♥ Chapter 141 ♥
POV: Angelo Russo
10:30 AM • Wedding Planner's Office • Central Milan • Italy
The bridal magazines spread across Signora Benedetti's polished desk feel like evidence in a case I'm not sure I want to prosecute. Emma sits beside me, her engagement ring catching the morning light as she flips through pages of elaborate ceremonies that require guest lists, venue selections, and security arrangements we can't afford to manage carelessly.
"The Villa San Martino would be perfect for a September wedding," Signora Benedetti gushes, showing us photographs of a stunning lakeside estate. "Very romantic, very exclusive. Though I should mention, their security requirements are quite minimal. Most couples prefer the intimacy of limited protection."
Emma glances at me with that expression I've learned to recognize. Another moment where our different backgrounds create friction she's still processing.
"Actually, we'll need comprehensive security arrangements," I say carefully. "My family values privacy and safety."
"Of course! Many successful families prefer discrete protection. I work frequently with prominent Italian business leaders who require similar considerations."
After we leave the appointment with preliminary plans that feel both exciting and terrifying, Emma links her arm through mine as we walk through Milan's bustling streets.
"Angelo, I need to ask you something, and I want you to be completely honest."
My stomach clenches. "What is it?"
"Your family's security requirements, the careful way everyone speaks about business operations, the obvious wealth that doesn't quite match the public profile of an import company..." She stops walking and turns to face me directly. "Are we planning a wedding or a witness protection ceremony?"
Her directness cuts through weeks of careful deflection. "Emma, what did your father tell you about his research?"
"Enough to understand that your family's background includes chapters you haven't shared with me. Historical connections to organizations that operated outside conventional business practices."
The euphemistic language tells me Professor Whitfield has been diplomatic in his revelations, but thorough enough to give Emma context for understanding our family's complexity.
"And how do you feel about that?"
"Confused. Concerned. But also..." She pauses, choosing words carefully. "Also impressed by what I've observed during my time with your family. The love, the loyalty, the genuine care everyone shows for each other. Whatever your background includes, the people I've gotten to know are good people."
Relief floods through me, followed immediately by renewed anxiety about wedding planning complications.
14:20 PM • Russo Family Estate • Milan • Italy
Back home, we find the family in controlled chaos as Elena Rose attempts to help Mama plan the engagement party while baby Luca naps peacefully despite the surrounding activity. The domestic scene feels normal until Giuseppe approaches with security briefing documents that remind me our celebrations require military-level coordination.
"Angelo, we need to discuss guest list verification procedures," Giuseppe says quietly. "Emma's family and academic colleagues will require background screening before receiving invitations."
Emma overhears this exchange, her eyebrows rising. "Background screening for wedding guests?"
"Standard security protocol," I explain, though the explanation sounds inadequate even to me. "When you grow up with protection requirements, they become routine rather than paranoid."
"But why do you need protection? Your family runs import operations, not government agencies or high-risk international businesses."
The question hangs in the air like a challenge I can't avoid indefinitely.
"Emma, can we talk privately?"
We walk to the garden terrace where this conversation should have happened weeks ago. The late afternoon light makes everything look golden and peaceful, a deceptive backdrop for revelations that could change everything between us.
"My family's business operations have evolved significantly over the past decade," I begin carefully. "But our background includes historical involvement in traditional Sicilian business practices that required... discretion and protection."
"Traditional Sicilian business practices?"
"Methods that weren't always entirely legal by contemporary standards, but were considered normal business approaches in certain communities and time periods."
Emma sits down heavily in one of the terrace chairs. "Angelo, are you telling me your family has connections to organized crime?"
"I'm telling you my family has a complicated past that we've worked very hard to evolve beyond. Complete legitimacy, ethical business operations, positive community contributions. But understanding our present requires acknowledging our history."
"And the security measures?"
"Some enemies and competitors haven't accepted our transformation. They prefer us vulnerable or illegal rather than successful and legitimate."
She stares at me for a long moment, processing information that challenges everything she thought she knew about the man she agreed to marry.
"Is there anything else I need to know?"
"Nothing that affects who we are now or who we're becoming. But Emma, marrying me means joining a family that operates with complexities most people never encounter."
"Such as?"
"Such as wedding guests who require security screening. Venue selections based on protection capabilities rather than just aesthetic preferences. Future children who grow up understanding privacy and loyalty in ways other families don't require."
My phone buzzes with a text from Marcus Pemberton: "Saw the engagement announcement in the Oxford newsletter. Congratulations. Looking forward to celebrating with your lovely bride's family very soon."
The message sends ice through my veins. Marcus hasn't given up his blackmail attempts, and now he's threatening Emma's family directly.
"Angelo? You look pale."
"Just wedding stress. Nothing serious."
But as Emma studies my face with those intelligent eyes that miss nothing, I realize that our engagement has made her a target for everyone who wants leverage against my family.
Our wedding planning isn't just about celebration and future happiness. It's about protecting the woman I love from dangers she never chose but will have to navigate as long as she's connected to me.
