♥ Chapter 146 ♥
POV: Lisa Morrison-Russo
07:15 AM • Master Bedroom • Russo Family Estate • Milan • Italy
The morning sickness hits me like a sledgehammer before I'm fully awake, sending me scrambling to the bathroom where I grip the marble sink and wonder how I'm supposed to manage a third pregnancy while coordinating the most complex family crisis in our history. At six weeks along, my body is already making demands I can't afford to accommodate when everyone needs me functioning at full capacity.
"Lisa? Tesoro, are you alright?" James appears in the doorway, his hair disheveled from sleep but his eyes already alert with concern.
"Perfect. Just growing our third child while managing Angelo's wedding security, Antonio's EU background checks, and Dante's media exposure." I rinse my mouth and attempt a smile that probably looks as weak as I feel. "The usual pregnancy glamour."
"Maybe you should delegate more responsibilities. Let Papa Dominic and Uncle Maximus handle the crisis coordination while you focus on taking care of yourself."
"They're sixty-four years old, James. This generation's challenges require this generation's solutions." I accept his steadying hand as we return to the bedroom. "Besides, someone needs to maintain strategic oversight while everyone else manages their individual situations."
Seven-year-old Elena Rose appears in our doorway, her school uniform perfectly arranged but her expression worried. "Mama, are you sick again? Like when baby Luca was in your tummy?"
My heart squeezes at her perceptive concern. Elena Rose has grown increasingly aware of family complexities that most children her age never encounter.
"Just morning sickness, principessa. Nothing serious."
"Is that why everyone's been having so many grown-up meetings? Because the new baby needs extra protection like Luca did?"
James and I exchange glances over her head. Our daughter absorbs everything around her with frightening accuracy.
"The baby will be perfectly safe," I assure her. "Our family is very good at protecting everyone we love."
"Even when there are bad people who don't want us to be happy?"
Her innocent question reveals how much she understands about our current security concerns.

Despite the nausea that makes concentration difficult, I review the coordination timeline that could determine whether our family emerges from this crisis stronger or more vulnerable than ever. Angelo's wedding planning, Antonio's EU position, Dante's artistic exhibition, Nico's Olympic selection, James's UN appointment, and Orion's MIT decision all require synchronized disclosure strategies.
Four-year-old Luca plays contentedly in his portable crib nearby, occasionally babbling in the mixture of Italian and English that characterizes his early language development. His innocent presence reminds me that we're not just managing current crises but creating the foundation for his childhood security.
My phone buzzes with a call from Dr. Martinelli. "Lisa, I've scheduled your first prenatal appointment for next week, but I'm concerned about stress levels affecting early pregnancy development."
"My stress levels are manageable, Doctor."
"Are they? Because coordinating family business operations while managing morning sickness and caring for two young children creates physical demands that could compromise both maternal and fetal health."
After ending the call, I stare at the family coordination charts that cover my desk. Each family member's individual success depends on strategic support from everyone else, but pregnancy fatigue makes the logistics feel overwhelming.
Papa Dominic enters with Uncle Maximus, both carrying expressions that suggest another complication requiring immediate attention.
"Lisa, we need to discuss the press interest in Angelo's engagement announcement," Papa Dominic says, settling into the chair across from my desk. "Several Italian society magazines want features on successful family business dynasties and their next generation achievements."
"Timeline?"
"They're requesting interviews and photo shoots within two weeks. Refusing might create more curiosity than participating with careful preparation."
The intersection of family celebration with ongoing security concerns creates another layer of complexity requiring strategic management.
"What's Giuseppe's assessment?"
"Controlled media engagement could demonstrate our complete legitimacy more effectively than continued privacy. But family photo shoots and lifestyle features would expose personal information we've never shared publicly."
Luca starts fussing, his internal schedule demanding attention regardless of adult crisis management requirements. I lift him from his crib, settling him against my chest where his familiar weight provides comfort amid the surrounding chaos.
"Sometimes I wonder if we're making this more complicated than necessary," I admit, swaying gently to soothe Luca while processing strategic decisions. "Maybe complete transparency really is simpler than ongoing crisis management."
"And if complete transparency exposes vulnerabilities we've spent decades protecting?" Uncle Maximus asks.
"Then we trust that forty years of genuine transformation has prepared us to handle whatever consequences honesty creates."
14:45 PM • Garden Terrace • Russo Estate • Milan • Italy
Elena Rose joins me for lunch on the terrace, chattering about school friends while I pick at soup and try to keep food down. Her presence provides both comfort and additional pressure as I contemplate raising three children within our increasingly complex circumstances.
"Mama, why do you look worried all the time lately?"
"Not worried exactly. More like... thinking carefully about important family decisions."
"Like when I have to choose between sharing toys or keeping them to myself?"
"Exactly like that, but grown-up decisions affect more people."
She considers this seriously while arranging her pasta in precise patterns. "Will the new baby be safe like me and Luca?"
"Very safe, principessa. Our whole family works together to keep everyone protected."
"Good. I want to be the best big sister to both babies."
My phone rings. Angelo from Oxford.
"Lisa, I need to discuss timing coordination. Emma's father is accelerating his background research, and Marcus Pemberton is threatening to contact Professor Whitfield directly with his evidence."
"Your response strategy?"
"Complete honesty with Emma about our transformation, combined with legal action against Marcus if necessary. But Lisa, if I'm forced to reveal family history publicly, it affects everyone else's career opportunities."
"Then we coordinate revelation across all situations simultaneously. Control the narrative instead of letting others dictate disclosure timing."
After hanging up, I study Elena Rose's innocent face and realize we're not just protecting current family members. We're creating the foundation for the next generation's security, happiness, and normal childhood development.
"Mama, will everything be okay?" Elena Rose asks with seven-year-old directness.
"Everything will be exactly as it should be, sweetheart. Our family always finds ways to take care of each other."
But tomorrow, we have to choose between the safety of continued secrecy and the freedom that might come from trusting the world with our truth.
My hand rests on my still-flat stomach where our third child grows, unaware that their arrival coincides with the most critical decision our family has ever made.
