Chapter 300 Carry Me to the Bathroom
William threw the blanket in his hand directly at Thalia, startling the half-asleep woman into full consciousness. She shot up from the lounge chair in an instant. "Are you real?"
The man frowned. "What do you mean real or fake?"
"Come here, bend down." Thalia waved her hand, signaling him to bend over.
Though confused, William did as told and leaned forward slightly. Just as he bent down, Thalia's hand reached out.
"Thalia..."
"Are you trying to murder me first thing in the morning?"
"Does it hurt?" Thalia asked.
William said, "How about I try pulling your ear?"
Thalia slumped back onto the lounge chair, staring at William in a daze. "You scared me..."
"What did you do?" William asked.
"I dreamed you died, died horribly."
William laughed in exasperation and asked coldly, "Really?"
"But the way you just acted doesn't seem like I died. If I died, you should be laughing in your dream," William leaned down, trapping her against the lounge chair, his tone unhurried. "The way you looked, it was more like I lived to a hundred and dragged you along with me."
Thalia's mouth twitched.
The dream she had could indeed be described that way - she and William had grown old together and lived long lives.
How thrilling!
Thalia forced an insincere and perfunctory smile. "Stayed up all night and now you're hallucinating?"
Not wanting to continue this topic with William, she hooked her arm around his neck and said sweetly, "Carry me to the bathroom, let me take a piss so you can look at yourself in the mirror."
William complained, "Disgusting."
"That's the point."
...
"Scarlett's birthday party, and she specifically invited you," Evelyn said while pointing at a few words on the invitation. "Bring your boyfriend."
"She specifically wrote to bring your boyfriend, don't you think that's meant to mess with you?"
In the study at Mistwood Hill, Evelyn's complaints came one after another. Thalia looked at the words, feeling so disgusted she wanted to roll her eyes.
"If she invites me, I'll go."
"If you don't bring a boyfriend, people will definitely talk."
"Whatever. If a mere Scarlett can upset me, then all these years would've been for nothing." She flicked her fingernails and glanced at the cat curled up next to Evelyn.
The latter picked up her coffee cup and took a sip. The first sip didn't register, but on the second sip she exclaimed, "Where did these coffee beans come from?"
"Why?"
"They're premium!" Evelyn didn't used to like coffee, but over the years as her workload increased, coffee gradually became her lifeline. After drinking so much, she developed a taste for it and became particular about the beans.
Thalia shook her head. "The staff bought them in bulk, I'm not sure."
"Bulk purchase? You think I believe that? Everyone knows William is extremely particular about his private life. Who doesn't praise Mistwood Hill for being understated luxury with taste?"
"I'll ask for you later."
"Scarlett's party, are you going?"
"If you go, I'll go. If you don't go, I won't go."
Evelyn was too lazy to waste time on these people. With Thalia there, she could at least watch some drama. Without Thalia, it would be completely boring.
In the evening, William came home to find Thalia had already left. He asked Fallon and learned she had gone to the Lewis family's birthday party.
"Scarlett?"
"They sent you one too. The invitation is in your car," Finn reminded him quietly.
Whether he accepted invitations from Jasper depended on his mood.
William originally had no interest, but hearing that Thalia went, he suddenly became interested.
Sure enough, a man in love follows his wife wherever she goes.
"Dragon Lake Manor?"
"It's not far from Mistwood Hill."
To be precise, it was at the entrance at the foot of the mountain, extremely close.
...
"Why did Scarlett choose this kind of place for the party? It's remote and full of mosquitoes. Wouldn't a hotel be better?"
"What do you know? This place is worth its weight in gold. Dragon Lake Manor is where the rich and powerful gather. It's normally not open to the public at all, and Mistwood Hill above it is even more prestigious. The villas at Mistwood Hill require not only proof of assets but also connections to buy. Only a handful of people in Emerald City qualify."
"Scarlett chose this location just to show off the Lewis family's status!"
"Which family in all of Emerald City would spend tens of millions on their daughter's birthday party?"
True, wealthy families valued sons most. As for daughters, they were just accessories. The fact that the Lewis family would spend tens of millions on Scarlett's birthday party already beat out many wealthy families in Emerald City.
The conversation came to an abrupt halt, probably because everyone realized they were just one of many accessories too.
They used to only envy Thalia, now there was another one - Scarlett.
"You're alone? Didn't my invitation say to bring your boyfriend?" Thalia had casually thrown on a black dress without any intention of competing with anyone, but the more casual she was, the more it made Scarlett jealous.
"My boyfriend? I'll owe you that one, I'll bring him for you to see another day."
"What? The number one lady of Emerald City doesn't have a boyfriend?" Scarlett was dressed to the nines today. Standing at the entrance greeting guests, she saw Thalia coming from afar. Seeing her alone, she thought her opportunity had come.
Hearing this, Thalia laughed: "What? Is my status as Emerald City's number one lady given to me by a man?"
"Do you have some misunderstanding about me? Does Ms. Lewis not welcome me? Should I leave then?"
The commotion at the entrance attracted attention. Everyone pretended to be casual but was actually watching the drama unfold, moving closer.
"Not at all, I'm just concerned about you."
"Thank you so much, you're even concerned about my non-existent boyfriend. When I find one, I'll bring him for you to feast your eyes on."
"Then Ms. Lewis better use those 250-degree nearsighted eyes of yours to take a good look for me. In case you see wrong and he cheats on me later, I'll definitely blame you."
Evelyn, standing nearby, couldn't help but laugh when she heard "250-degree nearsighted eyes."
As soon as Thalia entered, she was surrounded by men - those she used to hang out with, those who later coveted her, basically anyone who had any interest surrounded her.
They called her "Ms. Smith" with such lingering affection.
When William arrived at the entrance, he saw this scene. No wonder they say he has good taste - the wife he found is a heartthrob who can be coveted by others at any moment.
The moment Evelyn turned to pick up a glass from the tray, she caught sight of William. In the venue, business tycoons from all directions were gravitating toward him. William stood motionless in the center of the crowd, his gaze fixed on Thalia's back. From this distance, Evelyn couldn't make out his expression.
She poked Thalia with her hand. The latter looked back at her, then followed her gaze. Thalia's back went numb.
"Don't you two look exactly like the male and female leads in those tragic novels - where the female lead has her kidney taken by the male lead, becomes dead inside, then goes out flirting and gets caught?"
