Chapter 293 The Cat-And-Mouse Game
Chapter 293 The Cat-And-Mouse Game
Vera's POV
"What are you planning to do?" Atlas asked.
I said, "Grandpa may have seen through Ruby now, but he still has some feelings for her. After all, she's been his granddaughter for over twenty years."
"I want to find out the truth about my mother's death and the baby swap back then. My instinct tells me my mother's death wasn't an accident. I'm going to use this to kick Ruby out of the Grant family for good. Killing someone is easy, but making someone who was born in the clouds fall into the mud—that's way more painful than death."
Atlas looked at me with certainty in my eyes. "Alright, whatever you want."
After a long day, we went to bed right after dinner.
Before falling asleep, Atlas whispered in my ear from behind, "Vera, let's have a wedding. I want to give you the grandest wedding ever."
---
When Atlas said we'd have a wedding, he really meant it.
I had just taken on my new position. Although it was nearly year-end, there was a major bidding project that would affect Grant Group's development next year. Since this was my first time handling it, I needed to study it thoroughly.
So I left all the wedding planning to Atlas.
Early in the morning, I called a meeting with the company executives to familiarize myself with the business and discuss that major bidding project.
The meeting lasted all morning and went pretty smoothly. We made preliminary decisions about the bidding project, though there was still some disagreement about the pricing.
When I returned to my office, I collapsed in my chair with a long sigh of relief.
Willow walked in carrying a lunch box and quickly poured me a cup of coffee. "Ms. Grant, you must be exhausted?"
I took a sip, finally feeling some energy returning.
Looking at the lunch box, I asked, "Is this my lunch?"
Willow set it on my desk with a smile. "Mr. Parker from Blackwell Empire brought this over. He said Mr. Blackwell specially had your favorite dishes made and told you to eat well."
Warmth flooded my chest.
"By the way, Ms. Green, I saw Miss Ruby come to the company."
My hand paused as I reached for the chopsticks. "Do you know what she came for?"
Willow straightened up. "I saw her carrying a lunch box into Mr. Nathan's office. She was probably bringing him lunch."
I looked puzzled. Ruby had been publicly kicked out of Grant Group. Given her pride, she shouldn't have come back.
But not only did she come, she even brought Nathan lunch, trying to please him. She never did anything without a reason. She must have some agenda.
---
The next day, Willow came in with documents. After I signed them, she said, "Ms. Grant, I have something else to report."
I looked at her. "Ruby made a move?"
Willow nodded. "After work yesterday, Mr. Nathan didn't come back from meeting clients. I saw Ruby go into his office, so I followed her. Through the crack in the door, I saw Ruby secretly opening his safe."
My eyes narrowed slightly. The safe? It would contain either money or confidential documents. Ruby had no reason to steal Nathan's money, so it could only be confidential documents.
A cold gleam flashed in my eyes.
I said to Willow, "Go get Mr. Nathan for me."
Soon, Nathan arrived at my office. He sat down and asked, "Vera, is there something you need?"
I looked at him steadily and called out, "Nathan."
His expression shifted slightly. "Whatever you need, just say it. I'll do my best to help."
But I smiled and said, "Nathan, do you dare make a bet with me?"
---
Nathan came out of my office after more than forty minutes. His face was pale, looking completely lost.
I watched his retreating figure until the door closed, then looked away. I took out my phone and called the private investigator. "How are things on your end?"
He said, "Mrs. Blackwell, rest assured. Everything's under control. Whenever you need, I can deliver her to you."
I smiled slightly. "Good. Wait for my signal."
After hanging up, my face took on a hint of coldness. The cat-and-mouse game had gone on long enough. It was time to kick Ruby out for good!
Before the workday ended, Atlas sent me a message: [A top-tier French restaurant just opened in New York. Want to try it?]
I replied instantly: [Sure!]
[I'll pick you up in a bit.]
Right at quitting time, Atlas arrived.
The cold wind was biting outside. I threw myself into Atlas's arms, wrapping my hands around his waist.
Atlas put his hand on my waist, smiling indulgently. "Hungry? I got your favorite strawberry cake."
I looked up in delight. "Babe, you're the best."
Atlas smiled and took the cake out of the car's mini fridge.
After finishing one bite, I scooped another spoonful and held it to Atlas's lips. "You try some too."
Atlas leaned forward and took the spoon in his mouth.
I looked at him with a smile. "Is it sweet?"
Atlas looked at me with deep eyes, then leaned down and kissed my lips, his eyes full of amusement. "Not as sweet as you."
---
After dinner, when we got home, Willow called me.
"Ms. Grant, Ruby made her move."
My eyebrows lifted slightly, and my lips curved into a cold arc. I didn't expect to close the net so quickly. Ruby really was desperate—I'd barely dangled the bait before she bit.
"Alright, got it. You don't need to worry about what comes next. I'll have someone handle it."
