Chapter 163 #163
Chapter 163
~Third Person POV~
The gunshot cracked through the stormy night air like thunder.
In that split second, time slowed down to an agonizing crawl. Shailyn didn't think about the danger. She didn't think about her own safety. All she saw was Devian aiming his weapon directly at Dwayne’s chest.
Driven by pure instinct, Shailyn threw herself forward, putting her body right between the gun and her husband.
BANG!
The heavy bullet struck Shailyn in her side. The force of the impact lifted her off her feet, sending her crashing onto the wet wooden dock.
"SHAI!" Dwayne’s voice echoed across the harbor in a gut-wrenching scream.
Devian stood over them, his burned face twisted into a maniacal grin as he re-aimed his weapon down at Dwayne. "Die together, then!"
BANG! BANG!
Two rapid shots rang out from the darkness. Detective Miller emerged from behind a row of industrial crates, his tactical rifle smoking. Both rounds struck Devian squarely in the chest.
Devian’s eyes went wide with shock. He staggered backward over the edge of the pier, splashing silently into the dark, churning harbor waters below, swallowed whole by the ocean currents.
Dwayne dropped to his knees on the slick dock, pulling Shailyn into his arms. Blood was pooling fast around her coat.
"Shai... Shai, look at me! Keep your eyes on me!" Dwayne sobbed frantically, pressing both hands against her wound to stop the bleeding. Pain tore through his own broken ribs, but he felt nothing except pure terror for his wife.
Shailyn’s face was deathly pale in the rain. Her hand weakly reached up, clutching Dwayne’s jacket. Her lips moved, but only a faint whisper came out: "The... the baby..."
"Medics! I need a medic right now!" Dwayne roared into the night.
~Shailyn's POV~
The fluorescent lights of the hospital ceiling flickered past in blurry streaks. Sirens were wailing. Voices were shouting orders above me.
"BP is dropping!"
"Prepare the operating room!"
Dwayne was running beside my gurney, holding my hand so tightly my knuckles were white. Blood was smeared across his face and clothes, his eyes wild with tears.
"I'm right here, Shai," he kept repeating, his voice cracking. "Don't you dare close your eyes. Stay with me. Please, baby, stay with me."
"Dwayne..." I managed to choke out before a mask was pressed over my face. The world spun out of focus, and everything dissolved into heavy blackness.
When I finally woke up, the harsh white lights had been replaced by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. The room was deathly quiet, except for the rhythmic beep of a heart monitor.
I blinked slowly, my whole body feeling heavy and numb.
Dwayne was sitting in a chair pressed right against the mattress. His head was resting on the edge of my bed, his hair damp, his bandaged hands clutching mine like a lifeline. He looked completely shattered.
I tried to shift, but a deep, aching pain washed through my lower abdomen.
And then, a terrifying empty feeling hit me.
My heart seized. My breathing hitched into frantic gasps. "Dwayne..."
Dwayne lifted his head immediately. His eyes were red-rimmed and swollen.
"Shai," he whispered, standing up and leaning over me gently. "You're awake. Thank God... thank God."
"Dwayne," I begged, tears already filling my eyes as I looked down at my stomach. "The baby... Dwayne, where is our baby?"
Dwayne swallowed hard, a fresh wave of tears spilling down his cheeks. He couldn't speak. He just shook his head slowly, his jaw trembling.
"No..." I sobbed, the sound tearing out from the deepest part of my throat. "No, no, no! Please, Dwayne, tell me no!"
Dwayne climbed onto the edge of the bed, wrapping his arms around me with absolute tenderness, pulling my head against his chest.
"The doctors tried everything, Shai," Dwayne sobbed silently into my hair, his chest heaving. "The trauma... the blood loss... they saved your life, but they couldn't save our little one. I'm so sorry, Shai. I'm so, so sorry."
A pain far worse than any bullet tore through my heart. I buried my face in Dwayne's neck, crying until I couldn't breathe, giving in to the overwhelming grief.
We stayed like that for hours in the dark room, holding each other, drowning in the loss of the future we had envisioned.
Three weeks later.
The Belmar estate was quiet. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and violet.
I stood near the edge of the garden, wrapping a warm cardigan around my shoulders. The physical scars were healing, but the ache in my heart remained a heavy, quiet presence.
Footsteps crunched softly on the stone pathway behind me. Dwayne walked up, holding two warm cups of tea. He set the cups down on a small stone table and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.
"How are you feeling tonight?" he asked softly.
"Better," I murmured, resting my head back against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "Still sad. But... better."
"It's okay to be sad," Dwayne whispered, kissing my cheek. "We lost a piece of our future. We're allowed to grieve."
"I kept thinking about why," I said quietly, looking out at the blooming Lucys. "Why we had to pay such a steep price just to have peace."
Dwayne turned me around gently so I was facing him. He took my hands, his eyes soft and filled with endless love.
"Devian and Tyler are gone, Shai. The syndicate is dismantled. The company is safe. But most importantly... you are here with me," Dwayne said firmly. "You saved my life on that dock. If I had lost you, I wouldn't have survived it."
"We survived it together," I said, wiping a stray tear from my cheek.
"We did," Dwayne agreed, smiling faintly.
From across the lawn, the sound of tiny giggles broke through the quiet evening air.
Hannah and Luke were walking down the porch steps, leading Lily and Lucy toward us. Lily was wobbling on her feet, holding a stuffed duck, while Lucy toddled right behind her, babbling happily.
"Mama! Dada!" Lily called out, waving her tiny hand.
A soft, genuine warmth filled my chest as I watched our daughters run toward us.
We had suffered a devastating loss, and the scar would remain with us forever. But as Dwayne wrapped one arm around my shoulder and scooped Lily into his other arm, I knew we were going to be okay.
We had fought through the absolute darkest shadows imaginable, and we had finally reached the light. Our family was safe, our home was quiet, and together, we were whole.
