Chapter 10 Angela, Georgia slept with my fiancé
Sonia's POV
“Lucian…” I murmured his name as I left his office. Things have been moving pretty fast for a while now, and this meeting he had with me confirmed my fear. He was the man I caught watching me while I cried. He must've also heard my conversation with Michael.
It felt like my boss knew too much about my personal life, and I'd really appreciate it if he ignored me and focused on the other workers.
“Security? What am I? A prisoner?” I asked myself rhetorically while thinking about his words.
When I got back to the department, Angela had gone out, and I was alone with about six busy workers. I tried to focus on my job, and when I finally began to concentrate, a young lady walked in. She looked furious, and two men stood beside her.
“Fuck, they're the financial director, Mr. Tim's children. The ones who wanted the promotion,” one of the workers whispered to her friend, and I frowned.
Lucian said that Mr. Tim and his children weren't involved in the promotion, so they must be here to protest against his words. But why are they moving towards me?” I panicked.
“You must be, Sonia, right?” One of the men asked me, and I reluctantly nodded my head.
“Yes, and you are?” I asked the men, while focusing my eyes on the lady.
“We heard news about your wedding. Who would have thought that you were getting married without your company’s approval,” the lady said with a taunting voice and sat down at my desk. Her bold perfume filled the room, making it hard to breathe.
My brows furrowed, feigning ignorance. “Wedding? What are you talking about?” I asked, wondering how they knew about Michael and my marriage.
One of the men chuckled under his breath. “Don’t act innocent, Sonia. Word around the company is that you’re engaged to the CEO. Some say you even moved into his house. Others say…” He paused, smirking, “...you trapped him with something more permanent, like a baby.”
Laughter rippled between them, the kind that cuts through one's feelings and shatters your hopes.
My chest tightened, and I arched my brows, thinking I was being pranked. “That’s ridiculous. Mr. Lucian lived in Singapore, while I grew up in Hollywood. There's no way we could have met. I don’t know where you got this news from, but it’s a lie,” I said with a firm tone, trying to keep my voice steady even though my heart was pounding.
The lady leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with spite. “Oh, please. People like you don’t climb this high without special favors. You think we don’t see how you suddenly got the CEO’s attention? You think the rest of us are blind? The CEO knows your name, and you both stared at each other for an hour. Is it a coincidence?”
It felt like the ground was crumbling beneath me. Lucian and I had been careful, no one could’ve seen us that night. Even if they had, there was no proof. Still, the way she said it, with such confidence, made my skin crawl. I realized that she wasn't aware of our one-night stand, she was just jealous of the attention I was receiving.
“You’re mistaken, Miss Tabitha,” I said again, more quietly this time. “If you don’t have evidence, I’d suggest you leave before I report this to HR.”
The director's daughter, Tabitha, laughed, a high, brittle sound that drew a few stares from the other workers. “Report us? Please. You think HR would protect you? Everyone knows how things work here. My dad is in charge, and I can have you fired.”
Just then, the door swung open.
Angela stepped inside, her eyes sharp as glass. Her usually calm face was drawn tight with suspicion. “What’s going on here?” she demanded and ran to my side, thinking I was being bullied.
The three intruders froze, their smirks faltering for the first time. Almost everyone in the company knew Angela, she was friends with everyone, and with just a single word from her, she could expose everything about you.
Angela’s gaze shifted from them to me, then back. “I asked a question.”
Tabitha slid off the desk, adjusting her bag. “Just congratulating your friend,” she said smoothly. “Seems she’s been hiding a few… personal achievements.”
Angela’s eyes narrowed. “Is that what they’re calling lies these days?”
Tabitha scoffed and walked out, her brothers following her. The room fell into silence again, except for the pounding of my heart.
Angela turned to me. “Are you okay? Did they scare you?” She asked, her eyes scanning my body.
“I’m fine,” I lied, just as I always did.
But then Angela stepped closer, lowering her voice. “You’re not. And I know it’s not just office drama. I went to see Georgia today. She was with Michael, and they were…..” She paused, studying my expression. “Are you already aware of their kiss?” She asked me eagerly.
My stomach twisted. “What? I don't know what you're talking about.” My voice cracked as I lied.
“Don’t lie to me, Sonia. We've been friends for way too long,” Angela continued. “Something’s off, not just with your fiancé. Ever since the CEO’s arrival, someone has been trying to destroy you.”
I stared at her, the truth sinking like ice into my veins.
Michael. Georgia.
“Could they be behind the rumors? Maybe Michael doesn't want people to blame him for our wedding's cancellation so he is sharing rumors about me.” I reasoned, my hands under my chin thoughtfully.
Knowing the truth was one thing but proving it was another. If Michael and Georgia were really out to get me, then Angela deserved to know. I looked at Angela's face, she looked worried, and lines had settled on her forehead.
“Angela, I'm not getting married to Michael anymore,” I informed Angela, and her eyes widened, but she quickly adjusted to the news.
“Does this have something to do with Georgia and Michael's kiss?” Angela asked with a calm voice. I was surprised, she was taking the news better than I thought.
I nodded at her question. “Yes, I caught them having sex two days ago,” I confessed.
“Having sex?” Angela looked shocked. “And you kept this away from me? Why?” She asked with a grimace.
I bowed my head in shame. “Because I was ashamed of myself, Angela. My fiancé slept with my best friend, does that sound right to you?” I asked, and a tear dropped from my eyes.
Angela nodded in understanding, and I could see the pain in her eyes. “Give me a minute, Sonia. I have someone to attend to,” she said with a fake smile, and I immediately understood what she meant.
“Problem, she'll cause problems!”
