dark with rage.

"The meeting continues, Diaz," he said coldly. "And my mate needs to prepare food for our guests."

Alpha Diaz nodded and left without another word. When she was gone, Thorne stepped into the room and closed the door.

"What were you discussing?" he asked.

"Healing herbs," Luna lied easily. "Alpha Diaz has a sick pup in her pack."

Thorne studied her face. "You've been acting strangely these past weeks, Luna."

"Have I?" she asked, keeping her voice steady. "Perhaps I'm just tired. So much has happened."

"Indeed." Thorne picked up one of her herb jars, sniffed it, then set it down. "After the meeting, I want you to prepare your strongest potions. War potions."

Luna's heart skipped. "You're really planning to attack?"

"I'm planning to win," Thorne corrected. "The old scrolls show the way. When an Alpha kills another Alpha during the full moon, their power transfers to the victor."

"And if that Alpha is bonded to an Omega?" Luna asked quietly.

Thorne's smile sent chills down her spine. "Then both powers transfer. Imagine it, Luna – the strength of an Alpha with the magic of an Omega, all in one wolf. In me."

"The packs won't follow you if you kill their Alphas," Luna pointed out.

"They will when they see my power," Thorne replied. "Now prepare the potions. We move at dawn."

He left, closed the door behind him. Luna waited a few seconds, then rushed back to her hidden crystal.

"Show me Kaida," she whispered urgently.

The crystal stayed clear. Luna tried again. Nothing happened.

A shadow fell across the small window of her healing room. Luna looked up and nearly screamed. Rook stood there, his eyes glowing purple with Morta's power.

"Looking for someone?" Morta asked through Rook's mouth.

"What do you want?" Luna hissed.

"To deliver a message," Morta smiled. "Kaida sends her regrets, but she's... indisposed at the moment."

"What have you done to her?"

"Nothing she hasn't done to others," Morta responded. "Now, about those war potions. I have some suggestions."

Luna backed away. "I won't help you."

"Oh, I think you will," Morta said, climbing through the window. "Because if you don't, I'll tell Thorne exactly who you've been working with all these years."

As if to make the point, Morta held up a small carved wooden wolf – Luna's secret token from Kaida, hidden where no one could have found it.

"Shall we begin?" Morta asked, her purple eyes gleaming in Rook's face. "We have a busy night ahead of us."

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky as storm clouds gathered. The full moon was coming.
