Chapter 62 The Week Before

Chapter 62 The Week Before
The days leading up to the rugby nationals began to carry a new kind of anticipation , not the sharp, anxious kind that once defined their lives, but a quieter, more grounded expectation.

It was Thursday evening again, almost exactly one week since Zephyra’s first intentional partial shift. She stood in the backyard once more, the grass now familiar beneath her bare feet. The Lunar Crown pendant rested against her chest, its silver warmth a constant companion. Professor Hilda had advised her to practice every few days in short bursts, allowing her body and wolf to adjust gradually.

Kaelric sat on the bench under the oak tree, elbows resting on his knees as he watched her with focused patience. He had canceled his own evening training session to be here, saying he wanted to witness every step of this new chapter with her.

“Ready?” he asked softly.

Zephyra nodded. She closed her eyes, took three slow, deliberate breaths, and reached inward.

This time, the shift came more smoothly.

Her senses expanded first. The scent of the night-blooming jasmine from the neighbor’s yard grew sharper, the rustle of leaves became layered with the tiny movements of insects. Her fingernails lengthened into elegant claws. A soft ripple of dark fur traced along her forearms and up her neck. Her ears shifted, becoming slightly pointed and more sensitive. When she opened her eyes, they glowed with that faint silver-blue light.

She held the partial shift for almost fifteen minutes, moving slowly through a few basic stretches Professor Hilda had recommended. The wolf no longer felt like something she had to wrestle into submission. It felt like an extension of herself. It is cautious, but willing.

When she finally released it, her legs felt a little unsteady. Kaelric was beside her in an instant, steadying her with strong hands on her waist.

“You held it longer,” he said, pride clear in his voice. “And you looked completely in control.”

Zephyra leaned into him, resting her forehead against his chest. “It still feels strange… but good strange. Like I’m finally meeting a part of me that was locked away for too long.”

They sat together on the bench afterward. Kaelric draped his arm around her shoulders, and she curled into his side, the pendant still warm between them.

“I have my first official session with Professor Hilda on Monday,” she said quietly. “Light forms only, but it feels big.”

“It is big,” Kaelric replied, pressing a kiss to her temple. “And I’ll be waiting for you after. No matter how it goes.”

The rest of the week continued its gentle forward motion.

On Friday, the school buzzed with low-level excitement for the upcoming nationals. Kaelric’s team had secured a strong seeding, and his name was being mentioned more frequently as one of the players to watch. During lunch, Elowen teased him about becoming “nationally famous,” while Zephyra simply smiled and rested her hand on his knee under the table. The old rivalry with Thorne had cooled into a distant, professional tension . Both boys focused on their own performances rather than tearing each other down.

That afternoon, Zephyra joined the cheer squad for another casual practice. The routines felt lighter, the atmosphere more supportive. When she executed a clean tumbling pass without hesitation, a few of the girls actually clapped. It was small, but it landed deeply. The girl who had once been mocked for falling was slowly reclaiming her place in the team.  Though it wasn’t with perfection, but through quiet persistence.

Seraphina’s new job at the community center officially started on Monday as well. Over dinner that night, she spoke about her orientation with a cautious optimism that made Zephyra’s chest feel warm. The blended family experiment had ended, but something quieter and more honest was taking its place.

Saturday brought the heaviest training day yet for Kaelric. Zephyra went with him to the field, sitting in the stands with her notebook. She split her attention between watching him run drills with growing leadership and reviewing the shifting notes Professor Hilda had sent. When practice ended, Kaelric jogged over, breathing hard but smiling.

“The team feels ready,” he said, dropping onto the bleacher beside her. “We are not just skilled  but we are cohesive. Oberon is coming to the first game. He said he wants to see the team, not just me. It felt… different hearing that.”

Zephyra reached up and wiped a streak of dirt from his cheek. “Because you’re playing for yourself now. Not to prove anything to him.”

He caught her hand and kissed her knuckles. “Exactly.”

Sunday was reserved for rest. The three of them Zephyra, Kaelric, and Seraphina , spent the afternoon in the backyard. Seraphina read while Zephyra and Kaelric practiced light shifting together. Zephyra managed to partially shift her hands and face at the same time for the first time. The sensation was still new, but no longer frightening.

As evening fell, the three of them shared a quiet dinner. Conversation turned naturally to the week ahead. Kaelric’s final preparations before nationals, Zephyra’s first official training session with Professor Hilda, and Seraphina’s first full day at the new job.

Later that night, alone in their room, Zephyra lay facing Kaelric in the dark. The mate bond hummed softly between them.

“I’m nervous about Monday,” she admitted. “Not scared exactly… just aware that once I start proper training, everything becomes more real.”

Kaelric brushed his thumb across her cheek. “Nervous is okay. You’ve already survived worse than a training session. And I’ll be here when you finish and  if it goes perfectly or you need to vent about it.”

Zephyra smiled in the darkness and leaned in to kiss him and slow, deep, and full of the quiet certainty they had built over the past weeks. The pendant glowed faintly between their bodies as the mate bond responded, wrapping them in its warm silver light.

The fall had been loud, painful, and chaotic.

This new life they were building filled  with shifting practice, new jobs, approaching nationals, and a father waiting in the wings was an unfolding one careful, honest day at a time.
