Chapter 63 The First Light

Chapter 63 The First Light

Monday arrived with a crisp clarity that it almost feels symbolic.

As Zephyra stood outside the private training facility attached to Professor Hilda’s office, the Lunar Crown pendant hidden beneath her shirt. Her hands were slightly clammy. This was no longer casual backyard practice. This was her first official session were she would be  guided, observed. This session is designed to help her safely integrate the alpha blood that had been suppressed for so long.

Kaelric had driven her here and now waited in the car, giving her the space she had asked for. He would be there when she finished, no matter how long the hour went.

Professor Hilda greeted her at the door with her usual calm composure, amber eyes were kind but one can see the hint of professionalism in them.

“Are you ready?” she asked simply.

Zephyra nodded. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

The session was held in a spacious, padded room with reinforced walls and soft lighting. Hilda started with slow  breathing exercises, then guided visualization. Zephyra followed each instruction carefully, the pendant warm against her skin.

When the time came to attempt a controlled partial shift, her heart rate spiked.

“Remember,” Hilda said gently, “you are not forcing the wolf. You are inviting it. Let it rise on its own terms.”

Zephyra closed her eyes and reached inward.

This time, the shift came with surprising smoothness.

Her claws extended fully. Fur rippled down her arms and across her shoulders. Her ears shifted, and her eyesight sharpened dramatically. She even felt the subtle lengthening of her canines. The sensations were intense but no longer overwhelming. She held the partial form for nearly twenty minutes, moving through a series of slow, deliberate movements Hilda had guided her through. The stretches, balance exercises, and simple strikes to test coordination.

When she finally released the shift, she was breathing so hard and sweating, but there was no pain. Only exhaustion mixed with a deep, bone-level satisfaction.

Professor Hilda smiled faintly. “Very good. Better control than I expected for a first formal session. The suppression is lifting cleanly now that you’re no longer fighting it.”

They spent the last fifteen minutes debriefing. Hilda answered Zephyra’s questions about what to expect in future sessions and gave her new exercises to practice at home. By the time Zephyra stepped out of the building, her legs felt steady despite the fatigue.

Kaelric was leaning against the car, arms crossed. The moment he saw her, his gray eyes lit with quiet pride. He pushed off the vehicle and met her halfway, pulling her into a firm hug without saying anything at first.

“How did it go?” he asked when he finally pulled back, hands still resting on her waist.

“Good,” Zephyra said, a small, genuine smile breaking through. “Really good. I held a fuller partial shift than I have before. It didn’t feel like I was battling myself.”

He brushed a damp curl from her forehead. “I’m proud of you. Want to tell me about it on the way home?”

The drive back was peaceful. Zephyra recounted the session in detail while Kaelric listened attentively, occasionally asking thoughtful questions. By the time they reached the house, the nervous energy had mostly burned off, replaced by a quiet sense of accomplishment.

Seraphina was home early from her first full day at the community center. She listened as Zephyra shared how the session had gone, her expression warm with pride and a touch of lingering regret that she quickly pushed aside.

“I’m glad it went well,” Seraphina said softly. “You’re doing this on your own terms. That matters more than anything.”

Dinner that night was relaxed. Kaelric talked about the final team preparations for the nationals. The coaches were confident, and the squad felt cohesive. Seraphina shared a funny story about her new coworkers. Zephyra spoke more about the shifting session, describing the sensations without glossing over the parts that had still felt strange.

Later, when Seraphina had gone to bed, Zephyra and Kaelric retreated to their spot under the oak tree. The moon was bright, casting clear silver light across the yard.

Kaelric pulled her onto his lap, arms wrapped securely around her waist. “Today feels important,” he murmured against her hair.

“It did,” Zephyra agreed, resting her head on his shoulder. “Like I’m finally stepping into who I’m supposed to be instead of running from who I was.”

His hand stroked slowly up and down her back. “You’ve been becoming that person for a while now. The rally fall, the fake dating, the Assembly Hall and every hard thing you faced led you here. To this version of you who can hold her wolf without breaking.”

They stayed outside for a long time, talking softly about the week ahead. Nationals were now only days away. Zephyra’s next shifting session was scheduled for Thursday. Seraphina’s new job was settling into a comfortable routine. The letter to Aldric had been sent, and Elias had confirmed it was received. The meeting with her father still felt distant, but it’s no longer terrifying.

As they finally headed inside, hand in hand, Zephyra felt the truth settle deeper.

The chaotic chapter of their lives, one filled with humiliation, betrayal, fake performances, and family fractures had truly ended. Now , what remains is a Wolf standing tall with her mate by her side.
