Chapter 158 Blessings in Disguise

Chapter 158 Blessings in Disguise
Mia: POV

"Mom!" I cried out, my voice breaking. "It's not cancer! You're going to be okay!"

I spun around, nearly throwing myself at her. The papers scattered between us like confetti as I wrapped my arms around her thin frame. Her body shook against mine, her tears dampening my shoulder as I soaked hers.

"What?" she whispered, disbelief in her voice. "Are you sure?"

"Yes," I sobbed, laughing through my tears. "Yes, it says right here—it's treatable, Mom. You're going to be okay."

Camellia rushed over, picking up one of the fallen pages, her eyes widening as she read. She joined our embrace, wrapping her arms around us both.

"Oh my God," she kept repeating, her voice thick with emotion.

Richard was next, placing a steady hand on my mother's shoulder, his usually composed face breaking into a relieved smile.

Through my tears, I caught sight of Nathan standing slightly apart, his eyes glistening with unshed tears, a beautiful smile on his face. When our eyes met, he said softly, "I told you to have hope."

In that moment, I remembered his words from last night in the darkness of our hotel room: "I always believe." His faith had given me strength when I couldn't find my own.

Dr. Ramirez just hung back and let us get it all out, that professional mask of his melting into a real, warm smile. Once we'd pulled ourselves together enough to actually hear what he was saying, he started breaking it down for us.

"Mrs. Lawrence has a rare but completely treatable autoimmune pancreatitis," he said, his voice clear and confident. "The symptoms can closely mimic pancreatic cancer, which led to the initial misdiagnosis."

He continued with medical terminology—immunoglobulin levels, inflammatory markers, steroid responses—but honestly, I only caught about half of it. The only thing that mattered was that Mom would be okay.

"This condition is entirely manageable," Dr. Ramirez continued. "We'll start you on hormone therapy and immunosuppressants. The prognosis is excellent, with most patients returning to normal life after treatment."

"Does this mean we have to stay in Boston for treatment?" I asked urgently, already calculating logistics in my head.

Dr. Ramirez smiled and shook his head. "Not at all. I can recommend several excellent specialists in Los Angeles. This treatment can be administered at any major hospital. I'll send them your detailed treatment plan and medical records."

Mom touched the silver "lucky" necklace, smiling softly. "It seems this really did bring good luck. It's wonderful that I can be treated back home."

The image of me clutching that necklace last night, praying over and over, flashed through my mind. It felt like the universe had actually answered my deepest wish.

Dr. Ramirez detailed the treatment plan, writing everything down carefully. "Although you can begin treatment soon, your mental state significantly impacts your immune system. I'd suggest finding somewhere relaxing in Los Angeles to celebrate this good news before starting treatment."

---

When we left the hospital, the February Boston air was bitterly cold, but I couldn't feel it. The joy warming me from within made everything else seem distant and unimportant.

"We should celebrate properly," Nathan said, his hand resting lightly on my shoulder. The warmth of his touch felt like safety—like the support he'd been giving me throughout these terrifying days.

"Perhaps a spa?" Richard suggested. "Best way to relax body and mind."

"I already packed my swimsuit, just waiting for this moment," Camellia said with a wink. I realized then that she had maintained hope all along.

Mom looked better already, her posture straighter, her smile more genuine than I'd seen in weeks. "That sounds wonderful. It's been so long since I've properly relaxed."

Nathan immediately made calls, arranging everything with his usual efficiency. He mentioned Glen Ivy Hot Springs near Los Angeles and arranged for the private jet to take us back that evening.

---

Watching the landscape change from Boston's snow-covered buildings to California's sunshine through the jet's window felt like shedding a heavy coat. The weight that had been crushing my chest for days was finally lifting.

I leaned against Nathan's shoulder, whispering, "Thank you. For everything."

He kissed my forehead and said, "This is just the beginning."

We landed in Los Angeles and drove directly to Glen Ivy in Corona. February in Southern California was gloriously mild compared to freezing Boston. The palm trees cast dancing shadows in the sunshine, and for the first time in days, the world seemed beautiful again.

Nathan handled everything at the front desk with practiced ease, ensuring Mom would have the most comfortable experience possible. Watching him take care of everything, I felt a sense of security I'd never known before.

"We have nineteen different mineral pools," the receptionist explained enthusiastically. "Don't miss our signature 'Club Mud' experience for your skin, and we offer various spa services as well."

We checked in and headed to the changing rooms. I chose a blue bikini, suddenly realizing this would be the first time Nathan would see me in so little clothing since we'd become a couple. The thought sent a flutter of nervous excitement through my stomach.

---

The attendant assigned us two adjacent mineral pools—one for Camellia and Richard, and another for Nathan and me—while setting Mom up in a separate, more secluded pool further away from ours. Because Mom, wanting a quiet moment to herself after everything, requested a more secluded pool.

The thought of sharing a hot spring with Nathan sent my heart into overdrive, a wild mix of excitement and nerves coursing through me.

Mom, wanting a quiet moment to herself after everything, requested a more secluded pool.

I watched Mom walk toward her pool, her steps lighter than they had been for days. The immense relief and gratitude I felt was almost overwhelming.

"There's an attendant who will bring her drinks and light food," Nathan assured me, noticing my watchful gaze. "She'll be well taken care of."

Camellia and Richard had already headed to their pool, eager for some private time. I lingered in the changing area, taking deep breaths to calm my nerves.

When I finally emerged, Nathan was already in our pool, steam rising around his bare upper body. When he turned and saw me, his eyes traveled slowly from my face downward, appreciation and desire evident in his gaze.

I immediately felt shy, my hands instinctively moving to cover myself.

"Don't look at me like that," I said softly, feeling my cheeks flush.

The way he looked at me made me want to both run away and move closer, and the contradiction only made me blush harder.
