Let’s Go
Emily stood as well, nodding. Together, they exited the office, their heels clicking against the polished marble floor. The corridors were lined with tasteful artwork and soft lighting, each detail meticulously curated to reflect the hotel’s luxury.
As they approached the suite, the air seemed to thrum with anticipation. Emily knocked on the door, her movements practiced and precise.
A man in his mid-fifties opened the door, his tailored suit suggesting both wealth and influence. Behind him, several other dignitaries were seated in the spacious living area of the suite, their conversations pausing as they turned to see who had arrived.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Sophia began, stepping forward with a poised smile. Her voice carried just enough warmth to be welcoming but remained professional. "I’m Sophia Cooke, the Managing Director of Aurora Haven Hotels and Suites. It’s an honor to have you with us today."
The man at the door extended his hand, a smile breaking across his face. "Ms. Cooke, it’s a pleasure. I’m Richard Benson. We’ve heard a lot about your leadership. This place is exceptional."
Sophia shook his hand firmly, her gaze steady. "Thank you, Mr. Benson. We strive to exceed expectations. If there’s anything you or your colleagues need, please don’t hesitate to let me know."
The dignitaries murmured their approval, some rising to shake her hand, others simply nodding. The room buzzed with quiet respect, the kind reserved for someone who had earned her place at the table.
As the introductions continued, Sophia’s sharp eyes didn’t miss a single detail. The way Richard’s assistant glanced nervously at his watch, the faint tension in the shoulders of the man seated by the window— every piece of information was cataloged and stored away for later.
When the formalities were over, Sophia and Emily stepped out into the hallway. "Everything seems to be going smoothly," Emily said, her tone relieved.
"Of course," Sophia replied, her lips curving into a small smile. "But let's hope it stays that way."
\--------------------
Sophia’s heels clicked against the polished marble floors of the hallway, the sound crisp in the otherwise tranquil corridor of Aurora Haven Hotels and Suites. The grandeur of the place was unmistakable — the gold accents on the high ceilings reflected the morning sunlight streaming in from expansive windows, while soft instrumental music floated through the air, creating a serene atmosphere.
Sophia adjusted her blazer, the tailored suit hugging her form perfectly. Beside her, Emily walked in measured steps, tablet in hand, her demeanor poised but attentive as always. The faint scent of fresh lilies wafted from the floral arrangements lining the hallway, adding to the opulence.
They were halfway down the corridor when a voice suddenly broke through the calm.
“Sophia!”
The sound of her name, loud and startling, echoed against the walls. Sophia froze mid-step, her heart skipping a beat. Nobody had called her just “Sophia” in years. Not her staff, who addressed her as Ms. Cooke, nor her colleagues, who defaulted to her title of Managing Director.
Turning slowly, she scanned the hallway for the source of the call. Her eyes landed on a man, jogging toward her and Emily from the opposite direction. He was tall, his tailored blue suit fitting him impeccably, exuding the kind of confidence that made heads turn. His stride was purposeful, each step firm, his gaze locked on her.
Sophia’s pulse quickened. Who on earth could this be? she wondered, racking her brain as he drew closer. Emily leaned slightly toward her and whispered, “Do you know him?”
“I... I don’t think so,” Sophia murmured, her brows furrowing.
The man slowed as he reached them, his face breaking into a wide smile. “Sophia,” he said again, his tone lighter now, almost teasing. “It’s been a while.”
Sophia tilted her head slightly, still unsure. His smile grew wider as if he could sense her confusion.
“Do I know you?” she asked cautiously, taking a small step back. Her voice was measured, guarded — a reflex born from years of dealing with strangers who always seemed to want something from her.
“It’s me,” the man said, gesturing to himself in a way that seemed both familiar and dramatic.
Sophia raised an eyebrow. “You who?”
“Ron,” he said, almost laughing now, “Ron Bill! From Ivory Hall... Mary’s friend. Remember?”
The mention of Ivory Hall — her college alma mater — made her pause. Her gaze sharpened as she tried to pull memories from years ago. “Ron Bill...” she repeated softly, searching her mind.
Then it clicked. “Ron!” she exclaimed, her face lighting up in recognition. “Oh my goodness, Ron!”
He chuckled, nodding. “Yes! That’s me.”
“You look... so different,” Sophia said, gesturing vaguely to his face. “Must be the beards. You didn’t have one back then.”
Ron stroked his neatly trimmed beard, grinning. “Ah, the beard. Does it suit me?”
“It’s definitely an upgrade,” she teased, her tone warming now that the initial tension had faded.
“Phew,” Ron said, pretending to wipe his brow. “I was worried there for a second.”
Emily, who had been quietly observing the exchange, cleared her throat softly. “So... you two know each other?” she asked, her curiosity barely masked.
“From college,” Sophia explained, glancing at her assistant. “He was... what, Mary’s friend?”
“Something more like an ex,” Ron corrected, though there was a playful glint in his eyes.
“Right,” Sophia said with a nod, her memory piecing itself together. “Mary... my roommate. Wow, Ron, it’s been what, a decade?”
“Something like that,” Ron replied. “And look at you now. Managing this incredible place. I always knew you’d do great things.”
Sophia smiled, a genuine one that reached her eyes. “And you? What are you doing here?”
“I’m here with the Innovation Committee,” Ron explained. “We’re hosting our biannual conference here. Big decisions to be made about the future of technology and all that.”
Sophia’s eyebrows shot up. “Wait, you’re part of that committee? The one with the world’s most influential innovators and business leaders?”
Ron shrugged modestly. “I wouldn’t say world’s most influential, but yes, I’m part of it.”
“Wow,” Sophia said, genuinely impressed. “That’s... incredible. You’ve done well for yourself, Ron.”
He tilted his head slightly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Coming from you, that means a lot. But honestly, Sophia, look at you. Managing one the finest branch of Aurora Haven Hotel and Suite here in LA.”
“I actually manage all the eighteen branches we have in the state,” she said, a hint of pride in her voice.
“Eighteen?” Ron let out a low whistle. “Now that’s impressive.”
Emily, still holding her tablet, shifted slightly, her gaze darting between the two. “If I may,” she interjected, “Ms. Cooke, we should...”
“Right,” Sophia said quickly, remembering herself. “I've things to attend to. But Ron, it’s really good to see you.”
“You too,” he said. “But before you go, let’s exchange numbers. I’d love to catch up properly.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, holding it out to her. Sophia hesitated for a brief moment before taking it and punching in her number. She handed it back, their fingers brushing briefly.
“I’ll call you,” Ron said with a smile.
“Looking forward to it,” Sophia replied.
Ron stepped back, giving a slight bow, his movements fluid and respectful. “Have a great day, Sophia.”
“You too,” she said, watching as he turned and walked away, his confident strides carrying him down the hall.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Emily leaned in. “So... who was that, really?”
Sophia chuckled softly. “Just someone from a long time ago.”
Emily raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. “Shall we?”
“Let’s go,” Sophia said, the momentary detour leaving her with a faint smile as they continued down the hallway.
