Chapter 72 The Road Ahead
Chapter 72 The Road Ahead
The two days before the meeting felt both endless and far too short.
Zephyra moved through them with a strange, heightened awareness of what is too come. Every small moment of hers, carried extra weight. The way the morning light hit the kitchen table, to the familiar scent of Seraphina’s coffee and, the steady warmth of Kaelric’s hand in hers during the drive to school. The pendant never left her neck, its silver glow a constant, quiet reminder of what was coming.
Kaelric stayed close to her all through. He even canceled his extra training sessions to be with her, but he also made sure she had space when she needed it. On the first day, they spent long hours in the backyard. Zephyra practiced shifting more intentionally, pushing herself to hold a near-complete partial form for over an hour. Her wolf felt clearer now. It is not just present, but almost protective, as if it understood the significance of the meeting ahead.
“You’re ready for more than you think,” Kaelric told her afterward, wrapping her in a towel as she released the shift and shivered in the cool air. “That is not just power, it is control and courage you are showing.” He encouraged her smiling like a proud boyfriend
That evening, Seraphina joined them for a long and honest conversation at the dining table. She offered to come to the meeting, but Zephyra gently declined.
“I need to do this part mostly on my own,” she explained. “Don’t worry, Kaleric will be there.” She said. “ However….. i , want you to be here when I come back. Should incase I can’t help me process anything, I will need you to help me process whatever happens.”
Seraphina nodded, tears in her eyes. “Then that’s what I will do. I will be waiting here with open arms, no matter what you bring home.”
The second day was quieter. Zephyra attended a short cheer practice in the morning, finding unexpected peace in the familiar movements. Kaelric had his final light team session before nationals. They met afterward and drove to the overlook, where they spent the entire afternoon talking about Aldric, and about everything that has happened.
About how the fake dating had slowly become real. About the scandals that had nearly broken them. About the parents’ marriage that had crumbled so they could build something honest.
About the future they wanted together, her alpha training and scholarship, his rugby career on his own terms, a life where they chose each other every single day.
As the sun began to set, Kaelric turned to her fully, gray eyes intense in the golden light.
“Whatever happens with your father,” he said, voice low and unwavering, “it doesn’t change us. We started as a mistake and a revenge plan. And, we have grown to become something real despite every force that was trying to tear us apart. I’m not going anywhere, Zephyra. Not tomorrow. Not ever.” He said aligning his head with her forehead , breathing in her scent.
Soon , he met her lips with his , enveloping them in a deep kiss. One that is slow, and full of promise. The mate bond flared brightly between them, the silver thread visible in the fading light, wrapping around them like a vow. When they finally pulled apart, breathing hard, Zephyra rested her forehead against his.
“I’m scared,” she admitted. “But I’m not running from it. Not anymore.”
That night, after a quiet dinner with Seraphina, they packed a small bag together. Nothing extravagant , just clothes, and the pendant (which she refused to remove), and a notebook where Zephyra had written down questions she might want to ask Aldric. They didn’t rush the packing. Every item folded carried intention.
Later, in bed, with the house quiet around them, Zephyra turned to Kaelric in the darkness. The mate bond glowed softly, illuminating their faces.
“Make love to me,” she whispered. “I want to be your woman. I want to feel completely chosen by you , before we face whatever comes next.”
Kaelric’s response was immediate and reverent. His hands moved over her with aching tenderness, every touch deliberate, every kiss full of the depth they had built over months of chaos and healing. They moved together slowly, passionately, the mate bond blazing brighter than it ever had, silver light filling the room as their bodies and souls aligned completely. It wasn’t just physical , it was a reaffirmation. A claiming. A promise spoken without words.
Afterward, they lay tangled together, sweat cooling on their skin, hearts still racing.
“No matter what happens tomorrow,” Kaelric murmured against her hair, “this is real. We are real.”
Zephyra pressed closer, the pendant warm between them. “I know.”
Sleep came eventually, deep and dreamless.
The next morning, Elias’s car arrived early. It was a sleek, guarded vehicle with tinted windows. Kaelric loaded their bag while Seraphina hugged Zephyra tightly on the doorstep.
“Come back to me,” Seraphina whispered. “No matter what he says.”
“I will,” Zephyra promised.
As they drove away from the house , the only home she had truly known after the fall. Zephyra reached for Kaelric’s hand. He held it firmly, thumb stroking her knuckles.
The road stretched ahead, winding toward neutral territory where her father waited.
The slow, careful rising she had cherished was accelerating.
But this time, she wasn’t falling.
She was walking forward, her wolf is awake with her mate beside her, her heart is open but protected at the same time. Now, she is stepping into the truth that she had spent her whole life circling.
Whatever waited at the end of this road, she would face it. She is Zephyra , the daughter of the alpha who is an alpha herself. She found her fated mate and family. From now on, she is going to be herself, through and through, without being apologetic about it.
