Chapter 105 Chapter 105
"Well, look what we have here," Ivan said with a sinister smirk on his face. Soon, some other men gathered behind him, holding guns.
"The two people with bounties on their heads. Well, let's just say, even if you were to survive tonight, you have a world of bounties on your head, and the criminals out there are looking for you." He grinned.
I pulled Mia behind me, and Damien pushed me behind him. "So, Alexander couldn't stand to face me himself, so he sent his handyman to do the job." Damiem mocked him.
Ivan's face contorted into a frown as he spoke. Mia squeezed my hand tightly as Ivan's eyes caught hers.
"Aww, pretty thing, did you think escaping would be that simple? That these here clowns can help you escape?" He sneered at her.
"I already beat you once, what makes you think we can't do it now?" I said boldly to take his mind off Mia. His eyes landed sharply on me with a glare, and he baredhis teeth angrily.
"You!" He started walking towards me, but Damien grabbed his arm and incapacitated him. His men started running in when Damien's men rushed up and started shooting at them.
"Run!" I yelled to Mia. I pulled her along with me, following behind Damien, who used himself as a shield for us.
One of Damien's men threw in an explosive into the room, and we all rushed down the stairs as the explosion rocked the whole house. We tumbled down over each other, but luckily, no bones were broken.
I got up in the ruckus to the distant sound of Mia's screams. Looking up, I saw Ivan dragging her by her hair. Fear gripped and awakened me. I got up and started to run after them, but saw that Damien was already ahead of me.
He launched himself at Ivan, throwing him off balance and forcing him to let go of Mia. I rushed to her side and pulled her up. The cars were just ahead of us, but just as we got within eight feet of one, it blew up.
Mia and I fell to the ground from the explosive force. Gravel scratched my back as I groaned out in the dark. "Are you alright?" Mia asked, taking hold of my hand. I nodded and got up.
"Let's head to the other cars!" Damien yelled, taking hold of my other hand. We rushed towards the other cars we had come in. His men also had boarded the vehicles, preparing to leave.
Alexander was nowhere in sight. We managed to outmaneuver his men and rescue Mia without having to give her up for the sake of the Syndicate's downfall.
The look on Damien's face was far from satisfied, but I was just glad to have my friend back.
We got back to the mansion and I took Mia to my room, where Elena helped me tend to her wounds. "I'm sorry, did that hurt?" Elena asked as she dabbed my wound with spirit. I nodded, "a little."
It didn't matter how many times we did this, I was always left shaken from the experience. Getting so close to death and looking it in the eyes was not something I thought I could get used to.
"You should get some rest," she said after she placed a band aid over the wound. I helped her pack the items back into the first aid box, and she carried it out of the room. I made sure the door was locked before going back inside.
Mia sat at the edge of the bed in shock, despite having been told to lay down and rest about twenty minutes ago.
I sat down beside her, and stared into space along with her. Goosebumps ran along my skin in torrents, and I couldn't help remembering the fact that I almost lost her and it would have been my fault.
"Are you okay?" I asked, even though I knew it was a stupid question.
"Am I supposed to be?" She asked back, shaking her head. Her eyes were closed now as she heaved out a sigh.
"How long are you going to keep working with these people, Lisa?" She asked. I turned to her, with a frown.
"This was not my choice, Mia. I didn't choose to be trapped here in this place like this, remember? This was all Claudia's fault. If she hadn't given me that dress with those stupid diamonds, I would not have been trapped here." I replied.
"But you're still here. Why haven't you tried to escape? How many opportunities have you had to run away and you're still here?" Mia asked.
"Do you think I want to be here? I mean, yes, I trust Damien to protect me, and keep me safe because he needs me to find out the truth as much as I need him to find out the truth so that I can..."
"Leave? Will you leave?" She asked with all kinds of seriousness. My mouth was open, but the words didn't come out. I couldn't just leave, I was on the Syndicate's radar, Alexander or whoever was in charge would find me within seconds and finish me off.
"I can't just leave like that, Mia."
"You can't or you won't? I almost died, Lisa. I was caught and trapped in that place. Do you know the horrible things they wanted to do to me? The horrendous things I would have gone through that night dressed as I am? Shorts and shirts?"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke, I felt my heart break into a million pieces. She was right, this life was ruining me and everyone I loved, but how could I leave now that I was already in too deep?
"I understand, Mia, I was scared too and that was why I made sure Damien and his men were out this night to get you."
"It doesn't matter. I mean, I'm glad you did, but this is not the life we envisioned for ourselves, and if you feel the same way, then come with me, Lisa. Let's escape this hellhole this night." She said, determination filling her eyes.
I looked at her with regret. I knew this was a defining motion for us, the strain had already been pulled, and our relationship was hanging in the balance.
