Chapter 75 Chapter 75
LISA'S POV
My heart continued to thump heavily. I beat him before; I could do it again. All I had to do was use the right tactics and the right amount of force.
Heart still racing, I walked slowly away from my position, secretly eying my surroundings for my next move. All I had to do was wait for him to make a mistake. They always did after all.
I turned around table after table until I was a table away from him, and he raised his hand and signaled me to stop.
"What is it going to be?" He asked, assessing me from head to toe. I swallowed, wetting my tongue, which had suddenly gone dry.
"I'll figure it out as we go." I said through gritted teeth. He smiled, revealing bloodied teeth from where my head came in contact with his jaw.
"I understand that you tend to be smart on your own and reckless, but I'll warn you if you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Move!" He motioned towards the door.
I placed my hand on the table and grabbed a handful of sawdust. Turning around sharply, I tossed it in his eyes and jumped over the table. I didn't head for the door as expected, instead I picked up another cut log of wood and slammed it into his head, cauding the him to bleed.
He reached for me and grabbed me by my waist as I attempted to dive for his gun, and so, I headbutted him again, making him scream and cuss. I reached for the gun and aimed it for his leg, shooting his knee.
Ivan let out a loud scream and fell to the floor. I rushed out of the shed and ran as fast as I could back to the clearing and straight towards the forest. I didn't even stop to check if I was being followed or not. My legs ran as fas they could.
Leaves slapped my face and twigs wrapped themselves around my ankle but I kept going until I came to the open road and caught a car coming at a distance. I hid to make sure it wasn't one of Alexander's men and as soon as I clarified that it was a delivery truck going to town, I jumped in front of it.
The car swerved to a stop just in time not to crush me. "What the fuck is wrong with you! Miss, are you okay?" The driver, a middle aged man dressed in a dirty white tshirt and an equally dirty apron asked me.
"Help me please, I need to get to town." I said, and he looked at me skeptical for a moment until I pulled the gun on him.
"Did I stutter?" I asked and he nodded shaking.
"Yes yes, get in, free ride to the city." He said and I got in.
I kept my head down throught out the ride. Found a bumper jacket at the back of his van and threw it on. Tied my hair with a band and put on his catering company's cap to hide my face.
"Drive straight and if you have to make a stop anywhere make sure it is a well distance from here." I said and held my gun securedly, constantly checking the side mirrors to confirm if we were being followed.
Several cars passed us along the way, but none of them belonged to Alexander's men. I heaved a sigh as soon as we neared civilization. "Where do I stop you?" He asked.
"I'll tell you when I'm ready to get off." I muttered, holding the gun lowly pointed at him, just in case he decided to act smart.
"I get off the highway after the next two traffic stops. My location is east." He informed me as wd approached the first traffic stop.
When we reached the second, I got off and he drove away. My destination was not far from there, I just had to blend with the crowd and hope nobody recognised me.
I came across a bed and breakfast in the area and found a booth. I kept my head down all the while.
"Can I get you something, Miss?" The pretty waitress asked me. I shook my leg uneasily under the table and my hand fiddled with the gun under the jacket.
"I'll have a glass of iced tea and a burger." I replied. All I needed to do was use their restroom and get out the back door to the spot behind the bed and breakfast.
"Can I use your restroom please?" I asked and the waitress nodded. I walked stealthily to the restroom door as if intending to go in, but I didn't. Instead, I made a left turn and headed out the back of the bed and breakfast.
As soon as I was out the door, I crossed the alley and got to the abandoned building that once used to be a shopping complex. I hid in one of the stores and waited quietly. Eyes shut, exhausted wore me out.
I listened to the bustle of people going about their day in the streets outside, and a melancholic feeling overwhelmed me. In this city wehre crime ran the night time, some people still managed to have a normal life.
I couldn't help but think back to when I had a normal life, it wasn't the best but at least an entire syndicate was not after me trying to kill me.
I wished I could go back to it, but I knew that there was no way I would go back that easily, not after everything I had faced and fought.
A tear slid down my face and I wiped it off quickly. And then suddenly, the door to the store opened and my heart began to beat erratically.
Now, I had to confront another problem. Who could I really trust in this world? Was I even allowed to trust?
"Lisa?" The sound of a familiar voice had adrenaline rush through me and I ran out and jumped into his arms.
"Oh my goodness, Lisa! I'm so glad you're okay." Damien's large hands cupped my face, searching them for injuries.
"I'm okay." Tears filled my eyes as I looked at him, still unable to believe that he had survived that fatal shot.
"How are you even still alive?" I asked.
"My necklace took most of the impact, I got hurt bad but not critically."
Silence raced through the air as we stared at each other, as the fat elephant in the room waited to be acknowledged.
