Chapter 92 Chapter 92
For me to stop trying to save people and start defending my throne.
"Damien? What is going on? What are you thinking about?" Lisa walked and stepped in front of me, her doe eyes staring up at me.
"No, of course I'm not okay. This whole thing is getting out of control, but it is fine. I'll handle it." Her eyes widened in shock and I narrowes my eyes at her.
"Look, maybe, it is not what you think it is. Maybe there is a reasonable explanation for why he is still alive. What if he is trying to collect intel on the Syndicate?"
"You don't know what you're talking about. Collecting intel would mean he is working with one of my affiliates and he clearly is not working with any of my sources."
"Okay, perhaps there is some explanation why he is coming up now? Maybe this is also some part of the Syndicate's plan?"
"I doubt that, and even if it was, I do not fucking care. They have sabotaged me, waged war on me, and it is time to strike back."
The door opened, and Duke walked inside. "Did you speak to Marcus?" I asked him, and he nodded.
"He's still the same boss, claims he doesn't know anything about a Gabriel Sanchez. In fact, he is still stuck in denial about everything."
I rubbed my upper lip vigorously and realised that there was only one way to figure this out. "Take this footage, I want you to get a time stamp on it. Find out what that location is and when that meeting was held. I want answers as soon as possible."
"Yes, boss."
"Damien, this could be dangerous. You don't have the full details yet. When Claudia handed me that...
"Claudia is dead! You said so yourself, Lisa! Claudia is dead, and now, we have nothing left from her angle. You got us this information, you did a great job, but please, I will handle it from here."
"You're letting your rage blind you. We need to figure this out together." She reached for my hand, but I pulled it away. We have been doing this dance for the last couple of days. My head needed to get back in the game.
I could not have anyone around right now. Not when everyone I thought I could trust had already turned on me.
"You should go to your room, Lisa. Stay there, and when I have something figured out, I'll send for you. For now, I need to be alone."
"No! I'm not going to let you sit me back. I brought you the flash drive. I risked my life, I deserve some trust here."
"I don't trust anybody, Lisa! Not right now, I can't." I said and turned my back to her. "Just do as you're told for once!" I roared at her.
I felt her shudder behind me, before turning and walking out of the office. I pulled out a bottle of scotch and poured it into a glass, and then I stood and stared out the window, reflecting on the last time I had seen Gabriel alive.
We had received a message from one of our affiliate sources, regarding a shipment worth billions of dollars that needed cleaning. Of course, the money was dirty, but it was charged in weaponry.
I had made the decision to go alone, but Gabriel had insisted on coming.
"Are you sure about this, Gabriel? Did you backtrack the source of the intel?" I asked him that day as we suited up for the mission.
We wore working men's suits because the location was a construction site that had yet to be finished. The shipment had been abandoned there the previous night, awaiting pickup, and we had to blend in as much as possible.
"I did all of that. You know I'm more meticulous with these kinds of things than you are. That's why I refuse to let you go alone." He had replied.
"Sure, because you think that my instruction is not viable enough for you to follow." I tossed back at him, and he smiled back.
We arrived at the location, but unlike what we had been told, there were still a few working men left. The foreman had demanded they work a few extra hours to top up the work.
"We have to handle this cautiously. Where is it?" I asked.
"The tracker says it is on the top floor. Apparently, if we take the elevator, we could get there faster." It was a joke.
"Or we could get stuck on the fourth floor." We broke into unusual laughter. It was rare. His betrayal had cost me the freedom of trust.
When we got to the top floor, after walking a flight of unfinished stairs, we were met by men from the Syndicate. Guns pointed at us, I raised my hand trying to shield Gabriel from their shot, so that he could pull out his gun, and we could get some action.
Unfortunately, I realised that he wasn't even in the shot to begin with. It was all a sabotage. My phone vibrated in my pocket, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I unlocked it and found that I had received a message. I opened it. It was from Gabriel.
