Chapter 67
Tessa POV
I stared at the phone, her words echoing in my mind. She’d been speaking in riddles, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more…..something I wasn’t seeing and I had no idea about..
I forced myself to push the thought aside. I couldn’t afford to let Helen get under my skin, not when I needed to stay focused. She was trying to scare me, and I know just how to ignore her, she was making empty threats.
Late at night, I collapsed into bed, exhaustion finally catching up with me. But sleep was far from restful, my dreams were dark and twisted, filled with shadowy figures and whispered threats.
My mother’s face appeared in the haze, her expression twisted in pain as she called out to me.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t reach her. She was slipping away, further and further, until she was gone.
I awake in fear, my heart hammering in my chest. Sweat clung to my skin as I gasped for breath, the nightmare still clinging to the edges of my mind. It was just a dream, I told myself.
“Just a dream.”
I stumbled out of bed, my throat dry. I needed water, something to calm my nerves. As I reached for the glass on my nightstand, my phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with an incoming call.
My stomach dropped when I saw the number. It was the hospital.
I froze, dread washing over me in a cold wave. My hand trembled as I picked up the phone, my heart racing with a mix of fear and desperation.
“Hello?” My voice was barely a whisper, the words catching in my throat.
“Miss Tess?” the voice on the other end asked, its tone grave. “I’m calling about your mother. I’m afraid there’s been an emergency…”
The world tilted beneath me as the words sunk in. My breath hitched, and I gripped the phone tighter, the room spinning around me.
“Is she... is she okay?” I managed to choke out, my voice trembling.
The voice hesitated for a moment, and in that brief silence, everything seemed to stop.
“Miss Tess, I think you need to come to the hospital right away. Your mother—”
I didn’t hear the rest. The phone slipped from my grasp, clattering to the floor as the walls closed in around me.
I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. All I could do was replay Helen’s words over and over in my mind.
“Sometimes the ones you love are the easiest to hurt, hope you always remember that Theresa darling.” Those words kept echoing in my head as I slide into my slippers and ran out of the house.
My mom stays far from where I am, I didn't care…I had no cash, neither was I with my phone as I stopped a cab and asked him to drive me out of town and without much questions asked, he stepped on the pad and the car went as fast as possible.
“Tessa, what is wrong?” Jane asked as soon as I opened the door and slammed it so hard and loud. I didn't respond, neither did I say anything to her, I just rushed out.
“What's going on?” Ana also came out, rubbing her eyes as she looked confused and stared at Jane who put her hand in a “I don't know.” type of way.
My heart kept hammering as the words of the hospital echoed once again in my head, I was fighting back my tears so hard, my mind was racing and I had no idea what to do at that point.
It was in the middle of the night and my mom was in a life and death situation, what do I do? How didn't I stop this from happening? This was all my fault, I caused her this pain, if I hadn't pushed Helen further, this..my mom wont have had to pay for this.. ‘God, please save me mom, I am begging you.’ Those were the only words that kept coming to my head as i clenched my hands together.
