Chapter 236: When the Sun Became a Wolf 3

Chapter 236: When the Sun Became a Wolf 3
Elara Campbell’s POV
Stolen blood screamed through me. Solar energy not mine clawed against my skin. Spirit magic brushed my bones with hundreds of broken whispers. The corrupted symbols recognised the seal inside me and yanked hard, trying to pull my wolf back into silence forever. I screamed.
Jaxson roared my name behind me. Do not pull away, Philip had said. If you enter the pattern and break contact too soon, the backlash may turn inward.
So I held. Helena. I called her not with words but memory.
Warm hands. Soft song. Tired smile. The ledger. The sentence she left me.
If she hates me for this, she has the right. I did not hate her then. Not in that moment.
I saw her bending over an infant who carried too much power for a world full of monsters. I felt her fear. Her love. Her desperation. Her dying magic feeding mine so Dorian could not find me sooner.
The seal inside me trembled. It was not evil. It had been a door held shut during a fire. But the fire had found me anyway. And now I was grown.
Now I could choose. “Thank you,” I whispered through the pain.
The infant seal cracked. Not like glass. Like sunrise splitting a locked room. My wolf tore forward. The pain was beyond anything I had known.
Bones moved beneath my skin. Not breaking exactly, but becoming something they had always been meant to remember. My spine arched. My hands slipped on the focus, claws forming where fingers had been. Magic flooded my blood so violently that my scream became a howl halfway out of my throat.
I heard Jaxson shout my name. I felt his fear slam through the bond. Then the bond opened. Fully. No thread.
No blocked bridge. No distant warmth through stone. Him. All of him.
His wolf crashed into mine like night meeting sun, not destroying, not swallowing, answering. The mark on my neck burned once, deep and true, completing what choice had begun before fate could fully speak. This did not replace the night I chose him. It did not erase the cage, the hurt, the unforgiven scars or the freedom he had given me. It stood on top of all of it.
Chosen first. Bonded now. My wolf rose. White-gold light burst through the chamber. The focus screamed beneath my claws.
Dorian staggered back, smoke rising from his face. The corrupted counter-anchor shattered. The restraint across my chest fell away. My body changed completely.
Frightening. Magnificent. Mine.
Fur flowed over me, white touched with gold as if sunlight lived beneath every strand. My paws struck the black floor, claws bright like molten dawn. Power moved through my body, not easy, not painless, but true. My wolf shook herself once, and golden light rippled under her coat. I was not incomplete.
I had never been incomplete. I had been locked away. And now the lock was ash. Jaxson shifted beside me. His wolf was enormous, dark and scarred, eyes fixed on mine with a recognition so complete it stole what human breath I had left.
Mate, his wolf said through the open bond. Not command. Not claim alone. Wonder.
My wolf answered. Mate. The chamber changed around us.
Nearby vampires recoiled as my light spread. Some burned when they remained too close, their skin smoking, their eyes turning black with panic. Others weakened, stumbling as if the stolen strength in their blood had remembered the sun and hated it. Wounded wolves lifted their heads. Some pushed back to their feet, strength returning enough to hold a line, not because I healed them fully, not because I was stronger than every Alpha in the room, but because my presence made the darkness around them thin.
Kael tore through two vampires near the lower arch, still far more brutal than I was, still Alpha in a way that made the room bend. I was not above him. Not above Jaxson. Not above every wolf who had fought longer than I had known my own body. But I was no longer beneath the lie.
I joined the battle. My first leap was clumsy. Powerful, but clumsy.
I slammed into a vampire too hard and crashed sideways into a stone rail. Pain flashed through my shoulder. Jaxson’s fear hit me instantly through the bond. I am alright, I pushed back without words. He understood.
His wolf ripped the throat from an elite guard trying to reach my flank. I turned on another vampire, light rising beneath my fur. The creature hissed, swinging a silver blade. I dodged badly, felt the edge slice my side, then drove my glowing claws across his chest. He screamed as sunlight poured through the wound, burning him from inside out.
Horror and power moved through me together. I did not enjoy it. I did not hesitate either.
Ivy fought near the entry with her unit, keeping thralls away from the wounded. A vampire rushed her blind side, weakened but still fast. I lunged before I thought. My body crossed the space in a white-gold flash and hit him hard enough to throw him away from her. He burned where my shoulder touched him.
Ivy turned, eyes wide for half a second. Then she smiled fiercely. “About time you showed them what they missed,” Ivy said.
My wolf gave a rough sound that might have been laughter if wolves laughed. Ivy looked past me at another rushing attacker and lifted her blade. “Beside me,” Ivy ordered.
I stood with her for one breath, two underestimated women holding the centre of a war powerful men had built over our lives. Then Jaxson’s warning tore through the bond. Dorian. I turned. The blood king was retreating.
His borrowed protection was failing now. Ordinary sunlight from the shaft above touched his shoulder, and this time smoke rose in a dark curl. His beautiful face had cracked around the edges, not literally, but in control. The ancient thing beneath the young skin showed through at last. He looked at me with hate.
Not desire. Not interest. Hate.
“You should have remained hidden,” Dorian hissed.
My wolf bared her teeth. Jaxson’s wolf came beside mine, dark flank brushing white-gold fur. Together, we faced him.
Malric’s charges detonated somewhere deep in the chamber supports. The floor shook. Black stone split around the broken focus. Stolen blood vessels burst, spilling dark fluid that hissed when it touched the remnants of my light. The fortress groaned overhead.
Philip shouted from behind us. “The structure is collapsing!”
Kael roared orders, pulling fighters back from the lower arch. Hale’s voice crackled through the command line, demanding extraction counts. Silas called evacuation routes. Patrick shouted for counter-hunter teams to move the wounded. Ivy’s strike unit began dragging half-conscious prisoners towards the exit.
Dorian turned and fled through the far passage. Not like a king now. Like a creature that had lost the sun it stole. Jaxson looked at me. Through the open bond, I felt everything.
His terror. His pride. His love. His need to keep me safe and his promise to let me choose. I stepped forward.
My wolf’s answer was clear. We finish this. Jaxson’s wolf lowered his head once.
Together. The fortress shuddered harder as stone began to fall behind us. Then Jaxson and I pursued Dorian into the collapsing dark.
