Chapter 180 The Shape of Quiet

Chapter 180 The Shape of Quiet

Rosco

The estate felt different without operational urgency pressing against the walls. No comm chatter. No men moving with purpose down hallways. Just the low murmur of a television in the family room and the faint hum of the city beyond reinforced glass.

Eden had chosen the spot on the floor herself.

She’d dragged one of the oversized cushions down in front of the couch and folded her legs beneath her, eyes locked onto the animated chaos unfolding across the screen. Some Disney movie I didn’t recognize — bright colors, loud music, exaggerated villains.

She’d warmed up to me faster than I expected.

Children are either wary of men like me or they gravitate toward steadiness. There’s rarely a middle ground. Eden seemed to have assessed me within minutes of returning from the island. She’d watched the way I moved around her mother. The way I positioned myself near doors without making it obvious. The way I never stepped between her and Liana.

She’d decided I was safe.

That decision didn’t feel casual.

She was too well-behaved. Too polite. Too quick to say please and thank you in a house where she didn’t yet know the rules. I’d seen that before — not in spoiled children, but in children who learned early that compliance kept things predictable.

Liana had raised her that way.

Not rigid. Not fearful. But alert. I could see it in the way Eden’s eyes flicked toward entrances whenever someone entered a room. The way she instinctively stayed within arm’s reach of her mother without being told.

Liana hadn’t hovered today.

That was the difference.

She’d stayed close, yes — but not in a frantic way. Not in a way that telegraphed panic. She moved with Eden through the house like a woman who had finally been handed something back that belonged to her.

Comfort changes posture.

She was leaning back into the couch now, watching the movie but not with the intensity of someone using it as distraction. Her shoulders had lowered. Her breathing had evened out. She was here.

Eden’s voice had slowly grown softer as the movie continued, her body tipping sideways against the cushion. By the time the animated sidekick started singing something overly dramatic, she was asleep.

Not curled tightly.

Just… out.

I glanced toward Liana.

“Should we move her to her bed?” I asked quietly.

Liana shook her head without hesitation. “No. Let her sleep there. She’ll be fine.”

There was something almost reverent in the way she said it.

Like this — her daughter asleep in the middle of a living room floor with no threat looming — was sacred.

I stood and grabbed one of the folded blankets from the back of the chair, shaking it out gently before laying it over Eden. She stirred slightly, then settled again.

When I returned to the couch, I sat at the far end automatically. Space was habit with her. I didn’t assume proximity.

She watched me for a moment.

Then she shifted.

“Can you…” she began, hesitating just slightly. “Can you put your arm around me?”

The request was simple. Not seductive. Not layered with implication.

“It makes me feel safe,” she added quietly.

That did something to my chest I didn’t fully examine.

I moved closer and slid my arm around her shoulders slowly, giving her time to adjust. She leaned into me almost immediately, her body fitting against mine without tension.

“Thank you,” she murmured.

We let the first movie roll into whatever the platform suggested next. Something quieter this time. Less singing. More dialogue.

She leaned further into me as the scenes shifted. Her head tipped toward my chest. I felt the moment her weight fully transferred — not bracing, not testing.

Trust.

My hand settled naturally against her upper arm. After a few minutes, without thinking about it, my fingers drifted upward, brushing through her hair in slow, absent strokes.

She exhaled.

A long, soft breath.

The kind that comes when the body finally stops scanning for danger.

I didn’t realize she’d fallen asleep until her breathing changed rhythm.

She’d tucked one hand into the fabric of my shirt, just enough to anchor herself. Eden slept a few feet away, blanket rising and falling gently with each breath.

The room felt… domestic.

I’d never thought that word would apply to me.

The door to the hallway opened quietly. Matteo stepped in, pausing when he took in the scene.

His mouth curved slightly.

“Domestication looks good on you,” he said under his breath.

I didn’t move.

“She asked,” I replied.

“I’m sure she did.”

He crossed the room and leaned against the far wall, arms folded loosely.

“There’s something about her, man,” I said before I could stop myself.

Matteo raised an eyebrow.

“Liana?”

“Yeah.”

He exhaled once through his nose. “Tell me about it.”

“You felt it too?” I asked.

“With Valentina?” He smiled faintly. “Immediately.”

I looked down at Liana, asleep against my chest, her hair spilling over my arm.

“What is it about these Maranzano women?” I muttered. “It’s like they cast spells with their eyes.”

Matteo laughed quietly. “That sounds like you’ve got it bad. And you’ve barely known her a week.”

“I don’t know what I’ve got,” I admitted. “But it’s something.”

He studied me for a moment, then glanced toward Liana again.

“You think she could ever…” I hesitated. The question felt heavier than I liked. “You think she could ever let me in? Really trust me? After everything?”

Matteo gestured toward the woman asleep on my chest.

“She already is,” he said simply. “You think that’s accidental?”

I looked down again.

She’d curled slightly closer at some point, her fingers tightening unconsciously in my shirt.

“She can,” Matteo continued quietly. “And she will. You just can’t rush it.”

“I’m not rushing anything.”

“I know.”

The hallway door opened again, this time with more noise. Valentina’s voice drifted in first, mid-sentence. Tess followed behind her.

Matteo lifted a hand immediately.

“Shh,” he said softly. “Eden’s sleeping.”

Valentina’s eyes softened when she saw the girls. She lowered her voice automatically.

Tess stopped just inside the room.

Her gaze locked onto me.

Liana asleep against my chest.

My hand still moving gently through her hair.

I watched the reaction land in real time.

Her jaw tightened.

Just slightly.

Her eyes hardened for half a second before she smoothed her expression.

She didn’t say anything.

Didn’t comment.

“Well,” she said after a beat, her voice carefully neutral. “I’m going to my room. If anyone needs me.”

She turned before anyone could respond.

The hallway swallowed her footsteps.

Matteo watched her go.

Then he looked back at me.

“I told you,” he said lightly, “that sticking your dick in every chick in your vicinity would bite you in the ass one day.”

I shrugged.

“She’ll get over it.”

“Will she?”

“She knew we were just fucking around,” I said evenly. “There was no promise. No illusion.”

Matteo didn’t argue.

He just watched me a second longer.

“Just make sure she understands that,” he said.

“I will.”

He nodded once and turned to follow Valentina out of the room.
